Why did you choose New Zealand for study abroad? It’s always been a dream to go to New Zealand. Its landscape and wildlife is so unique that it made it to the top of my bucket list and I took the opportunity to go there when I got it.
What is your favorite memory of New Zealand? The first day of the bike tour I did over mid-semester break, we followed a river and saw some old sluicing fields; it was absolutely gorgeous and incredibly peaceful!
How did IFSA-Butler help enhance your experience?IFSA-Butler gave me both an immediate group of friends as well as a chance to get to see some aspects of New Zealand that I didn’t have to plan out myself.
What were you scared of before going abroad?I was traveling to the other side of the planet, that’s a big difference, but it’s exciting to get out of your comfort zone sometimes and explore.
What was your favorite IFSA-Butler event? The overnight trip on Doubtful Sound, the stars at night as well as waking up early. There are few things more peaceful than being out on a boat at 4 am.
What advice do you have for future New Zealand students?Make Kiwi friends, go play some rugby, dress nicely and you should be able to blend in fine. At the end of the day you will still be an American, just an accepted American.
Olga Eliseeva Case Western Reserve
Major: Materials Engineering and Economics
IFSA-Butler program: University of New South Wales
Why did you choose Australia for study abroad?I wanted a college that would allow me to continue studying in both of my majors as well as a place that I would never have a chance to visit again. Also I love koalas and it has been my lifelong dream to hold one. So Australia seemed like the perfect place since UNSW is rated one of the top schools in the world for Materials Engineering and Economics and there are koalas here.
What is your favorite memory of Australia? My favorite experience was watching Madame Butterfly performed on Sydney Harbour under the stars. It was an experience beyond compare with the opera house and bridge in the background and the work of a premier opera company in the forefront.
How did IFSA-Butler help enhance your experience?IFSA-Butler exposed us to a diversity of experiences that most of us would not have thought of before arriving in Sydney. They helped welcome us and took care of the little things that we didn’t think of before coming. It was a lovely welcome when things we forgot about were put in our rooms and set out for us without having to ask.
What were you scared of before going abroad?I was scared of the cultural differences that Australia would have verses the USA and Europe. I was afraid that I would not be able to contact my family or figure out classes. All of these fears seem silly when I look back.
What was your favorite IFSA-Butler activity? My favorite activity was the hike in the Blue Mountains, since it was outside the city we truly got to see the wonders Australia had to offer. The indigenous experience that went along with that opened up a world of interesting points of view and made the Australian lifestyle easier to understand.

cost. Having a U.S. university transcript will make your academic career smoother, because most U.S. universities treat the Butler University transcript as transfer credit.
6 . Do you organize cultural excursions and activities? Some study abroad programs advertise host university activities and events as their own. IFSA-Butler staff abroad organize special cultural events and excursions just for IFSA-Butler students. Of course, host university activities are also available to our students and are a bonus to the IFSA-Butler cultural experience.
7 . Are your excursions and activities included in the program fee? IFSA-Butler’s program fees include all of our great excursions and activities. With the exception of a few optional excursions, we never ask students to pay additional money for events.
8 . Do I have to arrange my own housing? IFSA-Butler’s program fees always include housing, and IFSA-Butler guarantees that each student has university housing or IFSA-Butler housing upon arrival abroad.
9 . Do your programs include medical insurance? All IFSA-Butler programs include comprehensive accident and illness insurance at no additional cost.
10. Will I have an on-site orientation? IFSA-Butler won’t leave you out in the cold. Each program begins with an orientation in the host country. Our resident directors and other on-site staff organize and conduct the orientations themselves.
When you’re in the process of choosing a study abroad provider, be sure to ask all the right questions!
1. What is the academic quality of your programs? IFSA-Butler’s affiliated universities are top ranked in Australia and New Zealand, and some are among the highest ranked universities in the world.
2. Are all your fees listed up front? IFSA-Butler doesn’t have any hidden charges. All of our fees, plus deposits and potential supplemental fees such as meal plan charges, are clearly outlined in our program fee pages on our website.
3. Do you have scholarships? IFSA-Butler has awarded millions of dollars in scholarships over the past five years.
4. Do you have full-time staff in each host country? Some study abroad programs just give busy professors extra money to provide an occasional event or to organize a brief orientation. IFSA-Butler has offices and employs full-time staff in each country where we have programs. Our staff provide everything from thorough orientations to academic guidance to
emergency assistance.
5. Will I receive a real university transcript? Every IFSA-Butler student receives a Butler University transcript with official grade and credit translations at no extra

Why did you choose Australia for study abroad?
In going abroad my main concern was finding adventure, and what better place to do so than the complete other side of the world? I wanted a place that was exciting, but not somewhere that I could easily get to.
What is your favorite memory of Australia?
By far my favorite memory was towards the end of my study abroad experience. I was on a trip to Cairns to see the Great Barrier Reef with one of my close friends from the trip. After an exciting day scuba diving, we sat near the water just talking for hours. It was the perfect end to an amazing semester, and I learned a lot about myself that night and the type of person I wanted to be and who my time abroad had shaped me into being.
How did IFSA-Butler help enhance your experience?
IFSA-Butler did a great job making me feel comfortable and providing me with opportunities I otherwise would not have had. I got to take a cruise on the Sydney Harbour, spend a weekend in the country, take part in the color run and so much more. My advisers were always there if I needed a parent away from home, someone to always turn to when I needed to talk. IFSA-Butler fostered the unforgettable memories I made abroad.
What was your favorite IFSA-Butler activity?
My favorite event was Country Life Weekend. It was not only an amazing opportunity to see different animals and catch a glimpse of what living on a farm is like, but it was also a great bonding experience with my friends. It was nice to have a host family and eat a home-cooked meal after three months of my horrible peanut butter and jellys. The country was beautiful and I have never seen a more amazing view of the stars than those few nights.
What advice do you have for future Australia students?
The main difference I found was that most people tend to measure the quality of life in happiness rather than in success and money. The best advice I could give is to simply give into that. Go surfing without a care in the world, scuba dive just because you can, and do what makes you happy. Take time to live in the moment and be happy and adventurous.

