has sentimental value, whether it is received as agift, found at a bargainstore or passed down fromgeneration to generation.

But for one Atlanticman, his collection is en-tirely handmade to pre-serve the architectural his-tory of United States agri-culture.

Wayne Kirchhoff, a life-long farmer, began con-structing replica farm-

houses, barns and smalltown buildings in April1985 when three of hisfriends wanted to host afarm toy show and askedif he had anything hecould contribute.

So Kirchhoff used his in-terest in woodworking todevelop a replica of thecentury farm his fathergrew up on. The model in-cluded the farmhouse, thebarn, the corncrib, agarage and the cattle shed.

When the show rolled

around in September,Kirchhoff presented thecarefully crafted displaythat paid homage to hisfamily’s agricultural back-ground.

Greg Lear of Spencerinstalled as new IPPA president

Pork producer Greg Lear, of Spencer, was installed as thenew president of the Iowa Pork Producers Association(IPPA).

Lear began his one-year term at the conclusion of theJanuary 22 IPPA annual meeting in Des Moines. Lear hasbeen on the IPPA board of directors since 2006 and servedas president-elect in 2012.

"We have a good, diverse group of people on the boardand we are losing some retiring members who will bemissed," Lear said. "Their years of experience will be dif-ficult to replace."

Lear takes the leadership role at a time of uncertainty forthe pork industry, especially as it relates to the currentpredominant sow housing system, and it concerns him.

"Our industry is under constant attack from differentdirections and our way of life is being threatened. We'regoing to take our industry back using the same tactics asour opponents: one consumer at a time," said Lear. "IPPAis a grassroots organization and we're the ones who needto tell our story the way it needs to be told."

The pork industry is opposed to new USDA rules gov-erning school lunches and is working to have ruleschanged to permit more pork and other protein to beserved to school children. Lear is passionate about mak-ing this happen.

"We have a major issue with the calorie count, but es-pecially the protein content of the new lunch rules. Agrowing mind and a growing body do not need to be short-ed protein, Lear said. "We need to get Washington, D.C.'sattention, or maybe Mrs. Obama's, in this case."

The use of antibiotics in livestock production is beingbrought into question and Lear added the truth needs tobe told on the antibiotic issue. At the state level, Lear laud-ed the recently launched Iowa Farm Animal Care program.

"This is going to be a wonderful service for people whohave questions or concerns,” he commented.

In addition to co-owning Spencer Ag Center, Lear ownsa separate wean-to-finish hog business in Clay County.

Bill Tentinger, a pork producer from Le Mars, was IPPApresident in 2012.

Tickets and logisticsAs I write this, my fami-

ly and I are preparing totake a heifer to the DenverStock show.

I’m not really sure if thebig kid or the even biggerkid (my husband) wantedto go there more, but none-theless, they’ll be makingthe trip west to the greatstate of Colorado with aheifer in tow behind them.

Since the fun experienceof driving to and from Ohiolast year, I really didn’twant to drive in a truck foran entire day -- throughNebraska -- to go to Den-ver. Since my son wasshowing I thought I shouldat least make an appear-ance. The airfares fromOmaha to Denver lookedpretty cheap, so I thought Icould just fly out on Thurs-day, see him show on Fri-day, then fly back on Sat-urday. This, of course, would leave the 10-year-old home with grandpar-ents.

Then my husband said it.You know, one of the thingsthat husbands shouldn’treally say without consult-ing with their wives.

He told the little kid thathe would be able to fly withme to Denver.

Great.

Don’t get me wrong. Ilove my child. But he does-n’t stop talking. Ever.

I really don’t know wherehe gets it from, because I’msuch a quiet reserved per-son.

(Pause for laughter herefrom my family andfriends.)

I’m hoping we make itthrough security, or that atleast they’re fast this timearound. The boy has beenpracticing “quiet” but themost he’s lasted so far hasbeen about 72 seconds. Se-curity might last a bitlonger than that.

