FIND OUT MORE ABOUT YOUR TEACHER

NAME JaneORIGIN AustraliaWITH IH 1st year

Umm, am I allowed to talk about the weather? This winter is great! I had such a fear of Ukrainian winter, but this feels just like an Australian one, maybe even warmer, niiiiiice!Allow me to introduce myself: My name is Jane and I started at IH Kyiv in September. Before moving to Kyiv, I taught for a small language school in Prague for about 4 years. For the last two of those years I was teaching a kind of general English mixed with English for Journalists course at Radio Free Europe/ Radio Liberty. After class I always grabbed students from the Ukrainian Service and bombarded them with questions about Kyiv- now finally this mental image has become a real life situation. Some of you may have seen me around IH with a small dog (a chihuahua to be exact) . His name is Johnny and he is originally from Prague, so understands Czech better than English, Russian or Ukrainian. He has already managed to make friends with quite a few street dogs despite the language barrier. Before Prague I lived for a few years in Amsterdam, working in a pub, looking after children, and occasionally writing some articles as a freelancer. Apart from CELTA, my education is in Anthropology. I studied at the University of Melbourne, Australia, as well as doing six months on exchange at University of Manchester, UK (which was actually the most interesting six months of the degree).I have travelled a fair bit around Europe and South East Asia, and actually began teaching as a volunteer at a refugee camp on the Thai-Burmese border. It was a pretty informal environment, the school was like a big bamboo hall with rooms divided by half walls, so you could see what everyone was doing if you wanted to. Sometimes there were surprise visitors in the classroom; like somebody’s baby sister or maybe a goat walked in. That goat always got a laugh. I like cooking, reading, going to galleries, the cinema and crochet, so perhaps my hobbies are a little bit pensioner-style, ha ha. Mind you, I just got cable internet at home and have gone crazy about downloading music, so maybe that is not the number one pensioner hobby. I have become a bit lazy in writing articles these days, but am currently busy proofreading the autobiography of the poet Yovshan Annagurban from Turkmenistan (very interesting stuff…..). Oh, and I am also studying Ukrainian language! If you see me around the building, say hello- I don’t know everyone yet! And don’t be afraid of the dog, he doesn’t bite. However, if you offer him some food watch your fingers, he can be a little bit too enthusiastic :0).

The Language BarrierEnglish, as you may already have noticed, is not an easy language. Something that’s close to what you might want to say could mean something completely different. Here are some actual things written by foreigners who are a

little rusty on their English.

1. A sign in a laundry in Rome: “Ladies, leave your clothes here and spend the afternoon having a good time”.2. A sign in Calcutta, India: “Do not spit here and there”.3. A sign outside a Roman doctor’s office: “Specialist in women and other diseases”.4. A sign in a Bucharest hotel lobby: “The lift is being fixed for the next day. During that time we regret that you will be unbearable”.5. A sign in a Norwegian cocktail lounge: “Ladies are requested not to have children in the bar”.6. A sign in a Budapest zoo: “Please do not feed the animals. If you have any suitable food, give it to the guard on duty”.7. A sign in a Copenhagen airline ticket office: “We take your bags and send them in all directions”.8. A sign in a Russian monastery: “ You are welcome to visit the cemetry where famous Russian and Soviet composers, artists and writers are buried daily except Thursday”.

From September 2006 The Salisbury School of English (www.english-school.co.uk) became a part of the WELS Group of International House schools (www.ihwelsgroup.com). The beautiful medieval city of Salisbury is a truly traditional English place. It is located one and a half hours South West of London within easy reach of the Capital and offering easy access to the South Coast and other places of interest such as the City of Bath, Portsmouth. The city itself has a population of 40,000 and offers a wide range of services and facilities to the visitor. It is an excellent city in which to study English. Although it is an historic city Salisbury is also a vibrant, living centre with a first

class range of special events, entertainment, restaurants, places to stay, leisure facilities,

shops and a weekly market. For further information about Salisbury

London through the Eyes of a Ukrainian

“The beginning of January isalways exciting for me as theIHWO Directors of StudiesConference - is held annually in London at thistime of the year. Not only do I learn a lot about my job and have a chance to exchange teaching ideas with DOSes from all over the world, but I also use this opportunity to explore the city.It is no exaggeration to say that London offers visitors more than any other city in Europe. Beside such familiar landmarks as Big Ben, St. Paul’s Cathedral, Tower Bridge and now the London Eye ferris wheel, it also boasts some of the greatest museums, art galleries and parks in the world. On the other hand, the number of homeless people sleeping in the streets is not just a stain but an adulteration on the rich robes of this Europe’s richest city.As much as anything else, London is the link that unites all of us who are studying the English language. You can hear Russian and French, Italian and German, Ukrainian and Spanish in the streets of the city but all of these nations communicate in English when in London. When I think of this amazing city, I cannot but quote Benjamin Disraeli, who said, ‘London is a nation, not a city’.” Tanya

LONDON

“It was my first visit to London and I had enough time to fall in love with this amazing city, though I enjoyed its sceneries mostly at night. In my opinion, the Tower Bridge is the most beautiful construction in London, especially when illuminated at night. Two other my favourite places in the English capital are the British Museum and the National Gallery. It was unusual to see that even such popular museums and galleries are free of charge for public. I believe, it helps britons to know and value their heritage and makes tourists come to London again and again.” Lena

VOCABHINT!!!!!

basil - базилік dijon - французька гірчицяgarnish - гарнирwedge - шматочок

1. Mix all the ingredients together with the oil and let sit for about 15 minutes to allow the flavours to mix well. Place chicken breast in mixture, making sure the breast is completely soaked in it. Cover, and place in refrigerator for AT LEAST 2 hours. [Overnight is the best]2. Place on a tray or piece of aluminum foil, and bake in oven for about 15-20 minutes at 300 degrees celcius. The time will vary depending on the size of your oven. Take out of oven and let cool for 3-5 minutes.3. You can serve it as a whole piece or slice it so that it makes strips. If slicing it into strips, it makes a great addition on top of a salad. Garnish with a lemon wedge. ENJOY!!! This recipe has been offered by Ajay
