If Only
1
If Only A walk upon the treadmill pavement Knees weak The ground moves By some machination of an indifferent universe A crawl along the endless concrete Drowning in a sea of strangers Like a boat with no wind in its sails Or a bloody, crippled animal Dragging itself to God-knows-where Tasked with the chore of being alive Obligated to exist Did I ask for this? A longing stare at the mocking sidewalk Hoping maybe That the earth will open up its mouth And swallow me Like 20 milligrams of Fluoxetine I meet eyes with a passing bus And imagine stepping From the curb At the last minute To greet its windshield Like a long-forgotten lover
