General Context

• The purpose of the IFP is to

examine, research and study emergent

forms of urbanism in African cities.

• Particular, but not exclusive, attention

will be given to the question of slums

and urban poverty.

Internships: Two Types

• Community-based work with Slum Dwellers International (SDI), mostly in southern Africa.

• Others will be involved in other activities, largely in Uganda.

• SDI currently has 34 country affiliates all over the world. These internships will focus on some of their African affiliates

• South Africa will be the hub:

– Students will have an orientation week in Cape Town and then will be placed in several countries across the south of the continent: Namibia, Malawi, Swaziland, Botswana, and Uganda.

Not Just Slum Dwellers

Other Aspects of Urban Poverty

• Students previously have interned with:

– Ministry of Land, Housing and Urban Development

– The World Bank

– Women’s Health Issues, Clean Development Mechanisms, an Orphanage.

– We can help arrange link ups with other organizations depending on the specific interests of students. Ideas welcome.

Kawama Housing Project

Beneficiary analysis (for grant

applications and affordability

assessment).

Supportive partnerships research (i.e.

Civil engineering interns, technical

support, truck usage etc).

Research income generating

opportunities.

Communications outreach to raise the

profile of Slum Dwellers projects.

Kisenyi

Redevelopment

Conduct a feasibility

study on the proposed

Kisenyi land-sharing

pilot project in

Kampala for

ACTogether and SDI.

The proposal involves

the land being shared

by the slum dweller

federation, a private

developer, and a

private land owner.

HEALTH RESEARCH

Work with community groups to

identify needs in a particular

settlement.

Work closely with federation H&H

committees and utilize data

collected during enumerations.

Review project proposals submitted

by H&H and assist with new

proposals.

Document the effort in

articles, blogs etc.

Interview H&H committee members

for the creation of community

profiles.
