Media Interview

Electronics Supply & Manufacturing China, August 2010

Mr. Bu Yangchun, product manager, Fujitsu Semiconductor (Shanghai) Co Ltd, was interviewed by Electronics Supply &Manufacturing-China. They discussed STB market trends.

Page 7: If you can't read the mail, please visit here >> SEMICONDUCTOR LI… · activities and its marketing efforts by launching new products and organizing promotional events, This strategy

English Version:

Triple play plan will greatly increase the STB market demand

The convergence of telecommunications network, radio networks and Internet, which have been discussed for manyyears, finally started in 2010. As an important device connecting the three networks, set-top-box (STB) is undoubtedlybecoming the biggest beneficiary.

From the original analog channel supplementer, to the channel decoder receiving digital satellite television, to receivingelectronic program guide and radio programs, STB is no longer limited to receiving TV programs in a traditional way, andits role in a family is changing with the moving forward of triple play. With the deepening of triple play, STB market isinjected new vitality.

Three barriers to be stepped over

It is predicted by organizations that after triple play, the income from the media and entertainment business of China'sfixed broadband networks will exceed the income from mobile communication, and only the media and entertainmentbusiness will contribute 0.8 percentage points to China's GDP growth. Through the development of triple play in severalyears, more than 600 billion of investment scale will be formed.

Triple play totally subverted the appendage status of STB traditionally focusing on receiving TV program, and reversedthe TV set-based, STB-assisted pattern. In the future, the TV set is only a stage, and it is STB featuring individualizationthat really plays a key role. However, triple play is both a new opportunity and a new challenge for STB market.

Bu Yangchun: unified and open software application platform will attract more application developers and provide userswith more flexibilities and choices.

Firstly, if video, voice and data are integrated in STB, it is clear that great pressure will be brought upon the hardwareplatform. Bu Yangchun, product manager of Fujitsu Semiconductor (Shanghai) Co Ltd, believes that triple play raiseshigher requirements for the software and hardware platforms of STB: stronger processing ability, more functions andbetter connectivity.

"In terms of hardware, the requirements for the processing speed of master chip are not so high, but the STB must havean independent hardware audio and video processing unit. This is very important. The hardware integration is not as highas possible. Going too far is as bad as not going far enough," said Mr Bu. "Even for Intel PC chip with mainfrequency reaching over 2GHz, it is very difficult to process full HD video with software. The integrated chips should be

Page 8: If you can't read the mail, please visit here >> SEMICONDUCTOR LI… · activities and its marketing efforts by launching new products and organizing promotional events, This strategy

chosen according to specific applications."

Triple play determines the core position of STB in home appliances in the future, and information center will sharecontents with more equipment, so the connectivity between STB and other electronic products can not be neglected. MrBu believes that the support of general-purpose interfaces such as USB is very important, because the USB interfaceenhances the scalability of STB, and there are various kinds of equipment with USB interface. Two or more USBinterfaces will bring more advantages to STB.

In terms of software, the traditional proprietary operating system, software platform and middleware will face more andmore challenges, and it is increasingly more urgent to make Internet application compatible. "Unified and open softwareapplication platform will attract more application developers and provide end-users with more flexibilities and choices. The emergence of the new requirements will require chip manufacturers to have better forward-looking ability as well asthe ability to respond quickly," said Mr Bu. He predicted that the open operating systems such as Linux and Androidwill be more popular.

Finally, in terms of operating mode, the STB market will encounter the mutual restrictions of telecommunications and radionetworks. Even if the STB steps over the two barriers including software and hardware, it may not be able to achievehappy ending. The competition between telecommunications and radio networks will grow with the deepening of triple playinvolving both mutual penetration of technologies and interest distribution of cross-sector monopolies. How to breakindustry barriers and to unite telecommunications and radio networks is a headache for the industry.

China Electronics News, July 6, 2010

Mr. Lu Biao, marketing manager of Fujitsu Semiconductor (Shanghai) Co Ltd, was interviewed by China ElectronicsNews. He was questioned on USB 3.0 market trends.

English Version:

USB 3.0: market warming up, Chinese enterprises to play an important role

Intel delays program; USB 3.0 market set to erupt around 2011 or 2012

• Intel will introduce products supporting USB 3.0 around 2012

• At around the end of 2011 or beginning of 2012, USB 3.0 is expected to begin to dominate the market

Page 9: If you can't read the mail, please visit here >> SEMICONDUCTOR LI… · activities and its marketing efforts by launching new products and organizing promotional events, This strategy

2010 was supposed to be the year that USB 3.0 took the world by storm. Many manufacturers had high hopes andstarted actively promoting its development. However, Intel's new generation 6 series main board does not support theUSB 3.0 chipset, creating a significant obstacle in USB 3.0's path to market. In fact, as the development of USB 3.0 will,at first, depend on computer products, and given Intel's dominant position in that market, the approach that Intel takes tothe new technology is critical. Won't Intel's lack of timely support for USB 3.0 have a huge effect on the take-up of USB3.0?

