In office any administration worth its salt should be constantly introspecting whether it is really promoting the general welfare of the Korean War veterans membership Has camaraderie increased Have communications improved Are memorials in word and stone being constructed Has amity with the Korean-American community been furthered

If Department functions become another meaningless moving up through the chairS annual paniamentary procedure exercise then were just another in along line of stumbleshyfumble amp trip dance of retireds mouthing the current cliche of preference Been there done thatl You would think that we have long passed the Hey look at mg stage That curtain should have fallen when your kid homered or struck out in the fast Little League game

At the annual National Reunion we were told that Ed Daily keynote speaker of the 99 Mobile National Reunion has been expunged from the membership due to his specious testimony re No-guen-ri - when he was never there in addition to several other falsehoods concerning his military record Also it seems that a Joe Shearer ex-president of a Cleveland OH chapter positioned himself in President Coons entourage for the 50th anniversary doings in Seoul Tums out he was not the combat hero he portrayed himself as since he didnt pipeline into Korea till Oct 53 three months after the armistice Lord preserve the integrity of our and alf other associations from the scourge of WANNABEs past present and pluperfect

The first plank in this administrations platform was to prospect the funding shortfall in order to comp lete our State Memorial The achievement was due largely to the efforts of Charley Price our Director of Legislative Liaison Affairs The article Forgotten War Not a Forgotten Monumenf VETERANS POST August 2000 p 17 states that case

The national membership figure obtained at the Reunion from the records of Administrative Director Nancy Monson stands at 14750 effective 25 July 2000 Florida comes in w2062 as of 11 Aug 2000 a substantial 14 +

The membership was informed of the sound financial position the National now enjoys The root cause of our previous financial difficulties will now be redressed in Federal Court -see back page We boast of a $570000 00 combined checkingsavings account balance debt free To do this Annual dues were raised thirty three (33)

Fine time for some give-back reapporshytionment revenue-sharing fiscal federalism It would seem timely to focus on an equitable reallocation of those revenues back to the source - the Departments and Chapters therein TEAM FLORIDA At the NationalKo~ War Memonal Wash

August 21 2000

Dear Congressman David J Weldon

In this 50th Anniversary commemorative period of the Korean War I find it totally disrespectful to the more than 6 million men and women who served in that era to be denied a Federal Charter The Korean War Veterans Association Inc seeks only to be accorded the same honor bestowed upon all other major American war veterans organizations ie Veterans of Foreign Wars American Legion Vietnam Veterans of America etc

August 4 1999 the Senate voted 92-0 to grant the Charter in passing Bill S620 However HR 1671 IH assigned to the Immigration and Claims subcommittee under the House Judiciary Committee bas been ignored by Chairman Lamar Smith in refusing to waive the moratorium passed in 1989 against granting Federal Charters However there have been at least six waivers since that time granting charters to other veterans and civil service groups

Therefore we are seeking to right this injustice and request your help by stepping forward and serving as a co-sponsor for HR 1671 LH

Respectfully

EAST ST LOUIS

Ex-treasurer is accused of stealing

The former treasurer of the National Korean War Veterans Association was accused Thursday in US District Court in East St Louis of stealing $240000 from the organization

According to the charges John P Maison of Fairview Heights who also goes by the name of Paul J Markowitz 66 used his position with the organization to draw checks and use credit cards for his own use

The unauthorized use of those accounts constitutes mail fraud the charges said

Maison became treasurer of the association in 1994 and the abuse happened from then until 1997 officials say The charges also

accuse Maison of lying about his military service Court records state that he was discharged in other than honorable conditions in January 1953

Maison hid from other members of the executive board a financial

Maison resigned his position shortly after a preliminary audit in February 1997 by Fairview Heights accounshytant Stan Myrda Maison had told the accountant that a Check written for $5000 cash on Aug 8 1996 was used to pay a convention bill at the Adams Mark Hotel in St Louis

Respectfully

s Thomas W Gaffney President Department of Florida Korean War Veterans Association Inc

The former treasurer of the National Korean War Veterans Association was accused Thursday in US District Court in East St Louis of stealing $240000 from the organization

In a related item the Belleville News-Democrat also 25 Aug said Items purchased for his own use with Korean War Veterans Associa -tion ITedit cards and checks includshyed such things as audio visual equipment jewelry airline tickets magazine subscriptions and a pornographic videotape the indictment states

Maison hid from other members of the executive board a financial

report completed by a certified public accountant in October 1994 The report was critical of the organshyization giving one person control over all its finances according to the indictment
