Once upon a time, Medinah Country Club came to the rescue of the Western Golf Association.
It was 1961, and the WGA was in desperate need of revamping how it conducted the Western Open.
For decades, the WGA took the tournament to cit-ies and clubs that wanted it. The hosts were respon-sible for the purse, and the WGA ran the golf.
That worked until 1961, when the board of Sci-oto Country Club decided as 1960 closed that it just couldnβt raise the purse money in 1961. Scrambling, WGA executive director Marshall Dann and his board arranged for the 1961 Western to be played at Blythe-field Country Club, near Grand Rapids, with the WGA taking over supplying the purse and raking in the gate.
But what about 1962?Dann and WGA director Cliff Domin, nicknamed
Mr. Medinah around his club, huddled. Domin offered Medinah for 1962. Dann accepted.
It was an instant success. Arnold Palmer took a look while helicoptering in for his first practice round and said, βWhy donβt they play the Western Open here every year?β
The WGA came back in 1966, but soon after set-tled at Butler National Golf Club, and subsequently at Cog Hill Golf & Country Club.
With the vagabond days having returned, the re-titled BMW Championship needs a Chicago-area site in odd-numbered years. Conway Farms is hosting this year and in 2017, as it did in 2013, but the hat-trick will
be it for the Lake Forest enclave. What about 2019?Once again, enter Medinah.Club members voted June 13 to host the BMW
four years from now, with a vast majority voting in fa-vor. While the revamped No. 1 was looked at, everyone agreed that No. 3, the traditional site of championship golf at the club, will be the course of action.
There will be much less disruption to club play than there was in 2012, when Medinah hosted the Ry-der Cup. Little if any tournament facilities will be placed on No. 1.
It also means that Medinah is essentially out of the running for an PGA or USGA activity in the next little while. While the PGA and Medinah had been talking, the money the PGA was offering to host a PGA Cham-pionship wasnβt in the ballpark of previous $3 million payments for the 1999 or 2006 PGAs.
Itβs a busy time for Medinah. Fresh off the renova-tion of No. 1, the clubβs embarking on a restoration of No. 2, the most original of the three courses designed by Tom Bendelow. Rather than a rerouting (as was done on No. 3) or a rebuilding (as Tom Doak did on No. 1), this will be a restoration of original green sizes and repositioning of bunkers to fit where the ball flies today.
FINALLY: Oak Meadows closes after a July 7 soi-ree for the renovation under the careful eye of Greg Martin. The plan is to reopen in 2017.

The untouchable origin of the modern SlamLater this month, Jordan Spieth goes
for the third leg of the modern Grand Slam at the Old Course in St. Andrews, Scotland.
The location is fitting for several reasons, not the least of which is that the whole modern slam business came into the spotlight on those very links 45 years ago.
For years, the story has been told thusly: Arnold Palmer and Mark McCormack, the sports business pioneer who grew up in Chicago, dreamed up the idea of the modern slam after Palmer won the 1960 U.S. Open.
βGo to St. Andrews and win, and youβll need only to win the PGA to win a modern Grand Slam,β McCormack is said to have told his first and most valuable client.
Not quite. There was another version, one promulgated
by Palmer in βA Golferβs Life,β his 2000 auto-biography. The King and buddy Bob Drum, the Pittsburgh Press golf writer, were flying to Eu-rope after Palmerβs comeback success at Cherry Hills β driving the first green of the final round in a huff after Drum told Palmer of his Open chances, βYou blew it this morning!β β and were talking about Bobby Jonesβ 1930 Grand Slam.
βWhat about a modern slam?β Palmer was said to ask Drum. βWinning the Masters, U.S. Open, British Open and PGA would constitute a modern Grand Slam.β
The Drummer was said to be hesitant at first,
then warmed to the notion and, upon arriving with Palmer in Ireland for the Canada Cup, the international team championship played that year before the Brit-ish Open, told overseas writers of Palmerβs grand quest.
Great story, no?Great story, yes. But itβs only a story.Palmer flew to Ireland with Sam Snead, his
partner on the U.S. team for the Canada Cup, but without Drum. To get there, Palmer and Snead first flew from Denver to New York. On that plane was United Press International sports col-umnist Oscar Fraley, who had covered the Open from Cherry Hills.
Palmer told Fraley, referencing Bobby Jonesβ achievement, βNow Iβve got Grand Slam ideas of my own. Iβd like to add the British Open and the PGA Championship to those Masters and U.S. Open championships this year.β
Palmer added, βI decided early this year that if by some chance I won both the Masters and the (U.S.) Open, Iβd go to Britain for their Open now that I can afford it.β
The seed was placed in Palmerβs head, he said, when he read Jonesβ biography. It germinat-ed when he birdied the last two holes to overhaul Ken Venturi win the Masters, then began to bloom when he birdied six of the first seven at Cherry Hills to rush though the field and win the National Open. But it wilted when he took sec-
ond, a stroke behind Kel Nagle, at St. Andrews. And Palmer never did win the PGA.
Now, McCormack certainly pushed Palmer to play the British Open in 1960, knowing that while the prize money was next to nothing, the exposure there would boost Palmerβs budding endorsement business. The team competition im-mediately before made it that much more logical.
The trip was planned before he won the U.S. Open. Indeed, Palmer was talking up a Grand Slam in March, at the DeSoto Open in Sarasota, Fla.
Fraleyβs report ran in papers across the country on June 20, 1960, two days after Palmer worked his magic at altitude. That night, Fraley reported on Floyd Patterson pummeling Inge-mar Johansson to regain the world heavyweight championship, then flew to Ireland to catch up with Palmer and Snead β and, he wrote later, to collect from both of them on a bet that Johans-son would win.
We suspect it was Fraley who then told his writing brethren of Palmerβs notion of a modern Grand Slam. The Drummer? Sequestered in Pitts-burgh, he first mentioned Palmerβs slam concept on July 3, between columns about Dick Groat and the prospects for the PGA at Firestone.
You probably had not heard of Oscar Fraley for a long time, if at all, before this epistle. But on the side, he wrote a book with lasting televi-sion and cinematic legs: βThe Untouchables.β
Soon, weβll know if the Grand Slam is that, or within young Spiethβs grasp.

