© St Peter’s Catholic College Material in this Newsletter cannot be reproduced without permission from the Principal Dear Parents, Students, Staff and Friends of the College On Monday of next week, we are holding a special assembly at the school to induct our new College Student Leaders. These students were introduced to you in the previous newsletter and they will take over from our current Year 12 student leaders who are finishing their roles in order to prepare for their Higher School Certificate Examinations. I see student leadership as an integral part of school life and this year we are re-developing the student leadership program within the school in order to teach and develop leadership skills to all interested students, not just those in elected positions. For me, leadership is about motivating and influencing people to work towards common goals. Leaders get people moving and inject energy into the process of change and growth. At school, student leaders are essential in facilitating good communication between the student body and school leadership. Student voice is important in the school as students provide a unique perspective on all areas of school life, especially in the area of teaching and learning. Student leadership allows students to engage in school-wide discussion, put forward their point of view and feel they have a degree of ownership in their school. The new student leadership team have started some training and discussion in areas such as creating and sharing vision for the future, aligning initiatives to a mission statement, fostering the collaboration of others in pursuit of goals and the importance of modelling good behaviours and practices. This will continue throughout the rest of this year in the hope that these student leaders can start to share their knowledge with younger students. Leadership skills are becoming more and more important in many fields and work places and I am very pleased that, at St Peter’s, we are investigating new practices to allow all our students to develop these skills in preparation for life beyond school. I am looking forward to the induction on Monday and I wish to thank all of the outgoing leaders for their contributions to the College this year. I have every confidence that our new student leaders will be great contributors to the life and mission of St Peter’s over the next year. Message from the Diocese of Broken Bay

SCAM EMAILS After an incident at a school in another State where scammers posed as the school and sent out an email to parents asking for their credit card details we would like to offer the following advice:

• Be alert to any emails purportedly from our school that request any personal

information or payments from you. Indeed do not trust any email from any sender if you do not know why you are receiving it

• The school would not request your credit card details by email

• Never provide passwords of sensitive or financial information in response to an email

request

• Our preferred method of payment is BPAY. Many financial institutions enable BPAY from your credit card. However if this is not an option for you, the safest alternative is to present to the school office with your credit card, or alternatively telephone the school to pay over the phone

• Check the destination of the email address and ensure it is trusted and known to you

before you reply

• Do not reply to any suspicious emails from the school, its service providers or other third parties

• Do not click on any links in emails of this kind

• Please report any suspicious emails to the school immediately

The Year 11 Fortnightly Report: Term 3 Weeks 7 - 8

Welcome to the last two ‘formal’ weeks of Term 3 for Year 11 students before they embark on their end of preliminary examinations in Week 9 and 10. I must say there has never been such organisation and time management skills on show as I saw last fortnight with the names, nicknames and sizing for the senior jackets completed for each of the 170 students in the year group. Who would have known adolescents could follow a deadline if they liked the outcome at the end; there you go my PhD question about student self-regulation has been answered.

WHAT’S BEEN HAPPENING?

SENIOR JACKETS 2018

As mentioned I have received all the data required for the jackets to be ordered by Week 10. If I could take this opportunity to remind you that full payment is due by 15th September (end of Week 9). There are two options for payments: 1 x $100 or 2 x $50 payments. If payment is a concern could you please contact me to have a chat. All Year 12 students in the past have had a senior jacket and I would hate for a student to miss out.

BROKEN BAY ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIPS

On Wednesday 16th August Emily Tweedie and Tyson Vanderwolf represented St Peter’s at Sydney Olympic Park. Emily competed very well however was beaten on the day. Tyson won his event and has progressed through the NSW Combined Catholic Colleges competition along with four other St Peter’s students in other year groups. We wish you all the best Tyson and congratulations

DANCING WITH THE STARS OF THE HSC

Annalise Clark and Emily Page have been able to resume a normal breathing rate now that the HSC Practical Dance Examinations have been completed. The two dancers were selected by the Year 12 dance students to perform their compositions which is a great honour and also a significant amount of additional hours that they have to find in their weeks to learn and perfect the dance with the Year 12s; not to mention whilst still completing their own Year 11 assessment tasks. It was wonderful to see the girls perform at the HSC Dance Night 27th July and I am sure Emily will be mortified that I captured this “mermaid” pose.