So, now we’re up to twotickets, and one more day.Since all four of us wouldbe there, why not stay onemore day and come backSunday so we can see somethings. It made sense at thetime.

Then, since we all weregoing, and the airfare wasso cheap, my parents de-cided they wanted to go aswell. I say the more themerrier. I always loved vacationing with my grand-parents, and loved thememories. I’m happy tojump at any chance that mykids can have those sameexperiences.

Four tickets, flying out

Thursday and coming backSunday were purchased.

Then, life laughed at us.Maybe it was karma, ormaybe it was just sheardumb luck.

My son decided to partic-ipate in large group speechthis year as a freshman, and is in the one-act playgroup. This was not a prob-lem, since the contest waslast Saturday, the 19th. Itdidn’t interfere with any-thing.

Then, we found out thatthe home show for the pub-lic was on Sunday.

This Sunday. The day we were flying

and driving back from Den-ver. Changing tickets wasway beyond my capabili-ties, so I stopped into mytravel agent’s office.

She managed to switchthe return tickets for momand me from Sunday toSaturday, and switch thelittle kid’s ticket into the bigkid’s name flying back Sat-urday with us.

The little kid, my dad,and my husband will thendrive the heifer back onSunday.

Phew.Yes, I’m still confused by

all the logistics of it as well.My travel agent deserves a

trophy for the schedulingacrobatics she had to do tomake this happen!

(Always visit your localtravel agent when schedul-ing trips. They are trulymodern-day miracle work-ers!)

I know my mom, my sonand I will make it backalive. We’re all pretty laidback when it comes to trav-eling.

At this point, I’m not re-ally sure if all of the otherthree are going to make itback to Iowa alive.

Somehow, my husband’sattitude towards life hasmorphed into my father’sattitude. And the little guyhas consumed his grandfa-ther’s attitude as well. Iblame all the weeks in thesummer he gets to spendwith grandpa working thehot dog cart.

Nonetheless, all three ofthem will be stuck togetherin a truck, with a trailer, through Nebraska, in themiddle of winter.

I can’t be certain, but I’mnot entirely sure they are allgoing to make it back intothe truck when they stop toeat or stop for gas.

I’ll say a few prayers forthem, but my mom and Iwill be watching all of thegood performances by ourschool’s speech depart-ment.

And, just for fun, afterthat we’ll head over to ourchurch where the kids willbe performing their puppetshow.

Isn’t there some hon-orary degree I can get infamily logistics? If onedoesn’t exist I think wefarmer’s wives should gettogether and create one.

Or at least a free trip tosomeplace warm.

Without cattle.

BUILDING, from Page 1

“I said ‘That must have taken a lot of paint.’ He saidit took 200 gallons,” Kirchhoff explained.

“That one is my favorite but a lot of people’s favoriteone is over here,” he said as he pointed to a shelf with afew beat-up looking buildings on it.

The weathered look of the barn, corncrib and housewas intentional. Kirchhoff mentioned that he was told allof his buildings looked like they did when they were firstconstructed and his architecture was missing a commonelement that spots the cornfields of rural Iowa.

“Someone said, ‘you should make one that we seeevery day,’” Kirchhoff said, and that is what he did.

With the use of old barn boards with faded paint,Kirchhoff constructed a miniature barn bearing the lookof neglect. Its paint is faded, the roof sunken and thewindows hang on by a screw.

The slanted roof of the corncrib and the downtroddenappearance of the house display the scars of a commonIowa summer occurrence.

“These were hit by a tornado,” Kirchhoff said. Those particular buildings were not designed from a

model or pictures, just the inspiration from the crum-bling structures as common on Iowa highways as corn.

For his other creations, however, he receives picturesor takes a field trip to observe the buildings himself.

He viewed the giant red barn in person in Woodhall,Illinois – about 30 miles south of Moline. Stories of aneight-sided corncrib brought him to Wilcox, Missouri.Kirchhoff estimated that he has visited about half of hiscreations.