An all-American routBy Tim Cronin
βββββThe main question entering the 19th Palmer
Cup, created by and named for Arnold Daniel Palmer, was whether or not the collegians par-ticipating would be at their best following the conclusion of the college season. After all, the
NCAA tournament, which many of the players participated in, is a mental grind. So are the low-er-level NCAA and NAIA showcases.
The answer, handed in with authority: The United States team was very much at its best.
The American squad, a mixture of Division I and lower-level lads, trounced their pals from Eu-
rope who attend Stateside schools all three days. The margin was 18-12, almost equal with the
18.5-11.5 trouncing the Europeans out at Walton Heath Golf Club in England last year.
The turnaround can be credited to the Ameri-cans keeping their foot to the pedal, wanting to finish their foes off.

Just ask Beau Hossler. the Californian who represents Texas in college. He led the U.S. Open while in high school and scored a big victory in last yearβs Western Amateur at Beverly, a title heβll defend in August at Rich Harvest.
βWeβve got a lot of guys who really cared about what weβre doing here,β Hossler said.
He went three-for-four across the four-match competition, including a 2 and 1 victory over Pep Angles of France, which just happened to guaran-tee the outcome in the Americansβ favor.
The U.S. had a 13.5-6.5 lead entering the 10 singles matches. Europeβs Clement Sordot took the opening match, a 2 and 1 victory over Anders Albertson, but the U.S. won the next four to lock up the Cup.
That allowed American coach Bruce Heppler to breathe a sigh of relief. He came into the final day warily, even though his players had posted exemplary numbers in the first three matches.
βPlaying with a big lead is the hardest thing in sports,β Heppler said. βI just told them I wasnβt going to tell them how things were going until their match was over. I wanted to keep them fo-cused on their matches.β
That worked.Probably just about anything would have
worked with Robby Shelton of Alabama and Hunter Stewart of Vanderbilt going 4-0.
Maverick McNealy also went 3-1, paired with Hossler in splitting a pair of partner matches and going 2-0 in singles.
His teammates were so impressed, they voted him the exemption into next yearβs Arnold Palmer Invitational at the Kingβs Bay Hill Resort in Or-lando, Fla. And McNealy was so impressed by his Rich Harvest caddie, Zach Urwiler of Mooseh-eart, that he invited Urwiler to caddie for him at

Itβs not often that the entire Illinois-connected contingent at the U.S. Open makes the cut.
Thatβs one more reason the 115th Open at Chambers Bay was special. All four in the field who were either born or have an affiliation with the state played 72 holes.
Amazingly, the two amateurs of the four led the way. Brian Campbell, weeks after graduating from Illinois, briefly led the Open on Thursday before settling into the field and finishing at 5-over-par 285, his opening 3-under 67 the indica-tion to all that he can play with the pros. (Heβll do so, this time for cash, at the John Deere Classic.)
Campbell was followed by Illinoisβ Nick Hardy. Despite three bogeys on Fridayβs last four holes, the Northbrook native made the cut on the number β 5-over 145 β and brought 14 other play-ers into the weekend. He finished at 10-over 290, scoring 2-under 68 on Sunday, as did Campbell.
βThey came up to me this morning, kind of laughed about it,β Hardy said of Webb Simpson and a handful of others. βI just happened to be the last ones on the course. Just golf kind of.
βComing down on 8 and 9, I kind of knew that 5-over was actually going to make it. Made a really bad swing at 9 and happened to make bo-gey.β