Lu Biao, marketing manager at Fujitsu Semiconductor (Shanghai) Co Ltd, who actively displayed USB 3.0–relatedsemiconductor products at tradeshows early this year, replied. "As a matter of fact, the main CPU manufacturer's delayin launching integrated USB 3.0 chips has hindered the development pace of USB 3.0." He added, however, that,as the change from USB 1.1 to USB 2.0 had ultimately proved irresistible for the industry, he was certain that the era ofUSB 3.0 would eventually arrive. He predicted that by the end of this year, consumers would certainly see the emergenceof a large number of USB 3.0-integrated equipment. So far as Mr. Lu was aware, customer feedback on USB 3.0products had been positive. Fujitsu Semiconductor is cooperating with many PC and peripherals manufacturers inincorporating the new technology. He cited the example of the company's cooperation with Japan's largest PCperipherals manufacturer, Buffalo, which is making USB 3.0-integrated HDD and external blue-ray products,

Not many USB 3.0 chips in the market; solution cost still high

Fujitsu Semiconductor is one of the first chip makers to achieve formal certification by the USB Implementers Forum. Thecompany mainly provides USB 3.0 - SATA bridge ICs and related solutions. Their product is one of the first available USB3.0 ICs for PC peripherals to enable high-speed data transfer. It integrates on a single chip the USB signalcommunication control circuits, SATA signal communication control circuits, USB 3.0 and SATA protocol and commandcontrol circuits, and Fujitsu proprietary high-speed serial interface technologies. Utilizing a 65nm process, the producthas lower power consumption and a smaller chip area. According to Mr. Lu, the bridge is mainly used in external storagedevices or CD-ROMs, and will probably start to appear in other products such as mobile devices and portable hard drivesin the future. Fujitsu Semiconductor is actively planning for the next generation of richer, more flexible USB 3.0-relatedproducts.

USB 3.0 and HDMI fight for mobile device market

• It is hard for USB 3.0 interface to replace DP or HDMI

• The battle for market dominance between USB 3.0 and HDMI will firstly take place in the portable device market

USB 3.0 can provide a maximum data-transfer rate of 5GB/s. This means that a 27GB file – the same amount of data asa Blu-ray disc -- would take 90 seconds to transfer (although there are slight variations in test data among differentmanufacturers). USB 3.0 can even transmit unzipped HD video. So will USB 3.0 have any effect on existing high-speedinterface technologies such as HDMI and DisplayPort (DP)?

Industry players have different views on it, and Mr. Lu was uncertain for the time being. He believes that the relativepopularity of USB 3.0 will definitely have some effect on comparable technologies, but how great that effect would beremained to be seen: the answer would depend on the industry and ultimately the end-application market. He pointed outthat different interface standards had different intended applications.

Eight products reveal emerging trends

Post-show reports on Computex 2010

Eight key products and technologies were displayed in Computex 2010, including 3D display, a new multi-touch screen, digital signage products, digital home, a tablet PC, an e-book reader, the 11n video transmission process and USB 3.0.

Photo 1 Tradeshow data

The real business opportunity of 3D display lies in PCs

The highlight of video technology at Computex this year is none other than 3D video. Mobile devices with 3-inch screensright up to 50-inch FPD can all be equipped with 3D video, transforming the image watched by the user.

But closer inspection reveals that many of these 3D applications are in their infancy, either still at the experimental stageor very early adopters. It's also open to doubt, for now, whether users will purchase expensive 3D TVs (for example)while so few little video content is available in 3D. To compensate for this relatively low level of demand, somemanufacturers have been forced to lower prices to promotional levels. The technology still has some way to come.

A similar picture exists in terms of 3D display applications in mobile phones. Most exist to provide a value-added elementto the mobile phone in order to generate sales, but this has strategy has seen only limited success: not many functionsthat benefit from 3D can be adopted for the small screen of a mobile phone, and users may well be reluctant to put on 3Dglasses in order to use their mobile phone.