Kirchhoff also has a personal connection to some of hiscreations. A model of the country school he attended ingrade school sits on the floor. Amid a collection of multi-sided barns stands a miniature monolith; a replica of hisold high school in Lewis he constructed for his 50th highschool class reunion.

The building is complete with metal plates above thetwo doors that read “Lewis School”.

The bricks are appropriately textured. Kirchhoff ex-plained that he began with the base paint as the color ofthe mortar and rolled the brick sheets onto the buildingand added a texture layer that he then sealed withpolyurethane to stick to the walls.

Believably so, when Kirchhoff unveiled his creation atthe reunion, his classmates were stunned.

“They could not believe it,” he said.He not only travels to visit the buildings, but also re-

locates his models around the country at toy shows, mu-seums and any other location looking for a throwbacksplash of history.

One tour with his nephew’s seed company brought himand his exhibits to Redwood Falls, Minnesota, Mitchell,South Dakota and the South Dakota State Fair in Huron.Following the tour, he traveled to Spencer to exhibit hiscreations at the Clay County Fair and then ventured toGrand Island, Nebraska, for the Husker Harvest Days forfour days. His journey ended at the Farm Progress Showin Amana. In all, Kirchhoff was gone for 24 straight days. He’s proudly displayed his work at Fremont, Nebraska,South Sioux City, throughout Kansas and in Des Moines.

“I’ve been to toy shows all over,” he said. He was also selected to attend the National Farm Toy

Show in Dyersville where he displayed a different sort of

model. This time, Kirchhoff proudly displayed his repli-ca tractors, also hand carved in his shop.

Over three days in Dyersville, 16,000 people passedKirchhoff’s tractors. And each day, Kirchhoff heard thestories of farmers and arguments as to why or why notthe big brothers of his creations were actually fit for field-work.

“It was fun just hearing the stories from all the farm-ers that stopped by,’ he said.

Although woodworking has led him to create cabinets, toy tractors and various carvings, his true passion re-mains small-scale architecture, particularly barns.

“I would sooner do a barn than a house,” Kirchhoff ex-plained. “I see something I want to do and I do it.”

Not once in his 27 years of constructing replicas hashe considered accepting money for his creations. Al-though the glue, nails, wood and paint cost him a healthysum of money, he continues to make his buildings strict-ly to preserve the life of rural America’s past.

“I’ve never considered selling my buildings. I had achance to but my nieces and nephews said ‘No! Don’t sellthem,’” said Kirchhoff.

He was commissioned to create just one structure; theManning Hausbarn, which was returned to him eventu-ally.

The shelves and floors in the front room of his shop arepacked with his finished creations. Most finished workshave the name of the building, the date the original struc-ture was erected, its location and the date Kirchhoff put

the finishing touches on the scale model. He does not consider his shop to be a museum but the

dedication to his craft has drawn attention from themedia and public. Television stations, newspapers andtour buses have made the trip down the dirt road southof Atlantic to see the buildings.

“I have people stop quite often,” Kirchhoff said. He added that one day in the near future, he plans to

have a museum in Griswold for his work.Kirchhoff mentioned he had no formal training in

woodworking but years of cutting and gluing havehelped sharpen his skills. He does not look at a new orunusual style as a task but more as a challenge.

“My woodworking was self taught but shop class wasa favorite of mine in high school,” he stated. “I like to seehow close I can get it to look like the real thing.”

His attempt to perfect the craft has led to a close rela-tionship with his saws and workman’s bench. Wood-working provides solace and an opportunity to displayhis talents.

“This gives me something to show what I’ve done withmy time. I’m not married, I don’t go to bars and I can’tgolf,” Kirchhoff said. “I spend a lot of time down here. Icome here to work and to get my mind off of stuff.”

While he enjoys escaping from the stress of the realworld on occasion, he jumps at the opportunity to showhis work and talk to people. He expressed that his shopis open for tours upon request.

“All you have to do is ask,” he said.