Burge emerges ahead of KellyRedshirt Illinois senior trumps Ohio State regular, 1 up, at Knollwood
By Tim Croninβββββ
The first hint that it could be Alex Burgeβs week at the Knollwood Club wasnβt a hint at all, unless an anvil hitting the rest of the field in the head is a hint.
Burge, a senior at Illinois who redshirted this year, scattered 10 birdies across the 36 holes of stroke-play qualifying for the 96th CDGA Ama-teur Championship. That was more than good enough to earn the Bloomington standout the medalistβs title and the top seed for the Sweet Sixteen.
For once, the curse of the medalist did not take place. Not only was there not a quick exit, Burge was the last man standing. He took on Ohio Stateβs Tim βTee-Kβ Kelly in the championship match and scored a 1 up victory in the 36-hole final on June 25.
That adds Burgeβs name to a list of winners that starts with Chick Evans, who had the great good sense to capture the 1914 inaugural.
βIβve played CDGA events my whole life, so to join the list of winners is something special,β Burge said.
His title triumph was the closest anyone came to stopping him, with Kelly 3 up in the morning round of the championship match. Burgeβs first three matches were progressively closer, but when you open with a 6 and 5 rout over Sean Graham,
closer is relative. His 5 and 4 victory over Charlie Netzel wasnβt close at all. And if he was worried during his 3 and 2 win over Derek Meinhart in the semifinals, well, it didnβt show.
Burge, as might be expected of someone who plays for Illinois coach Mike Small, is one cool customer. Small, with a loaded team, held Burge in reserve this year, but heβll be a Fighting Illini regular in the 2015-16 college season.
βI did a really good job taking it one shot at a time,β Burge said. βThe course definitely caught my eye. It is tree-lined, similar to a course I grew up on.β
That would be The Den at Fox Creek, though that winds as much through luxury homes than pure parkland. But it worked for Burge.
He clawed his way back against Kelly with birdies on Nos. 15, 16 and 18 β the CDGAβs Matt Baylor called it βa 35-foot snakeβ β to go to lunch all square.
Burge would never trail in the afternoon, but the match was all square after 32 holes. Burgeβs birdie on the par-4 15th via a 20-foot putt put him 1 up, and when Kelly sailed his tee shot on the 16th into the right tees, Burge went dormie 2 and effectively settled things.
βIt was my worst drive of the week at prob-ably the worst time it could happen,β Kelly said.
Give Kelly credit for grace under pressure in the form of a 30-foot birdie putt to extend the
96th CDGA Amateur Championship
match to the final hole, but it was too late for a Hollywood finish.
Burge now chases the elusive double. Nobody has won both the CDGA Championship and Illi-nois Amateur in the same year since 1988, when future Illinois Golf Hall of Famer Joel Hirsch pulled it off. And only 10 players have won both in their lifetimes.

βββββGolf is a game one can play forever, but for a
junior, the time to get certain things accomplished is limited. Every day that goes by shortens a juniorβs career.
The anticipation for and the pressure during the big events is thus heightened, especially if the clock is running out.
That was the case for Kyle Slattery of Rockford at the 46th Illinois Junior at Makray Memorial Golf Course on June 25. Once upon a time, his father, Ed, the head pro at Mauh-Nah-Tee-See Country Club, had won the title.
Now, after two rounds put him at 1-over-par 143 entering the final round, equal with Jordan Hahn and three strokes behind leader Ethan Far-nam, Slattery had his best and last chance.
And of that trio, Slattery played the best on a

Just short Kyle Slatteryβs final round 69 was the dayβs best, but needed to be one lower for a playoff.
soggy day. He posted a second straight 2-under 69 β and it wasnβt enough. Farnamβs even par 71 for an aggregate of 2-under 211, highlighted by steady play down the stretch, carried the day over Slattery by a stroke.
Farnam, 16, had finished ninth last year, a sum-mer in which he also qualified for the U.S. Junior. But winning is a tonic, and heβd like to make the U.S. Junior again, plus add the U.S. Amateur to his resume.
The final round came down to finish thanks to early fireworks from Slattery.
βI knew I had to make a lot of birdies, and I made three on the front,β Slattery said, the front-nine highlight a 7-iron approach to five feet on the ninth.
βI was feeling good. I had momentum my way,β Slattery said.
Then came the back nine.βI was just trying to keep it even,β Farnam said.
βI wasnβt playing that well today. I just tried to fight through it.β
Slatteryβs missed short putt on the 10th coupled with Farnamβs 10-foot birdie putt on the 11th swung the momentum back to the pride of Crystal Lake.
βI missed a few short ones and he made a few,β Slattery said. βI knew I had to make a few more birdies. We parred all the holes through 17. I knew I had to either birdie or eagle. I made a chip close and made birdie, but he made a great par, so hats off to him.β
A greater par than Farnam had planned on the par 5. He admitted to chunking his wedge shot. It stopped on the front of the green with the cup al-most all the way back.
Farnam called it a β100-foot putt,β and if it was, he hit it 96 feet, and was able to clear up the par to grab the Slovitt Cup.
Hahn, from Spring Grove, and Northbrookβs Daniel Cole had scored even-par 71 on the open-ing day to lead the way over Winnetkaβs Matthew Murlick by two strokes. Farnam and Slattery were among those at 74.
But Farnamβs 5-under 66 in the second was the round of the tournament, and moved him to the lead entering the final lap.
Slatteryβs closing 69 was matched by Orion Yamat of Niles, who used it to climb to solo third at 4-over 217. Hahn ended up fourth after a 76, finish-ing eight strokes behind Farnam. Winnetkaβs Mat-thew Murlick was fifth at 7-over 220.

Right down the middle Glenwoodieβs short par-4 17th offered a respite after the rigors of the 16th, one of Chicagolandβs best holes.
By Tim CroninReporting from Glenwood
βββββThe whole idea in 1989, what is now called the IllInoIs
Golfer Challenge Junior Golf Championship was started, was to give young golfers a chance to play a good course for a real championship at a reasonable price.
No matter if it was Pulitzer or The Daily Southtown or SouthtownStar, or now IllInoIs Golfer fronting the operation, the goal has always been met.
And the competition has almost always exceeded expecta-tions. Such was the case again on July 1, when the 27th edition was conducted at Glenwoodie Golf Club in Glenwood, as al-ways the site of the championship.
From a total field of 50 players, there were four deserving winners:
β’ Gehrig Hollatz, whose 1-under-par 71 carried him to a three-stroke victory over Michael Barber in the Boys 16-to-18 Division;
β’ Christian Snyder, who posted a 4-over 76 early in the Boys 13-to-15 Division and saw nobody match or exceed it;
β’ Kelly Barker, who survived a sudden-death playoff in the most improbable of fashions to capture the Girls 16-to-18 Divi-sion;
β’ and Jane Mikula, who won the three-strong Girls 13-to-15 Division with a 35-over 107.
Their stories begin on the next page. Scores are on Page 16.