I hadn’t realized how much I had gotten lost in the hustle and bustle of the city, but a weekend away taught me that I needed to find ways to relax. All in all, Country Life had the perfect timing in the semester.–Michael Brown, Wake Forest University

Major: Food Science & Technology
IFSA-Butler program: University of Otago
Why did you choose New Zealand for study abroad?
I wanted to go somewhere that was not as populated and would be a place where I could go on adventures. I had a friend who went to New Zealand and loved it and told me I would love it there.
What is your favorite memory of New Zealand?
Learning Maori performance in class and taking a road trip through the North Island.
How did IFSA-Butler help enhance your experience?
IFSA-Butler brought us to places I probably wouldn’t have gone to on my own. I was also able to ask questions about Kiwi culture and slang without having to be too embarrassed about asking. Our IFSA-Butler Student Services Coordinator Josh was willing to teach us about rugby and cricket and other integral parts of NZ sports.
What was your favorite IFSA-Butler event?
The overnight in Doubtful Sound and going to a rugby game.
What were you scared of before going abroad?
I was scared of having flatmates that were very different than me and we would not get along. And not being able to meet others with the same interests as me.
What advice do you have for future New Zealand students?
Grades for classes are determined by a few assessments, usually an essay and exam, and not much homework or other points. The exams are harder than typical American tests so you need to study more for them.

It’s really scary going to another country, especially by yourself. IFSA-Butler is so awesome because it brings students together so you already go into school knowing a few faces (which is a lot more than I can say going into college in the U.S.!). Orientation was a great way to meet friends and get to the see the city. I’ve especially enjoyed all the activities put on over the course of the semester. I’m not sure I would have actually gotten to a rugby game or a harbour dinner cruise without your help.– Katie Perez, Butler University

In today’s competitive job market, every
bit of experience counts. Give your future
career a boost by combining study abroad
with an internship.
IFSA-Butler’s internship options allow you to gain practical work experience, strengthen your resume and get an insider’s look at your host country. Combining the academic opportunities of international study with an internship can make your semester or year abroad even more rewarding and may continue to benefit you long after your return home.
Internships are available for most semesters at participating universities in both Australia and New Zealand. Some programs offer placements for nearly every major, while others are focused on one to three areas. Internships are unpaid, but all carry academic credit.

POLITICS, PUBLIC POLIC Y
AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL UNIVERSIT YThe ANU internship allows students to experience the policy-making process at the national level. Canberra is not only the headquarters of Australia’s federal Parliament and public service, but it also is home to the most important national associations, nongovernment organizations and lobbying groups. Placement possibilities include the following:
PARLIAMENT HOUSE The Australian National Internships Program (ANIP) has an exclusive agreement that allows students to be placed within the Federal Parliament. Interns may be in the office of a senator or a member of the House of Representatives, in one of about 50 parliamentary committees or in a department responsible for the operation of Parliament. Subjects range from global politics and development to social and environmental policy to issues of governance.
THE AC T LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY This is the legislature for Canberra residents that exercises both state and local government functions for the Australian Capital Territory.
PUBLIC SER VICES ANIP provides opportunities for placement in either Australian Federal or Territory departments and agencies. Past student projects have focused on the environment, financial management, sports policy, public planning and issues surrounding Australia’s Aboriginal population.
NONGOVERNMENT ORGANIZATIONS ANIP offers several placements for interns interested in Canberra-based industry and community organizations. Foreign aid and development opportunities are available with organizations such as AusAID and Greening Australia. Industry placements are available with the Motor Trades Association of Australia, the Minerals Council, the National Farmers Federation or the Real Estate Institute.
Students completing an ANU internship enroll in the public sector internship course and one additional course. The internship combines six weeks of coursework on the legislative and policy-making process at the beginning of the semester with an eight- to 10-week, part-time placement (a minimum of two days per week).
The final grade for the internship is based on at least one presentation, one or more essays and a research report.

ELIGIBILIT YIFSA-Butler programs are open to any qualified undergraduate in good standing enrolled full time at an accredited college or university in the United States or Canada. Most of our affiliated universities abroad require that students have completed two full years of undergraduate study before the program begins.
Our affiliated colleges and universities abroad determine our admissions requirements. See the individual university profiles for GPA and other academic requirements.
We reserve the right to reject applicants on the basis of academic, disciplinary, conduct and other considerations.
APPLYINGAdmissions to IFSA-Butler programs are conducted on a rolling basis, which means that once your application is complete, we send it to the host university for an admissions decision. Some of our more popular and competitive programs fill well before the deadline. Apply early!
How to ApplyIFSA-Butler requires only one application. You may ask to be considered for more than one program on the same application. Download an application or apply online at www.ifsa-butler.org.
IFSA-Butler does not charge an application fee!

• An official transcript from your home college or university (and from any others you have attended) showing credits and grades for all college or university courses you have taken.
• A recommendation form completed by an instructor in your major discipline or the discipline in which you wish to concentrate abroad. Some programs require a second recommendation.
• One 2-inch by 2-inch full-face photo in color. Print your name on the back of the photo in case it is separated from your file. Universities abroad require a photo.
Additional materials required:
