Pastor’s Corner Dear Parishioners of St. Ignatius,

Among the many wonderful assignments that I have had as a Jesuit over the past 40 years was that of serving as vocation direc-tor from 1992 to 1999. During that time I heard countless voca-tion stories. Yet, I knew that none of these stories were really complete. No one can ever fully convey her or his total faith journey even after a number of attempts at trying to tell it fully. With each telling the best we can do is emphasize or highlight one or another aspect of our story. Yet, no matter what is em-phasized or highlighted, God’s loving, merciful hand is definitely revealed.

Last Saturday I again had the privilege to hear vocation stories, this time from members of our own Parish Pastoral Council members. We began our meeting in a spirit of prayerful faith sharing, with each person sharing some aspect of how she or he became so committed to faith, the spiritual life and our parish community.

What we all realized in the course of our listening to one another was that there are so many more vocation stories to be heard. These lie inside each and every one of you sitting in our pews week after week. We simply need time to tell them and listening ears to hear them.

A realization of my particular finite limitations in this regard was underscored in a draft of a new, forthcoming book that Christo-pher Lowney (author of among others, Heroic Leadership, Hero-ic Living, and Pope Francis: Why He Leads the Way He Leads) asked me to read and comment upon a few months ago. He writes that Canon Law (section 529) indicates pretty much that a priest “ought to know the faithful entrusted to his care, visit fam-ilies, and share in their cares, anxieties, and griefs; he ought to make special efforts to seek out the poor, the afflicted, the lonely, those exiled from their country and similarly those weighed down by special difficulties.”

How I wish I could! It would truly be a humbling honor and privilege if I could fulfill all that this Canon envisions and there-by have time to listen to every single telling of the various voca-tion and other stories that lie in each and every one of your hearts. Yet, given the size of our parish, if Fr. Jim and I worked 24/7, we still could not succeed in fulfilling this Canon.

This understandable human limitation at our parish is among the reasons why I proposed to the Pastoral Council that this year’s theme for our parish might be: From Disciples to Apostles. This theme was suggested to me from a book I happened to come upon during my annual retreat this past April: Divine Renovation: From a Maintenance to a Missional Parish by James Mallon.

Now some of you might be saying – “isn’t being a disciple and an apostle simply the same thing?” Certainly, it is true that we often use these terms quite interchangeably. Each term, however, has a different Greek and Latin root, indicating its differing meanings. In a nutshell, to be a disciple is to be a learner, while to be an apostle is to be one who is sent forth with that learning.

In the year ahead, we will spend time reflecting as a parish com-munity upon just how this past year’s theme of MERCY can move us from being disciples to becoming a parish of mercy-filled apostles, or as Pope Francis likes to say “missionary disci-ples.”

A first step along this path from disciple to apostle is for all of us to take up our Baptismal commitment to share as co-laborers in fulfilling for our parish what Canon 529 seems to place solely upon the shoulders of priests. To that end, we might begin to share and listen to one another’s stories of our journey of faith. What richness there would be in hearing about the vocational stories each of us holds in her or his heart. Even knowing some-one for years does not necessarily mean that we really know about her or his faith journey, her or his vocation story. Imagine how even more alive and welcoming our parish would be if we

could engage with one another in that kind of sharing. Surely it would empower us in our growing as disciples and apostles, for we are ever and always both.

So, let the stories and the listening begin!

Fr. Joe

Faith Formation News Fr. Jim Coughlin is currently serving as Interim Director of Faith Formation until a permanent director can be found. There is a great deal of activity as we move forward with the formation program. As we prepare for this new year of faith formation, there are a few things to keep in mind:

Registration for Faith Formation Classes remains open. In order to ensure that all resources are available to stu-dents, we ask Families to register their children as soon as possi-ble. Classroom instruction will begin on Sunday October 2, 2016. https://stignatiusparish.formstack.com/forms/class_registration_2016

Catechists are needed! Boston College students have been exceedingly generous in volunteering. Yet, a formation class-room is at its best when filled with the wisdom of the ages. Par-ents have unique insight into how to communicate with chil-dren, so your gifts are very much needed at this time. Please email Fr. Coughlin if you are interested. Tuition for Faith For-mation will be waved for the children of catechists.