nior golf road. He picked Milliken after considering Monmouth and Carthage, and. while heβll play for Milliken, doesnβt see a career in golf beckoning.
βBusiness, maybe accounting,β he said. All the better to add up low scores.Ryan Dahlkamp of Crown Point was third with
a 6-over 78. A double-bogey 5 on the third hole put him behind, and Hollatz and Barber gradually pulled away.
Unflappable Snyderβs 76 captures Dann trophyThe goal of any tournament director is to pair
players of comparable ability, so all can enjoy the round even if theyβre not in contention.
Christian Snyder wasnβt quite in that position in the Boys 13-to-15 Division of the IllInoIs Golf-er Challenge Junior Golf Championship at Glen-woodie Golf Club in Glenwood.
A fine player, happenstance paired him with a duo that failed to break 100.
No problem. Snyder, a 15-year-old from New Lenox, cruised around Glenwoodie in 4-over-par 76 and scored a two-stroke victory over Oak Forestβs Jack Dykema to claim the Marshall Dann Trophy.
βI just got to know the kids,β Snyder said. βThatβs what youβre supposed to do in golf, have a good time.β
Snyder splashed three birdies on his card, in-cluding a brace on the 12th and 13th. It was on the 12th, the picturesque par-3 of 121 yards, that he nearly had a lifetime memory.
βAlmost aced it,β Snyder said. βIt was an 8-iron, the wind was left to right, the ball faded that way, and I heard it hit the pin.β
Hollatz goes long and lowto win the Joe
From the moment the pairings were issued, it was clear the title in the Boys 16-to-18 Division of the 27th IllInoIs Golfer Challenge Junior Golf Championship could come down to two men: Beecherβs Michael Barber and Lockportβs Gehrig Hollatz.
The Milliken-ticketed Barber scored four straight IHSA regional titles playing for the Beech-er Bobcats. Butler-bound Hollatz was a threat for the Porters every time he teed it up.
They didnβt disappoint on Wednesday. Barber went out in 1-under-par 35. Hollatz recovered from a three-putt bogey after a 295-yard drive on the par-4 first hole with a birdie on the second and went out in 1-over 37.
After each player had trouble on the treacher-ous par-4 11th, back-to-back birdies on the par-3 12th and par-5 13th allowed Hollatz to pull even.
The break came on the par-4 17th, a runt of a hole at 284 yards from the newish white tee, down in the valley. Barber struggled to a double-bogey 6. Hollatz scored a birdie 3. Therein was the differ-ence in Hollatzβs winning 1-under-par 71 and Bar-berβs runner-up 2-over 74. For his effort, Hollatz was awarded the 2015 iteration of the Joe Jemsek Trophy, named after the Hall of Famer who long leased Glenwoodie.
Two fine rounds. One hole the difference.βI did not know what to hit,β Hollatz said of his
quandary on the tee. βI finally hit driver and was 10 yards in front of the green.β
A chip and a putt equaled a 3, while Barber doubled that.
Hollatzβs round was up and down early β he
drilled a wedge to five feet from 115 yards on the second hole for a bird, then sailed his second on the par-4 fourth out of bounds β and then settled into a comfort zone that featured, with the exception of the 11th hole, nothing but pars and birdies.
βIt was the first time Iβd seen the course,β Hol-latz said. βIf I had a practice round, Iβd have put myself in better spots.β
Heβll make sure to have a practice round at Il-linois Stateβs Weibring course in advance of U.S. Amateur qualifying. Heβd dearly like to make the field of 312 that will tee it up at Olympia Fields Country Club in August.
For Barber, this is just about the end of his ju-

The two-footer for a deuce was followed by a birdie on the par-5 13th. Dykema, two groups be-hind, played those two holes in par-bogey, and the final five holes in 4-over to Snyderβs 2-over.
Snyder, going into his junior year at St. Rita, credits Mustangs coach Pete Godfrey for keeping his swing in the right place.
βWhen he sees something, he tells me right away,β Snyder said.
There was no reason for Godfrey to say any-thing but βGood jobβ on Wednesday.
Dykemaβs 78 was solid from the start. He opened and closed the front nine with birdies and turned in 1-over 37, a stroke better than Snyder, but
three 6s on his back-nine card, including a double-bogey on Glenwoodieβs signature 16th, dropped him into second place.
But for a rookie β and not just in the Challenge β it was a fine showing.
βIβve played a lot the last few days, but Iβve never played in a tournament,β Dykema said. βI guess it was really fun today.β
The 40-foot birdie putt on the first hole was fun. So was the 12-footer on the ninth for a 3, set up by an approach from 70 yards. And, going into his freshman year at Wheaton Academy, where his dad will be an assistant coach, the expectation is of even more fun.
Kevin Healy of Evergreen Park took third, with a 12-over 84.
Barker repeats in three-hole playoff
βI canβt believe it! We tied!β Kelly Barker said when looking at her and Elizabeth Stallaβs score-cards at Glenwoodie Golf Course in Glenwood. βNow what?β
A sudden-death playoff for the championship of the Girls 16-to-18 Division, of course.
Barker and Stalla posted 19-over-par 91s that took varying paths to the final number. They then embarked in an odyssey that was as dramatic and filled with more surprises and swings in momentum as any of the previous 15 playoffs in Challenge his-tory since the championshipβs inception in 1989.
Howβs this for a three-hole adventure over a pair of par 4s and a par 3: Barker, 5-6-8; Stalla, 5-6-9.
This was scrappy rather than sloppy golf. When
Barker tapped in on the 145-yard third hole for a quintuple-bogey 8 after dunking a pair of balls in the water of the par-3, she could claim the first repeat victory in the division awarding the Carol McCue Trophy since Angela Dehning won four in succession from 2003 to 2006.
It was a wild way to all but conclude her junior career. The 18-year-old Palos Heights resident has graduated from Marist and will attend Benedictine University in Lisle in the fall.
βIβm been trying to play as much as I can, but this is my first tournament of the summer,β Barker said after the 21-hole test.
Her 6 on the par-5 18th hole forced extra holes

