FIND OUT MORE ABOUT YOUR TEACHER

NAME KlausORIGIN GermanyWITH IH 1st year

my name is Klaus Weichel and I am originally from the state of Hesse in the southern part of

Germany. I’ve worked for IH Kyiv for the last 5 months and it’s the first time I have been in Ukraine. Last year I taught English in Turkey and was employed as an English Language Administrator in Israel. Before I started teaching I worked as a Meteorological Assistant for the German Civilian Weather service and I also served 4.5 years in the German Armed Forces as a Sergeant in the Signal Corps (Communications). From 1998 until January this year I worked as a Technical Support Analyst for various Blue-Chip companies in Ireland, Germany and the UK.

Since my arrival in Kiev at the end of January this year I haven’t had a real chance to see more of Ukraine; as much as I would like to. I stayed in Lviv while visiting a friend In Poland and I have also been to the area of Korsun, Cherkassy and Kanev – with some Ukrainian friends who are also interested in history. My favourite place to hang out is “The Drum” (Baraban). This cosy little hard-to-find place just off Khreshatyk (Prorizna 4 - hint: in the backyard), is very popular among expats. Furthermore, it’s a good place to feel the pulse of the city and Ukraine, because it’s also a regular meeting place of journalists and newspaper editors.

What I miss is the typical English/Irish pub atmosphere and the availability of a nice pint of Guinness; though one can go to O’Briaens Irish pub or the Sunduk and get it there – it’s not the same though. My main interests are closely connected with history and travelling. One of the reasons I wanted to teach English and German abroad was to experience different countries and to get to know the people while travelling. During the last few years I have been in the USA, Canada, most parts of Western Europe, Turkey and Israel.

One of my favourite movies is a low-budget movie called “Withnail and I” directed by Bruce Robinson. One of my favourite quotes from this movie is: “…we’re indeed drifting into the arena of the unwell.” A must see!

This is a 2 week programme for 9 to 17 year olds. It has been designed working with the following organisations: Salisbury City Football Club A Premiership Football ClubCourse outline:Football training - Salisbury City FCThis two-week English course is combined with a comprehensive football training programme at Salisbury FC grounds. It includes 9 afternoons of football training and a visit to a London Premiership club stadium. Two courses are offered:29 July-11 August (9-17 years)12-25 August (13-17 years)Students arrive on the Sunday before classes start and leave on the Saturday after they finish. The programme includes 9 two-hour training sessions with qualified football coaches – 7 sessions with the Salisbury City FC coach, and 2 with a coach from a London Premiership football club. These coaches have a great depth of experience in training and managing students.A member of the IH Salisbury staff accompanies the students on all training sessions and visits. Students are collected from their English course and returned at the end of the afternoon activity each day.In addition to the training programme, all students attending the course will have a unique opportunity to visit a London Premiership club stadium. Where available, they will also have the opportunity to attend a football match (optional, extra charge applies).Students are integrated in international classes at the appropriate level. The course consists of four lessons of 45 minutes each morning, Mondays to Fridays. The programme is limited to a maximum of 50 students. This is an outstanding oppoprtunity for young football fans!!!

UKRAINE

The Cabo da Roca is as far west as Europe gets, not including Britain and Ireland, but actually it is on the same longitude as Western Ireland. It was a great feeling to think that in a year I’d travelled both east to Moscow and west to Cabo da Roca and appreciated the width of our continent. When you get there there is a lighthouse and a big stone monument and the waves crash against a small cliff.Estadio de Luz - ‘stadium of light’I managed to get myself a ticket to the famous stadium of Benfica for the big match against their big rivals Sporting Lisbon. However, if this was the equivalent of Dynamo-Shakhtar it felt rather less threatening. I saw many guys wearing Benfica shirts whilst their girlfriends wore Sporting shirts and scarves, even in the Benfica section. I couldn’t imagine this happening in England! The stadium was rebuilt for Euro 2004 and is truly spectacular (I hope we will have a similar facility in Kiev for Euro 2012). The match

ended 1-1, but the best part of any Benfica game is before kick-off when I live eagle circles the stadium several times before landing on a podium to complete the club’s famous emblem. Of course when I was there it landed on the grass!Porto I took a train up to Porto in the north, which occupies a spectacular setting in a river

AVELLING WITH IH KYIV

Baixa - the old town The centre of old Lisbon is a group of tightly-packed winding narrow streets built on several hills. Driving through the cobbled roads past tiled Mediterranean houses gives one the feeling of being inside a Renault Clio advert! However, the best way to see the old town is by catching one of the city’s characteristic old trams or one of the funiculars. The old town mostly dates from the late 16th and 17th centuries as the city was flattened by a devastating earthquake in 1755. Locals still speculate about if, or perhaps when such an earthquake might strike again. Hopefully not any time soon.Fado music Fado is a traditional style of solo singing in Portugal. There are many professional places to hear Fado but my friend Carla knew better and insisted we go to hear ‘the real thing’. I was taken to a small cafe in the old town where various locals come out of the woodwork and perform, varying in quality from almost professional down to fairly ropey. The songs are often melancholic. I asked Carla if this means that Portuguese people are pessimistic. “No”, she said, “but if we are sad about something we say so”. During the evening we were brought wine, olives and flaming chorico sausages and the atmosphere was cozy and convivial. Bizarrely the Portuguese waiter could speak Russian and told me he had been to Kiev more than 30 times! Something about a girl, maybe? Food Carla is from Madeira and so insisted that we go to a real Madeiran restaurant and I decided to rely on her to choose the dishes. After a first course of fresh mussels the waiter brought out some pieces of meat on a spit and I realised- ‘this is shashlik!’ But anyway I can say that Madeiran ‘shashlik’ is delicious-almost as good as Ukrainian!Cabo da Roca - the westernmost point in continental Europe

gorge. The food there was excellent and the city has a dynamic feel about it. It is also close to the Spanish border so I crossed into Spain for a day. Of course they were on their siesta so everything was closed, unlike in Portugal where they settle just for a long lunch break.
