The Academy of Hospitality and Tourism at Erasmus Hall Campus prides itself on providing students with work-based learning experiences through an extensive network of partnerships. In addition to opportunities in the hospitality industry, students explore a broad range of career options and learn about the education and training requirements for occupations that match their career interests. In this session students will share their experiences and how these have exponentially impacted their college and career choices. Our Community Demographics•Flatbush, a community in the New York City borough of Brooklyn, has several neighborhoods.

Our School Demographics•Our school population is a direct reflection of the Flatbush community. Most of our students are first generation immigrants.

•Almost half our students are from families with income below the poverty line and consequently qualify for free or reduced cost lunch.

Junior Achievement of New York (JANY) is a non-profit organization that connects volunteers with students in grades K-12. Through in-class activities, after-school programs, and workplace experiences, students acquire the confidence they need to succeed in their future careers and in life. Exploring Learning for Life Career Education ProgramDeveloped by The Greater New York Councils, Boy Scouts of America, Exploring is a school-to-career and school-to-higher education program that delivers worksite-based learning experiences. Through this program, students learn about careers at companies, governmental agencies and community-based organizations. The program at each company, agency, and organization is based on five areas of emphasis: career opportunities, life skills, service learning, character education, and leadership experience.

College Now is CUNY’s largest collaborative program with the New York City secondary public school system. The program offers dual enrollment and college-readiness programs in more than 350 NYC high schools and enrolls close to 20,000 students annually. In all, there are seventeen campus-based College Now programs which are overseen by a central office. Although the program varies from school to school and campus to campus, they are similar in terms of overall structure, implementation and goals.

Medgar Evers Educational Talent Search Program

The Educational Talent Search Program was developed through the Higher

Education Act of 1965. The Program identifies low-income and first-generation college students to provide them with encouragement, support and assistance.

The mission of Educational Talent Search is, specifically, to identify and encourage eligible youth in grades six through twelve, and out-of-school youth up to the age of 27, to finish high school and enroll in post-secondary education.

Services include small group tutoring, academic and personal counseling, college campus tours, test taking, time management skills training and counseling, workplace tours and job shadowing opportunities.

The Selective Corporate Internship Program (SCIP) is a six-week program designed to provide a corporate experience for rising high school juniors and seniors. During the internship, the students meet with corporate executives from leading companies, attend corporate site visits, sharpen their technical and writing skills, learn about business etiquette, and much more. SCIP offers a rare inside view of corporate America. Participants develop lifelong friendships and the skills and confidence necessary to fulfill their potential.