Bogeys on the first playoff hole, Stalla two-put-ting from 15 feet and Barker matching her from 36 feet, moved the duo to the second, where a pond fronting the green makes approaches daunting.
Barkerβs second from a perfect lie in the fair-way landed in the grungy hazard and trickled back into the pond. Stalla hammered her approach from the left rough well over the back of the green.
Since she didnβt clear the hazard, Barker had to hit her fourth across the pond, landing 25 feet past the cup. Stalla had a difficult third, a pitch to a green running away and with the pond behind it. And when she hit it, her heart was in her mouth.
βIt was a very tough shot; I couldnβt really see the green or anything,β Stalla said. βI was just pray-ing that it didnβt go in the water. Iβm just glad it stayed somewhere within play.β
It stopped on the far fringe. From there, Stalla putted to within 18 inches, and after Barker two-putted for a double-bogey 6, looked to be able to wrap up the title with a tap-in for a 5.
In a playoff, there are no easy tap-ins. Stallaβs putt horseshoed out. She, too, would make a 6.
βIt was not my best putt,β she deadpanned later. βI thought I had it. It was just my nerves getting to me. At least I knocked it in for the tie.β
What followed was surreal. Both players splashed their tee shots into the pond on the forced-carry hole, and by a large margin. From the drop zone, Stalla airmailed an iron over the green and into the creek well behind it near the fourth tee.
βMy rangefinder kind of shot the tree behind instead of the actual pin,β Stalla said. βIt read 115 instead of 67.β
Advantage Barker? Only until she chunked her third into the pond again.
βIt might of been a combination of us being ut-terly exhausted, but we both wanted to keep push-ing to see how far we could actually take it,β Barker said.
What happened was Barker finally hitting dry land while Stalla was well short, and Barker even-tually two-putting for a quintuple-bogey 8 from 20 feet. Stalla missed her tying putt and settled for a 9.
βI was putting really, really well today,β Barker said. βI was happy with that.β
And the victory. Stalla at least gets to try again next year.
Danielle Collina of Palos Heights was third, fir-ing a 107.
Mikula hangs in to win Van Wie in Girls 13-15Jane Mikula will be an incoming freshman at

golf team with a trophy on her shelf. The 14-year-old Chicagoan grabbed the final
prize of the IllInoIs Golfer Challenge Junior Golf Championship, specifically the Virginia Van Wie Trophy, by scoring 35-over 107 to win the Girls 13-to-15 Division at Glenwoodie Golf Course in Glenwood.
It wasnβt the lowest score for a Challenge winner, but it got the job done.
To Mikula, the key was the start. Literally, the first swing in competition.
βThe first drive,β she said. βStarting off well helps.β
With only two other competitors, she was able to keep tabs on Gianna Miritello and MacKenzie Zions, who also happen to be Marist-affiliated. Mikula beat Miritello by five strokes and Zions by seven.
βSome of it was difficult,β Mikula said. βThe back nine, I just had to stick with it.β
She was able to negotiate Glenwoodieβs fa-bled finish after a quintuple-bogey 9 on the par-5 13th, three strokes ahead of Zions and four ahead of Miritello.
Voila! A big trophy to signify her first win of the year following a camp for present and pro-spective Marist teammates and her regular Tues-day appearance in the Meadows of Blue Island Junior League.

Hey! Yu captures Western JuniorFrom IG News Services
βββββTheyβre not asking who Yu is anymore. Not after his comeback victory in sudden-
death to win the 98th Western Junior at Riverside Golf Club.
Yu is Chun An Yu, a 16-year-old who moved from the Republic of China, a.k.a. Taiwan, to Or-lando in January to better serve his golf game.
Beating Yechun βCarlβ Yuan in sudden death on the first playoff hole was his breakthrough.
Yu needed only a par to claim the title when Yuan recorded his fifth straight bogey, a runs that took the future Washington Husky from the lead into the playoff and finally to runner-up status.
βI feel so good,β Yu said. βWinning this tour-nament was my dream from the moment I found out about it. This is a dream come true.β
The playoff was the first for Americaβs oldest national junior golf championship since the West-ern Golf Association switched the format from match play to stroke play in 1999.
Yuan, from Lake Mary, Fla., had a four-stroke lead through 14. He bogeyed the next four holes to finish at even par 70β280, forcing the playoff with Yu. His 2-under 68 for 280 was an hour old.
βI think I lost concentration a little bit to-wards the end,β Yuan said. βWhen the body gets tired, itβs hard to pull the trigger and get the right shot. In golf, you canβt go back. This is a learning experience for me.β
Western Springsβ Daniel Hudson tied for third at 2-over 282, with a closing 3-under 67.