CHILL OUT CAFÉ The Year 11 student leaders have launched one of their many initiatives “Friday Chill Out Café” on Friday Week 5. The Chill Out Café showcases the amazing talents of some of the musical students in the school. Last Friday Lucy Parle sung and played the guitar to a room full of students and teachers enjoying hot dogs, ice-cream, hot chips and milkshakes. A great success and look forward to the Week 7 Café. STUDENT LEADERSHIP PORTFOLIOS

We have been tracking the nomination, voting, selection and role allocation of the new student leadership team with excitement. Next Monday the College will come together to induct the 2017-2018 Student Leadership Team. Last fortnight I acknowledged the College Captains and Vice-Captains that will lead the team and this fortnight I would like to acknowledge and congratulate the Student Leadership Portfolios. Being a year of change and focusing on how we can make changes that reflect a learning environment that is relatable, the student leaders, during camp, decided to make some changes to the Portfolio system to incorporate ‘Student Health and Wellbeing Portfolio and the Learning Portfolio’.

House Captains

The elected House Captains are really passionate about moving the ‘sport’ focus from these roles and making the House system embedded into our College Culture and celebrate all forms of student achievement.

Woman’s Catholic League Breakfast

Thursday morning the 17th August I was lucky enough to attend the Women’s Catholic League Scholarship Breakfast alongside Kristen Potter the St Peter’s scholarship recipient for 2017 as well as her lovely mother Caroline. We were also with the Principals and family of the Year 11 recipients from St Edward’s, St Joseph’s and Mackillop Colleges. The women of the league put on a wonderful morning tea with all the delicious food supplied by Lorraine, a member for almost 40 years! This scholarship often falls under the radar but we appreciate the support of this organisation enormously and the hard work they do in our community to better the outcomes of young Catholic women.

COMING UP Wellbeing for Learning: Day 3 Period 4 PREPARING FOR THE EXAMINATION PERIOD

It is no secret that students listen when a message is delivered by their peers so what better time to get the student leaders involved than exam time! We are going to talk about how to study, what good study versus bad study looks like, Luke and Erin are going to speak about stress and strategies to manage feelings of being overwhelmed or anxious, as well as focusing on good health during this time.

Stage 5 SURVEYS The past week has been a particularly busy one for both Year 9 and Year 10 students. Both Year groups have completed an online survey regarding student wellbeing, as well as voting for the leaders who will represent the year groups for the next twelve months. COLLEGE ASSEMBLY Year 9 returned safety from Camp and by all accounts every Camp was a great success. At our College Assembly last week several students presented a report on each camp.

Congratulations to Nia Durick, Lauren Aquilina, Jessica Gatt and Hayley Mostran for their presentations. Michayla McDougall also performed beautifully, singing the song titled “Finally”. What a great talent! To introduce “Fair Trade Week” a dramatic piece was designed and performed by the following students – Laura Cooper, Kara Woodley, Jemma Matthews, Mackenzie Weeks, Jordon Ison, Ella Chidgey. Lachlan Tolhurst, James Kampas and Angela Read. GOLD AWARDS Congratulations to the following Year 10 students were gained Gold Awards for Outstanding Achievement – Jaimie-Lee Andrews, Klair Brady-Roberts, Tallis Burke, Isabella Byrnes, and Eliza O’Donnell. I encourage all students to be focused in class, to submit assessment tasks that have been thoroughly prepared and always strive to challenge themselves to “do their best”. This will lead to increased personal satisfaction, confidence and enhanced academic results. Sharon Rochford – Stage 5 Co-ordinator L O T E Language News – It’s not too late to make a difference in your future. With subject selections happening for Year 8 this week, it is a perfect opportunity to remind you that learning a language is not only fun and enjoyable but has far reaching influences for students’ futures. Students have the choice of doing French or Japanese in Year 9 and 10. Have a look at these famous celebrities who speak numerous languages… http://www.ranker.com/list/the-16-most-surprisingly-bilingual-celebrities/calistylie?var=2&utm_expid=16418821-39.C1Ff7mmuRWu97rdjNbg0dg.1&utm_referrer=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ranker.com%2Flist%2Fthe-16-most-surprisingly-bilingual-celebrities%2Fcalistylie%3Fvar%3D2 Talking about Australians, the Director of the Asia Education Foundation (AEF), Kathe Kirby, says: “Unlike most people in the world who are connected to other countries through close land borders and so on, we’re not, and we haven’t valued having a second language,” she goes on to say: “It’s just normal for most young people around the world to exit schooling with two or more languages but in Australia, we’ve got fewer than 13 per cent of our Year 12 students studying a language.” (2016)