Photo 2 3D display flourishes in PC applications

The most fruitful opportunities for 3D technology are thought to exist in PC applications. So far, not many PC gamessupport 3D, but gaming fanatics are thought to be willing to invest in the upgrade, so this may change as content evolvesto embrace the new technology. As it does so, 3D will become a bigger opportunity. Chip-makers are therefore

developing chips that meet the requirements for 3D.

Nvidia's president and CEO, Huang Renxun, believes that PCs will be the strongest platform for 3D technology for theforeseeable future. In addition to 3D games, PCs can also act as 3D-integrated media centers, incorporating 3D stereoimage play.

Semiconductor trend: uniting performance and cost is the route to success

Among the newly-launched semiconductor solutions, the latest market trend is demand for parity between cost andperformance. One of a number of solutions that Fujitsu Semiconductor showcased at the tradeshow, the 8-bit MCU,which features full HD H.264 encoding and decoding, and the Mobile Milbeaut ICs were highlights.

In terms of MCUs, Fujitsu Semiconductor's major products have applications in home appliances and portable medicalproducts featuring two-channel high-performance Flash memory, which has high security and can be read and overwritten100,000 times. In addition, these products have built-in LCD controllers, which enable them to be used in products whichuse LCD displays, such as blood pressure monitors and remote controls.

In terms of mobile phone image processing, Fujitsu Semiconductor's new products feature full HD output and highresolution, and support Scalado's SpeedView technology. This enables them to make up for the shortcomings of thecurrent mobile phone video shoot functions. In addition, the products use a 90nm process and perform well in terms ofpower consumption. Fujitsu Semiconductor displayed full HD H.264 encoding and decoding solutions and next-generationHD multi-standard video decoder solutions, which have applications in high-end digital cameras, security monitoring andbroadcast equipment. The H.264 products are mainly applied in set-top boxes, and the multi-standard solutions use 65nmprocess technology and incorporate 512MB of memory, enabling the systems to consume minimal power (at 1.0W)during full HD transcoding. This handy feature reduces system size and cost.

Esmchina.com, June 2010

Farewell to figures: car dashboard enters image age

Car dashboard has transferred from original mechanical dial scale to the control center of the whole automotiveelectronic system. In fact, it is not appropriate to label the human-machine interface (HMI) as dashboard, because HMI isno longer an instrument with limited information, but an all-embracing information center.

Just dashboard pointer and graduation obviously can not meet the great demand on the enormous amount of informationof driving safety and infotainment, so dashboard is being replaced by LCD screen.

The dashboard entering image age must have a multi-media chip. In order to meet the demand on increasingly enormousamount of in-vehicle information, Fujitsu Semiconductor launched single chips integrating more features on graphicdisplay and video processing, including MCU control, stepper motor drive as well as GDC and Video/Camera inputcontrol. Fujitsu Semiconductor predicts that future dashboard design requires larger-size LCD to support moreinformation; at the same time, new instrument needs to add the gateway function. In addition to integrating 5-phasestepper motor, Fujitsu Semiconductor's 16FX MCU MB96380 family supports LCD display up to 260 segments and 288Kinternal flash, and delivers gateway function with 2-way CAN bus.

Traditional instrument form makes a breakthrough; LEC and LCD are extensively applied

Ding Jiezao: electronic LCD car instrument will become mainstream in the market in 2011

In order to rapidly and accurately convey complex information, figure is no longer exclusive language of dashboard, andcharacter, color and graphics have also become expression ways of dashboard. The multiple language of dashboardmainly benefit from the applications of LED and LCD in automobiles, and the advancement of display technology meetsthe requirements of dashboard for explosive information.

Mr Welch Ding, product manager of Fujitsu Semiconductor (Shanghai) Co Ltd, predicts that electronic automotive LCDinstrument will gradually replace mechanical instrument and become mainstream in the market in 2011; by 2013,mid-range instrument with TFT screen display and stepper motor will be increased to around 26 percent of the market; by2015, virtual instrument with full TFT screen display will account for about 3 percent market share.

According to the requirements of high-, mid- and low-range automobiles, Fujitsu Semiconductor makes a completeclassification based on the display type of car dashboard: electronic instrument with TNLCD, STNLCD and stepper motordisplay for low-range automobile, electronic instrument with TFT screen display and stepper motor meter for mid-rangeautomobile, and all virtual instrument with full TFT screen display for high-range automobile with all display informationprocessed by way of graphic display. For the low-range instrument, Fujitsu Semiconductor has MB95F176/188 andMB90F927; for mid-range instrument, Fujitsu Semiconductor has MB96F380 and MB91F465C/467DA; for high-rangeinstrument, Fujitsu Semiconductor has Jade MB86R01 all virtual instrument solution.