It is the golf tournament that refused to die.The one started and then saved by golf
nuts like Bob Fry from the Quad Cities, by a commissioner who had a soft spot in
his heart for it, by a famous second banana, by a fast-food chain, and finally by the realization of golf fans from 100 miles around β and more than a few from Chicago β that the little tournament was worth turning out for.
Oh, and a sponsorship by the largest company in the area didnβt hurt either.
This is the John Deere Classic, where Grand Slam hopeful Jordan Spieth will be in attendance this month, but once upon a time, it was the Quad Cities Open, and most players with a tenth of his resume wouldnβt have given it the time of day.
Play where the week before the British Open? Or the same week? Or the week after? Are you crazy?
Or the week after, for that matter. Before Deere and Co. arrived with a big check and a deal with the PGA Tour to become the course equip-ment company for the Tournament Players Club chain of courses the Tour operates, the tournament under its various names had more bad dates than a high school sophomore.
But it was harder to kill off than Rasputin. Once, the tournament committee called a news conference at WQAD-TV in March of 1985 to announce the tournamentβs cancellation. That became less than must-see TV when, a half-hour before, the local chamber of commerce called and suggested state tourism money could be used to help finance that yearβs purse.
That helped keep things going. So did PGA Tour commissioner Deane Beman, who had given up a playing career to run the Tour. He had won the first two QCOs, the first when it was on the
fledgling second tour and offered a puny $25,000 purse, of which Beman collected $5,000. The sec-ond year, it was on the big circuit, and Beman won again, pocketing $20,000.
In 1972, that was decent money. Better yet, it was a confidence booster for a player who had game, but had never reached the heights as a pro as he did as an amateur.
Beman wanted to see the QCO succeed not just because he won, but because it was the only tournament willing to go head-to-head with the British Open. Where else could his Stateside play-
ers play? The Tour loaned the tournament the last $16,000 for the 1985 purse.
βWe feel a greater responsibility than other sports to stick with an event you have and make it work,β Beman said a few years ago.
A chain of Hardeeβs fast-food restaurants had helped with the purse in the early years. They dropped out, but somehow, Ed McMahon, Johnny Carsonβs announcer and foil, was convinced by the Jaycees to put his name on the tournament. In turn, he brought Hollywood notables such as Jerry Lewis to Oakwood Country Club in Coal Valley to

But one other thing happened, beyond McMahon coming and going, Miller Brewing coming and going, and then Hardeeβs, the front office, arriving for a nine-year sponsorship. Thanks to a series of exciting finishes and the realization that if it disap-peared, it would never come back, the tournament caught on with the golf lovers of Davenport, Bettendorf, Mo-line, Rock Island, and outposts from Burlington, Iowa to Rockford.
It became the golf equivalent of a county fair or family picnic. There might not have been a Tilt-A-Whirl or a greased pig catching contest, but there was a sense of community among the birdies and bogeys.
It may be the only tournament in golf where fans arrive wearing over-alls and nobody bats an eye.
Thus, when Hardeeβs left after the 1994 tournament, it hung on, even though the purse was now a cool mil-lion and going up.
And up, and up. But on April 2, 1997, everything changed.
Deere & Co. signed on as the title sponsor, the backing beginning in 1998 and with the new name β the John Deere Classic β affixed begin-ning in 1999, the year everyone expected to be at TPC Deere Run. Instead, because of grow-in trouble, one more year was spent at Oak-
wood. Deere Run, along the Rock River on some Deere-held property in Silvis, debuted in 2000, and the new era really began.
It is that era, with the Birdies of Charity operation helping more than 470 local charities to the tune of $62 million, and more than $6 million each of the last three years, with network television β first TBS, then ABC, and in recent years CBS β and with a succession of stellar tourna-ments, that has made the John Deere Classic the Green Bay Packers of the PGA Tour. This is the big deal in the little cities along the Mississippi.
Call Brian Harman, who won last year, impressed with the passion of the community.
βItβs an honor to be a champion of a tournament like that, to feel the support,β Harman said on a pre-tour-nament visit to Deere Run. βI canβt even imagine not wanting to come back to this tournament.β
Spieth feels the same way, which surprised some who felt he should hie himself over to St. Andrews directly from Chambers Bay to prepare for the third leg of the Grand Slam.
Perhaps he would have if not for the charter to and from the British Open that tournament director Clair Peterson arranged beginning in 2008. That may be the best money any tournament director has even spent.
This year, the road to the Grand Slam runs through Deere Run.

