“Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.” If your mother was like mine, you know it’s proper to use the word “may” when asking permission. As in “May I borrow your character?” In this case, however, permission isn’t what’s needed. It’s capability. And the answer is, no, you can’t borrow someone else’s character. You have to chisel your own. This is the lesson five foolish virgins provided us in the parable. Think of the wedding feast as the reign of God, and the ten women holding lamps as those who put their hope in God’s kingdom. They stand in for us: lighting the way so that others can share in the celebration of this good news. But five lamps holders didn’t provide for the length of this vigil. They ran out of virtue, or conviction, or integrity. So they want to sponge off the persevering character of others. And alas, they can’t. We can’t. No one can be good in our stead. No once can be just or kind or holy or forgiving for us. You and I, we bring our own oil to this celebration. How do you fuel the lamp of enthusiasm for life in Christ?

Thank you to all of the parents who have embraced our new Stewardship Program. Please remember that you were given a set of envelopes to last you for the next 5 weeks. Please turn in ONE envelope per child per week. We will be giving another set at the end of this month that will take us through Advent and into the month of January. Remember to take this opportunity to speak to your children about thanking God for all that we have and that giving back to God is right and good stewardship of the gifts that He has given to us.

Taizé Prayer The prayer service’s emphasis is “peace.” You are invited to pray for your needs and the needs of our troubled world at a Taizé Prayer Service held on November 19, at 7 pm in the Benedictine Sisters’ Monastery Chapel located at 840 S. Main Street, Mt. Angel, OR.

Taizé is a contemplative experience and welcomes people from all faiths to come together in prayer, silence, music and scripture. Please join us as we begin a new cycle of services through-out the Fall and Spring.

During the season of Advent, the Catholic Church calls us to prepare our lives for the coming of our Lord, Jesus Christ, and the St. Vincent de Paul Community joyfully celebrates Christmas Novena Masses, in this Advent season, as we did last year.

We will start on Friday, December 15th, at 6 pm with bilingual Holy Rosary (English and Spanish), trilingual Simbang Gabi Mass (readings in Tagalog, Spanish and English), and ending with the Posada sung in Spanish. All Masses will start at 6 pm, except the two Saturdays which will begin with the regular 5:30 pm Mass, fol-lowed by a bilingual Holy Rosary, and the Posada sung in Spanish. On the last Saturday after the Posada, we will come together as a parish family in Reedy Hall for a big community potluck, all are invited and welcome.

Don’t worry about detail preparations, just come and join us to glorify God, embracing our diversity and hav-ing the liturgical sense of unity and harmony. “The Family that Prays Together Stays Together in God’s Grace and Love”.

Durante la temporada de Adviento, la Iglesia Católica nos llama a preparar nuestras vidas para la venida de nuestro Señor, Jesucristo, y la Comunidad de San Vicente de Paul celebra alegremente las Novenas de Navidad, en esta temporada de advenimiento, como lo hicimos el año pasado.

Comenzaremos el viernes 15 de diciembre a las 6 pm con el Santo Rosario bilingüe (inglés y español), la misa trilingüe Simbang Gabi (lecturas en tagalo, español e inglés), finalizando con el canto de la Posada en español. Todas las misas comenzarán a las 6 pm, excepto las dos del sábado que comenzarán con la misa habitual a las 5:30 p.m., seguidas por el Santo Rosario bilingüe y la Posada en español. El último sábado después de la Posada, nos uniremos como familia parroquial en Reedy Hall para una gran comida comunitaria, todos están invitados y bienvenidos.