The tattered farmstead stands alone on its own shelf. The barn, corncrib and house show the effects of years of Iowaweather and neglect. Kirchhoff designed the buildings to resemble the familiar sight of rural Iowa. Photo by Greg Forbes

Online tool offers cover croppossibilities for Iowa growers

Iowa farmers are encouraged to check out a new on-line tool that will help them select the right cover crop fortheir operations.

The Cover Crop Decision Tool was developed by theMidwest Cover Crops Council to help farmers select covercrop species based on their main crops, available plant-ing windows and what they needed from the cover cropsuch as stopping erosion, livestock forage or to controlweeds. Last year, for example, farmers throughout theMidwest were urged to plant fall cover crops as a way tokeep nitrogen in the soil that was not used by crops dur-ing the drought-stressed growing season.

New data updates the Cover Crop Decision Tool so thatit can be used for Iowa crops and conditions.

“This tool should be a big help for farmers planning, considering or just thinking about how and where they

might use cover crops,” said Tom Kaspar, USDA plantphysiologist involved with the Iowa Cover Crops Work-ing Group that helped develop the tool. “The plantingwindow for each species is adjusted for each county inall participating states, a unique aspect of this resource.”

Kaspar said the tool is specific to region, soil drainageclass and includes information about a variety of covercrop species: non-legumes such as oats, buckwheat, bar-ley, triticale and winter wheat; brassicas such as radish, oilseed and turnip; legumes including alfalfa, red cloverand cowpeas; and five mixes. The tool suggests covercrop species and potential planting date windows thatusually provide good establishment and growth, basedon 30-year average frost dates in the user’s county.

To find the Cover Crop Decision Tool, go towww.mccc.msu.edu/selectorINTRO.html.

21 soybean farmers on ISAFarm and FoodAmbassador team

Twenty-one Iowa soybean farmers have stepped for-ward as volunteer spokespeople on the Iowa SoybeanAssociation’s (ISA’s) Farm and Food Ambassador team.

The goal of the program is to empower ISA membersto share messages and issues that are important to theirorganization and farming.

This year’s ambassadors are Roger Wuthrich, Bloom-field; Roger Van Ersvelde, Brooklyn; Jim Fitkin, CedarFalls; Kyle Maas, Duncombe; Justin and JenniferDammann, Essex; Dan Roeder and Jolene Riessen, IdaGrove; Tom Wall, Iowa City; David Ausberger, Jefferson;Adam Schmidt, Kanawha; Lindsay Greiner, Keota; An-drew Yoder, Leon; Barry Christensen, Lime Springs; TimCouser, Nevada; Pat Swanson, Ottumwa; Julianne John-ston, Parkersburg; Tom Vincent, Perry; Randy Souder,Rockwell City; Chuck White, Spencer; and John Askew,.

Ambassadors share their message in many ways, in-cluding hosting farm tours, submitting letters to the ed-itor and visiting with consumers at the Iowa State Fairand Iowa Games events.

In addition to talking to consumers, the ambassadorteam also communicates with state legislators and in-dustry leaders.

“Most people are two generations or more removedfrom the farm, and this holds true at the statehouse,”said Jolene Riessen of Ida Grove.

“I feel that it’s my job as an Iowa farmer to visit withlegislators and help them understand the impact of thelegislation they write on my farming operation. I believethese folks need to understand the importance of agri-culture to Iowa’s economy,” she added.

Farmers National Companyprojects short supply, highervalues in 2013 for farm land

Economic uncertainty had some non-operating farm-land owners rushing to sell, which was evident in the lastthree months of the 2012, according to Farmers Nation-al Company, the largest farmland and ranchland real es-tate company in the country.

Overall for 2012, Farmers National Company reportedthat sales activity was up 40 percent compared 2011.

“We anticipated another record year in 2012, but whatwe’ve seen has exceeded our expectations,” said Der-rick Volchoff, ALC, vice president of real estate opera-tions at Farmers National Company.

The company said projected changes in tax lawsprompted many landowners who were planning to sell inthe next two years to act before new rules took effect. The high level of activity is likely to lead to a short sup-ply of available land in 2013, which could drive valueseven higher, according to Volchoff.