The buzz on bees and golfLuke Cella
H oneybees have been in the news the past couple of years and rightfully because honeybees play an important role as pollinators in our food supply
chain. It is common for honeybee colonies to de-cline some years, but over the past several years, beekeepers have recorded greater losses than normal. The general term used to describe this loss is colony collapse disorder (CCD). Though science has not indicated one specific cause of CCD, the use of pesticides, particularly one class, is commonly mentioned as a possible contributing factor. Researchers are trying to find answers and protect this important insect.
The class that is under scrutiny is the neonic-otinoids, a group of newer insecticides that are widely used in agriculture as a seed coating. The green industry, including golf, has used this class of chemistry for several years to treat turf-feeding insects and as a protectant against wood boring insects, including the emerald ash borer. The EPA is currently re-evaluating the safety of these prod-ucts to provide best practice guidelines to limit any potentially negative side affects. Some local superintendents are taking a more active stance.
Several superintendents have been keeping bees to show the diverse habitats found on golf courses can support and help solve the decline in honeybee populations by providing them a safe environment and home. Too often golf courses are seen as sterile environments void of any wildlife, especially from the perspective on the non-golfing
community. In an effort to raise awareness, Scott Witte, Certified Golf Course Superintendent of Cantigny Golf, has been sharing his experience with golf and bees. Witte has been keeping bees at Cantigny for the past 14 years and has coined the term βThe Cantigny Golf Bee Barometer.β Since honeybees are so intimately connected to their ecosystem they can provide a great measure or barometer of the condition of their environment.
βI hope to break down barriers by urging golf property managers and golfers to think different-ly and open their minds to the beauty and value of nature in its wild state,β Witte said. He uses the powerful allure of the honeybee to showcase his golf course as a healthy habitat for honeybees and other pollinators.
Witte was encouraged when a friend played Cantigny and saw the potential to keep bees with-

βIβm able to connect people who are enthu-siastic with beekeeping and show them that golf courses can be safe havens for bees,β he said.
Once considered βno fly zones,β Witte has proven to fellow apiarists that golf courses can provide much needed habitat for bees. Witte involves the local community drawing on volun-teers each honey harvest season. He continues to help elevate golf by sharing his experience and knowledge by educating fellow golf course super-intendents who have an interest in beekeeping.
The buzz has caught on with other area golf courses, including Skokie Country Club, where superintendent Don Cross recently tweeted theyβve captured four swarms this month alone and brings their hive count on the property up to nine. The courses and clubs are also sharing their honey to keep their bees and fund other projects.
The proshop at Cantigy sells out of Witteβs honey each year. Beeswax candles can be pur-chased in the parkβs gift shop and LipBeeStick, a lip balm made from the harvested wax and other natural ingredients is tough for Witte and his team to keep in stock.
As the EPA and other agencies look more closely into the use of specific pesticides and their impact on the bee population, most still attribute the decline of the honeybee to loss of habitat. Thankfully, golf courses are proving to be a good home for this beneficial insect.

Around IllinoisLast Encompass dance?
By Tim Croninβββββ
Say this for the Encompass Championship if this monthβs edition, as expected, proves to be the last of the three: It was good while it lasted.
The Champions Tour tournament brought world-class players to a world-class course, that be-ing North Shore Country Club in Glenview, begin-ning two years ago.
Craig Stadler ended a long winless streak to col-lect the 2013 title, and Tom Lehman came through to win last year. He defends in the 54-hole test be-ginning Fri., July 10.
Two major champions succeeding on a course
that has hosted majors β notably the 1933 U.S. Open and the 1983 U.S. Amateur β in the past.
The decision by Encompass to not renew its sponsorship deal, the need for a new site with the three-year pact with North Shore finishing, and the initiation of a new 50-and-up tournament in Madi-son, Wis., beginning next year, sponsored by Amer-ican Family Insurance on the original Encompass dates β the week after the U.S. Open β leads to the inescapable conclusion that this is the last dance for the senior set at North Shore.
That means if you want to see Lehman or Stadler or Fred Couples, who said July 4 that his back is well enough to give it a go, or anyone else in
Tim Cronin / Illinois Golfer
Classic finish The 18th hole at North Shore will play as the ninth during the Encompass so more fans can watch.
Champions Tour weekend needs sponsor, course and open date
left the IPGA for a similar post with the Southwest PGA in Scottsdale, Ariz., in May.
β(T)he relationships and experiences that have come out of working with those that so avidly sup-port the IJGA, its programs and its mission have been a gift,β Williams said in a July 2 letter an-nouncing the move.
Jordan Abdel-Haq has been named interim ex-ecutive director of the IJGA.
Khamborn captures Womenβs Western AmItβs fair to say that Chakansim βFaiβ Kham-
born is aces with the Womenβs Western Golf As-sociation.
With her aunt caddieing, Kahmborn scored a hole-in-one during the second round of stroke play qualifying. Then the 15-year-old went on to win the 115th Womenβs Western Amateur, played at Nashville Golf and Athletic Club in Brent-wood, Tenn.
She beat Florida State senior Lydia Gumm, 1 up, in the 36-hole final.
Kahmborn won the Womenβs Western Junior at age 12 three years ago, but didnβt have to face the level of competition in that affair that she did in the Am. In order, she knocked off a collection of collegians: Alabamaβs Cammie Gray, Arkan-sasβ Shawn Rennegarbe, Wake Forestβs Allison Emrey, Southern Californiaβs Ashley Holder and Louisville-bound Lauren Hartledge. That semi-final battle went 19 holes before Kahmborn tri-umphed. Scoring on page 26.
Kang takes storm-shortened Decatur-ForsythA win is a win is a win, even when tour of-
ficials deem it unofficial.Tell that to Jimin Kang, whose opening round
of 8-under-par 64 at Hickory Point Golf Course in Forsyth turned out to be all the golf she needed to capture the Decatur-Forsyth Classic when a con-
the senior golf set, it would be worth hustling over to North Shore for the Encompass. For most in the Chicago area, itβs a lot closer than Madison.
Couples finished second to Stadler in 2013, but his often wonky back kept him home last year.
βWe are certainly glad Fred has decided to compete in the tournament this year and very happy for the fans who will be attending the Encompass Championship,β tournament director Mike Galeski said.
βHe enhances the atmosphere of any tourna-ment he plays and adds another element to what already is an exciting and competitive field.β
For his part, Lehman would love to see the En-compass stay at North Shore with a new sponsor.
βItβs a special golf course,β Lehman said. βTournaments on great golf courses always seem to have that little something extra, that X factor that other places may not have. So when you win on a great course, a tournament on a venue which has so much tradition, it means a lot.
βThereβs a lot of history (in Chicago). Every-body who plays on the Champions Tour has played since they were probably 18 in some type of West-ern β Junior, Amateur or Open β so Chicagoβs been part of the calendar, part of the rotation of tourna-ments since I was 18. So coming back to Chicago, where youβve been coming for so long, it becomes part of what you look forward to.
βYou play in places that feel like home, and I think everyone has that feeling about the city.β
There are pro-ams on Wednesday and Thurs-day, while Friday and Saturday features celebrities playing in each pro group. Sunday is pros only, chasing the first place prize of $285,000 from the $1.9 million purse.
The winner may well end up a champion with no place to defend his championship in 2016.
66th Illinois Open set for two sitesSure as a summer heat wave, the Illinois Open
is set for July 20-22, but this year, thereβs a twist. The state championship will be played at two sites, Royal Melbourne in Long Grove and Hawthorn Woods Country Club in the town next door.
This allows for an expanded field of 258 com-pared to the standard 156, and thatβs expected to cre-ate a larger purse, based on more players attempting to qualify. This year, 437 attempted, compared to 349 last year, an increase of more than 20 percent, not including exempt players.
The final round will be at Royal Melbourne af-ter a cut to the low 70 and ties. Brad Hopfinger is on the Web-com Tour and not expected to defend his title.