There will be a mandatory meeting of all catechists on Sunday September 25, 2016 at 11 am. This will be a chance to meet oth-er catechists, review material on safe-environment issues, and obtain materials for your classes. The meeting will last about 2 hours and lunch will be provided.

Open Registration for the Family Arts Based Program has begun. This wonderful program requires a commitment on the part of the whole family; at least one adult must be com-mitted to the program. Everyone takes turns presenting, prepar-ing, and learning, so the instructional burden is shared. This program is a marvelous way to grow in faith together as a family. If you would like to register for the Family Arts Based Program, please email Fr. Jim, [email protected], the names and ages of everyone registering. The fee for this program is $250 per family. Please note that at least one adult catechist from each family must attend the catechist meeting on September 25 mentioned above.

The Confirmation Program. We are pleased to announce that our new Auxiliary Bishop, Robert Reed, will celebrate the Sacrament of confirmation for our parish. This new appoint-ment necessitated a change of the previously announced date. Confirmation will now be celebrated on Friday evening, April 28, 2017 at 7 pm.

At the advice and experience of other parishes and programs, we have moved to a single Confirmation retreat. This will be held on the weekend of March 3-5, 2017 and is mandatory for those making their confirmation. Those in the first year of Confirma-tion preparation are also welcome to attend. In lieu of the previ-ously announced fall retreat, we will have a day of recollection on Saturday, November 5, 2016 from 10 am to 9 pm. All those cur-rently in the Confirmation program, along with past graduates of our Confirmation program, are welcome to attend. There will be no fee and details will be forthcoming.

Lastly, some things remain the same; some things will be new. My hope is that the new helps us to grow and is a way to avoid stagnation. Let us rejoice as the Lord gives us new wine skins!

Peace, J im C o u gh lin , S J

Outreach Ministries Next weekend, the bulletin cover will feature our Outreach Min-istries and the many efforts in which we are engaged to assist those who have many different needs. In addition, the Outreach table in the upper church Gathering Space will display materials that our ministry partners would like to share with us in promot-ing their works and needs and seeking volunteers.

The coming months will bring a cost in-crease in utility bills and, for many families, that will mean less money available for food. It’s time for us to begin collecting food cards to have for families that come to us looking for assistance. $10 cards for Stop and Shop or Star/Shaw’s are best. You can drop the cards in the Sunday collection basket or bring them to the Parish Office. Thank you!

Habitat at-the-door Collection: Next weekend, September 24/25, we’ll be conducting our annual at-the-door collection to fund our up-coming Habitat Build Days. Your gen-erosity has enabled St. Ignatius to part-ner with Habitat for Humanity Greater

Boston in building affordable housing for deserving families for close to 20 years. Look for the hard hat at any exit!

Shattuck Fourth Tuesday: On Tuesday, Sep-tember 27, we’ll be continuing our long-standing tradition of serving supper and providing des-serts and ice cream to the Guests at Pine Street Inn Shattuck Shelter. Your dessert contribution will be greatly appreciated.

Seniors Parishioners’ Activities: Senior parishioners meet regularly for lunch and various activities – and just plain relaxation and catching up! If you’d like to be added to the mailing list that announces these activities, please call Sr. Diane, 617-552-6107, to have your name included.

An Evening with Dr. James O’Connell: On Thursday, October 6, Dr. O’Connell, the found-er of Boston Health Care for the Homeless Program and author of Stories from the Shadows, will be with us to share stories from his book and from his 30+ years at BHCHP. Add this one to your calen-dar – 7PM in the Lannon Chapel.

Music Ministry at St. Ignatius All of our Music Ministry groups are welcoming in new mem-bers. For information, see the flyers on the bulletin boards or check the Music Ministry page of the website. You can also con-tact Michael Burgo, Director of Music Ministry at 552-6108 or [email protected]

Children’s Choir Begins Our Children’s Choir is for students, grades 3-6 (with 2nd grad-ers welcome to try out via interview), who enjoy singing and learning about music in a fun, supportive environment. Re-hearsals are Wednesday afternoons at 4:30 in the choir room. For more information, contact our organist Matthew Anderson at 617-552-6114 or [email protected]. Looking forward to see-ing you at our first rehearsal on September 14th!