“Pure economics should dictate that values rise if thesupply of available land tightens,” he stated.

The fact that values have stayed strong over the pastfew years has prompted landowners to sell while themarket remains positive. Several market forces such aseconomic uncertainty in Europe and China, as well asthe widespread drought, have not negatively impactedland values to date.

Buyers in the current market are farmers looking to ex-pand their operations, said Volchoff. Non-operating landowners are driving activity, as many sellers are lookingto sell inherited or transferred land.

High profitability from strong commodity prices in re-cent years has put many farmers in a strong cash posi-tion, reducing purchase risk as debt ratios have beenheld down. Very few investors are looking to sell at this

point. “Buyers feel they will still get returns on land well into

2013 as projections for continued profitability arestrong,” said Volchoff. “Farm operators feel very com-fortable in their situations. They have significant cashand are investing it in their operations buying land andequipment.”

The future of the market, while unforeseen, is notrisky, according to Volchoff. “The farm land market hasnot been highly leveraged, as residential housing mar-kets were when prices skyrocketed. This is not a specu-lative market and we do not foresee any type of abruptdownturn. People still see land as a safe, tangible in-vestment and are willing to keep their money there overthe long term.”

Demand for quality land continues to be very strong inthe North Central Region including Iowa, Missouri, Min-nesota and South Dakota, according to Sam Kain, areasales manager for Farmers National Company in Iowaand Minnesota. Auction numbers in the region were upin 2012, prompting sellers to net top sales prices.

“Farmers National Company completed more than 175auctions in this region during 2012, which is up 35 per-cent over the prior year,” said Kain. “Demand is still out-pacing the number of properties available, and quality isdefinitely king.”

Despite higher cash rents and input costs narrowingfarmer profits, the majority of buyers in the North Cen-tral Region continue to be farmers.

In Iowa, top quality land is selling at more than$12,500 per acre, Minnesota values are reaching $9,500per acre, and values in eastern South Dakota havereached $8,000 plus in many areas.

Unusual crop provides tastybenefits to livestock, farmers

by Greg ForbesThroughout the Midwest, unusual plants have been uti-

lized as cover crops. Small amounts of farmers have turned to turnips and

radishes as the winter cover. Mark Licht, a field agronomist with Iowa State Univer-

sity stationed in Nevada, said the crops provide an addedbonus to farmers with livestock.

“We see some people use tillage radishes or purple topturnips and intermix those with winter rye. The radishesand turnips provide a grazing value,” Licht said.

While winter rye and even fall oats dominates crop coverplanting due to a lower price tag, Licht said farmers withlivestock would save money in feed costs by planting

turnips and radishes. “They (radishes and turnips) are being used the most

in grazing. In a round about way, farmers plant them formonetary value,” he stated. “They (farmers) get a returnon the cost from the feed value they are gaining.”

Cattle prefer the large, nutrient-laden fruit compared toregular feed. Therefore, farmers can accumulate a surplusof hay in current less-than-ideal conditions.

“I encourage planting turnips for livestock, especially ifwe had a situation like last summer where we were lowon hay and forage,” Licht said. “It helps farmers stretchtheir hay crop out longer, helps them make sure they keeptheir livestock fed and keeps feed costs down.”

Licht said he believes more turnip acres have been plant-

ed in nearby states such as Illinois and Michigan than inIowa. Turnip acres continue to be scarce due to the priceof feed as well as the ecological benefits. Winter rye pro-vides more of a soil benefit to farmers.

“Farmers get better soil conservation and water qualitybenefits from winter rye,” Licht stated.

“From a soil standpoint, growers aren’t going to getmuch help from turnips.”

In fact, Licht said he has seen an increase in winter ryeplanting in the last few years for a number of reasons.

He commented, “Is it attributed to the high profile ofsoil and water quality issues or the state of the agricultureindustry? I can’t say attribute it to one cause but a com-bination of issues has lead to an increased adoption rate.”