tinuing series of downpours forced Symetra Tour officials to give up on resuming play.
The $16,500 first prize she won will spend nonethe-less.
βI wish we could have played 36 holes more, but unfortunately we couldnβt,β Kang said after the tourna-ment was called. βWe were all looking forward to play-ing more golf.β
Kang especially. A two-time winner on the LPGA circuit, sheβs still working her way back in from a debilitat-ing allergy problem that im-periled her immune system. At one point, golf wasnβt the issue. Breathing was.
Kang won a Symetra tournament in North Caro-lina in May and is second on the money list, on track to regain her LPGA card at seasonβs end.
Second went to Maude-Aimee Leblanc, who scored 5-under 67.
Homer Glen wonβtreopen Woodbine
The continuing saga of Woodbine Golf Course in Homer Glen has taken anoth-er turn. Village officials said in late May they were plan-ning to reopen the course,
with the Ludwig family, from whom the village bought the course in 2013, running the operation through 2016.
Thatβs no longer the plan. Homer Glen mayor George Yukich and Jim Ludwig were unable to reach an agreement, and the village has once again decided to keep the course mown, but closed, The Daily Southtown reported June 25.
Ludwig was concerned with a provision the course would be closed when village engineers needed to access the land to work on a flood-ing problem from stormwater runoff to an adjacent neigh-borhood, the paper reported.
βThe golf course is a dead issue right now,β Yukich said.
Why Yukich hasnβt con-sidered bringing in another golf course management company is the $62,000 ques-tion. Thatβs the estimated an-nual cost to keep the course while plans are developed to turn it into a park and, even-tually, remodel the clubhouse into a village hall.

Tour GuideBy Tim Cronin
βββββPhil Kosin was a dreamer. He was also a doer. The combination is why thereβs an Illinois
Womenβs Open today.Kosin was, to put it mildly, incensed that three
women were invited to play in the Illinois Open at Royal Fox Country Club in 1992. He thought, and correctly, that Royal Fox owner Vince Solano was using the women, Renee Heiken, Nicole Jeray and Kelly Johnston, a trio of collegiate notables, for publicity. The Illinois PGA, having given Solano a handful of exemptions, welcomed the women into the field. None made the cut, though Heiken did in a return visit two years later.
Kosin and others talked about the potential of an Illinois Womenβs Open. Only he did something about it, starting the tournament in 1995. Diane Daugherty, the coach of Southern Illinoisβ wom-enβs team, won the inaugural at Odyssey Country Club in Tinley Park, and a tradition was born.
Eventually the tournament took up residence at Mistwood Golf Club in Romeoville, which was fortuitous, for after Kosinβs death in 2009, Mist-wood owner Jim McWethy decided to continue it, adding Kosinβs name to the title.
Thus, the 21st Phil Kosin Illinois Womenβs Open will tee off a three-day run on July 27.
Fittingly, Jeray has won it twice. And Sarah Johnston, the 2004 winner, was the younger sister of Kelly Johnston.

Illinois Womenβs Open beckons
The presence of 2014 winner Emily Collins in this yearβs affair is as yet undetermined. Collins is on the Symetra Tour, and, like Illinois Open 2014 winner Brad Hopfinger, who is taking to make a living on the Web-com Tour, she may find it im-possible to get away from a tour that could lead her to the big circuit.
Regardless, a field of about 100 is expected to test Mistwood, which has earned raves since the reimagination by architect Ray Hearn.
Collins romped last year, scoring 4-under-par 212 to win by nine strokes and collect the $5,000 first prize. It was her first win as a pro, coming shortly after she graduated from Oklahoma.
βI had won a couple other little things (as an am-ateur),β Collins said. βThis is definitely exciting.β
