Introduction to SteriGuard®

In order to meet healthcare facility protocols, clinical environments require a higher frequency of cleaning with especially harsh disinfectants. This raises a challenge for facility administrators, architects and specifiers as these harsh cleaning regimes place a greater emphasis on coatings to deliver a hard wearing, chemical resistant finish, without sacrificing the aesthetics or low odour/low VOC* requirements. International markets have made inroads into such offers, however in Australia most systems are delivered via conventional paints without specific testing to meet hospital requirements.

As part of the Dulux innovation program, we have worked to deliver this dedicated range of products targeted at clinical environments. These have been thoroughly tested against harsh cleaning regimes to ensure we meet the expectations that come with being the market leader in this space.

Guidelines for product developmentIt is important to note the requirements of infection control departments in healthcare facilities when developing the SteriGuard® range. The regimented cleaning programmes were outlined as being critical in ensuring best practice in infection prevention and control. In order to achieve this, the surface needs to be durable and readily cleanable. Standard paint coatings were not durable enough for these environments.

Of the varying room types in Australian healthcare facilities, isolation rooms were noted as especially useful for preventing the spread of infectious organisms to other patients and staff but it is important to note that all room types including standard rooms and positively/negatively ventilated rooms all serve key purposes in infection control programs.

The researchResearch prepared by Bayer MaterialScience® uncovered a direct need for coatings specific to clinical environments. This coating needed to be useful to hospital administrators who were concerned with meeting facility protocols without sacrificing on aesthetics and durability. Traditional paint coatings were not able to deliver to these very specific needs.

Often hospitals are forced to apply products that:

• Have higher sheen levels and are therefore aesthetically unappealing or have a performance level that is compromised to favour aesthetic appeal (low sheen).

• Are not designed to withstand clinical grade cleaning regimes which are harsher than non clinical environments (chemical resistance).

• Are not designed to withstand the regularity of clinical cleaning cycles in both general and intensive clinical environments (durability).

Please note: the SteriGuard Durable Acrylic Low Sheen formula has been aligned to Bio Level 2 (BL2) which is ANZ aligned to PC2 (Physical Containment Level 2).

The SteriGuard product needed to deliver a low odour, easy to clean, low VOC and hard wearing solution for these facilities and as per the testing and support data, has delivered to these characteristics. The range will become an important component of facility maintenance as cleaning programs and products become more advanced.

What is it?Dulux Professional SteriGuard Durable Acrylic Low Sheen is a premium, hard wearing and chemical resistant interior water based product designed to withstand general cleaning cycles in clinical environments. It is recommended for common use areas such as hospital wards, waiting rooms, nurse stations, aged care facilities, medical practices, public areas and sports facilities. Dulux Professional SteriGuard Durable Acrylic Low Sheen is ideal for common use areas in clinical environments. The low VOC, low odour formula ensures quick return to service with less disruption.

Dulux Professional SteriGuard Durable Acrylic Low Sheen contains Bio-Pruf® Technology, which when combined with clinical cleaning programmes, helps assist in the protection against mould and mildew growth to keep surfaces clean and help maintain good indoor air quality. All Dulux Professional products are designed to meet the application needs of professional painters.

3. Clean up all equipment with water.

4. Allow the surface to dry for at least seven days prior to rigorous cleaning in order to ensure maximum durability.

High intensity clinical cleaning cycles use harsh cleaning agents such as chlorine agents, quaternary ammonium agents, disinfecting wipes, low level biocides and benzalkonium chloride on a frequent basis.

Application details1. Mix the contents of Part A and Part B together

thoroughly by hand using a paddle stirrer. Allow to stand for 5 minutes. Please pour ALL of Part B into Part A. Do not part mix.

Apply one coat of Dulux Professional SteriGuard Ultra. If paint is left over and still within pot life, apply second coat† or apply second coat after overnight dry with a new kit.

2. Use a brush or synthetic roller (Clear – short nap length, White – medium nap length).

3. Please note that the product cannot be used beyond the pot life. This will compromise the application and final appearance of the product on the wall as well as its performance properties.

Drying times on a day of around 25°C and 50% humidity:

Note: Under cooler or humid conditions allow longer times. Ensure temperature is above 10°C during application and drying.

SteriGuard® Ultra FAQsWhat are the gloss levels?White: Gloss Level 4-10 at a 60 degree viewing angle (Low Sheen).Clear: Gloss Level 7-12 at a 60 degree viewing angle (Low Sheen).

Is the product tintable?Yes, the white base is tintable with Decorama tinters. Maximum tinter 2Y/L. Available in any Dulux colour tinted from a white base. Please remember to tint Part A only. Clear is not tintable.

How many coats do I require?The product requires two coats as mentioned above, however some colours may require more than two coats, especially when painting over dark colours.

Can I spray this product?This product is not to be sprayed (contains isocyanate).

When brushing and rolling this product appropriate PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) should always be worn. This includes safety glasses, impervious gloves and overalls as a minimum. Refer to the product Safety Data Sheet for full information.

What is the pot life of this product?The pot life of SteriGuard Ultra is 2 hours at 25°C (3.75L mixed volume).

Is there a shelf life on this product?Yes, we recommend 12 months from the date of manufacture which is outlined on the product.

SteriGuard Ultra AdvicePlease note: Once Part B is added to Part A, do not reseal the can containing the mixture. Use the product within its pot life (2 hours).

Left over mixed product will continue to react, releasing carbon dioxide. After extended periods (>6 hours) mixed product may foam and expand. Any remaining mixture (<1.5L) should be left to dry in the un-sealed 4L can. Remaining volumes greater than 1.5L may over flow from the 4L container.

Application details 1. Brush, roller or spray.2. Stir contents thoroughly before and during use with

a broad flat stirrer using an upward lifting action.3. Brush/roller: Apply evenly, dividing area into patches

about 50-60 square centimetres. Paint one patch at a time working back into previously applied paint. Finally lay off each patch with light vertical strokes again lapping lightly into previously painted patches. On wall areas use a 5-9mm nap roller to achieve the smoothest finish. Do not lay off with a brush.

4. Generally thinning is not recommended, however, under hot conditions Dulux Hot Weather Thinner should be added to improve application performance to maximum of 50ml per litre.

Anti microbial and anti mouldPaint samples were tested as per the Japanese Industrial Standard JISZ 2801:2000 ‘Antimicrobial Products – Test for antimicrobial activity and efficacy’ with modifications:

• 5% Nutrient Broth incorporated into the bacterial inoculums to increase the challenge on the antimicrobial properties of the films.

• A test piece without paint film was used as the control for the purposes of calculation to eliminate the impact of paint film components on the total antimicrobial activity.

Can SteriGuard® Durable Acrylic Low Sheen be tinted?Yes, it can be tinted to any Dulux colour from a white base.

Is there a warranty on the mould resistance of the product?No, there is no warranty period on the mould resistance. However, in-house mould resistance testing against in-house and competitor products show it to perform at least equivalent, and in some cases better, in helping to resist mould growth.