Let’s get ahead of the 87% of Australian students and learn a language. This is a great article about 25 reasons to learn foreign languages: http://cla.auburn.edu/forlang/resources/twenty-five-reasons/ and some of the most outstanding reasons are that it links so successfully to other subjects. For example:

• English - The study of a foreign tongue improves the knowledge of one’s own language • Mathematics and Science - Analytical skills improve problem solving, dealing with abstract concepts, are

increased • Religion - teaches and encourages respect for other peoples: it fosters an understanding of the interrelation of

language and human nature; expand one’s world view and limit the barriers between people • Technology –Technology IS language – coding IS language • PDHPE – international sporting events bring the cultures of the world together • Art, music, Textiles, TAS - Creativity is increased; International music industry, Paris Fashion Week • History/Geography - leads to an appreciation of cultural diversity; expand one’s view of the world, liberalise

one’s experiences, and make one more flexible and tolerant Mrs Flint and I are both available to answer any questions relating to Language learning. Best wishes to you all, and take care of your spirits きをつけてください。(Ki o tsukete kudasai) Jenni Dowdell - Teacher in Charge of Languages

Environment Portfolio Recount: Upon being elected, as the Environment Portfolio Captains for 2016/2017 both Mel Andrews and I, Ben Grubba, were very enthusiastic to make a lasting impact in raising awareness and reducing our school’s impact on the environment. Together we embraced the motto “Think globally, act locally”, implementing this vision into all our initiatives including: Clean Up Australia Day, Earth Hour, Tree Planting, Take 3 for the Sea and in the planning of Solar Panels for the College. Our first major event was Clean up Australia Day inspiring our school community to clean up, fix up and conserve our environment by organising students to pick up litter in their playground area. The next event on the calendar was Earth Hour, where we turned off all non-essential electrical appliances as a small but powerful gesture. To send a message to governments around the world that as a school community we are committed to change the future of our planet. Despite the ongoing construction around the school we continued the annual tradition of tree planting on Saint Peter’s Day. We encouraged students to come and join us in planting trees around the school to demonstrate our support and active care for our unique natural environment. We also held the Take 3 for the Sea competition offering students the opportunity to win prizes by posting photos of themselves picking up three pieces of rubbish. This raised awareness to the immense amount of rubbish polluting our oceans and helps to create a cleaner planet for wildlife and for future generations. Finally, our proudest achievement was cooperating with the school Principal to help plan and put into action our idea for solar panels, that will soon be coming to the College. The solar panels will dramatically decrease the College’s electricity usage and harmful impact on the environment. Moreover, it will be our legacy as Environment Portfolio Captains for 2016/2017 and it will become a pivotal part of the school in the years to come. Unfortunately, our time as Environment Portfolio Captains has come to an end. We have loved every moment in our role and would like to say thank you to all those that have helped us and got involved along the way.

Student Leadership Farewell from the 2016-2017 Student Leadership Team The last 6 years have brought many pleasures and memories that are unforgettable. We leave with smiles on our faces and look forward to the future ahead. As the Year 12 Leadership Team of 2016-2017 and as part of the community of St Peter’s Catholic College, this is our last message of farewell. We thank all teachers for their help, dedication and encouragement. Although, it is unfortunate that the new library was not ready for us to use, we will be excited to see it being used in the years ahead by the younger generation of students. We are also proud to leave an environmental legacy of the solar panels with the hope that we have encouraged future leaders to further improve the environmental footprint in our community. In sport, we challenged the staff to netball, Oz tag and volleyball, while we had varying victories, we definitely won in spirit. This year’s Winter Sleep Out for Vinnies was a night to remember and together we achieved the greatest amount of items donated so far. More recently, we had our first successful Chill-Out Café and know the students will be looking forward to the next one in Term 4. Lastly, our most cherished gift to the community is the school song which we hope will become an integral part of any formal occasion. With 3 weeks left we'll try to make our goodbyes short and sweet. Thank you to everyone who has given us the strength to learn and grow as people. Farewell, from the Year 12s of 2017.
