This week’s Saints

Monday - St Andrew Bobola SJ was a Polish missionary who was martyred (1657) by Cossacks and is venerated as the Apostle of Lithuania. He is invoked as a patron of Catholic/Orthodox unity.

Thursday - St Dunstan is a very popular English saint (10th century - abbot and bishop) who according to legend pinched the devil's nose with a pair of hot tongs. Such stories have a serious message: the devil cannot bear to be ridiculed.

Friday - St Bernadine of Siena was a popular Franciscan friar (d 1444) who preached devotion to the Holy Name of Jesus. His IHS banner (first letters of the Greek name of Jesus) inspired the Jesuit monogram.

Saturday - St Cristobal Magallenes was a Mexican priest who become a hero to his flock in Totatiche when they were oppressed by anti-Catholic revolutionaries. He was shot in 1927.

"Faith is a flame that grows

stronger the more it is shared and passed on".

We invite young volunteers to help (with leading groups,

singing, acting, taking pictures, etc.) in a youth Congress called

Convivio. Convivio is a Congress for

Catholic students in secondary school, that is taking place once more in Manchester on 13th-

14th July at Holy Cross College in Bury (9.30am-2.30pm).

This year's theme will be 'MErcy begins with ME' and it will

include a variety of activities centred on Mercy. If you would

like to get involved in the organising team as a volunteer,

please contact us:

[email protected]

Michael turned 91 this Saturday and he is a

valued member of our team because he has

been serving in the Holy Name since he was 7

years old (84 years). The community is having

a special birthday lunch on Tuesday 17th May

to celebrate with him. This picture is of him

and Shiela on his 90th birthday last year. We

wish Michael all the best for the year ahead.

Prayer Group for Persecuted Christians Last week: We prayed together for Fr. Tom Uzhunnali, who has been kidnapped by Islamic militants in Yemen, for two months now. Thanks to all those who joined us on Wednesday and others who remembered Fr. Tom in their prayers during the week. This week: Let's pray for Asia Bibi, a Christian

woman, who is accused of blasphemy and has

finally received the death sentence in Pakistan.

Please join us in remembering her in our prayers this week especially on Wednesday, 18th May 2016 at 6.45pm in Holy Name Church Please let us know if you would like us to pray for anyone in particular, who is suffering religious persecution or oppression anywhere in the world. Contact: Hinna ([email protected])

Last week Fr David Stewart spoke to us about the Pope’s Worldwide Prayer Network, also known as the Apostleship of Prayer. You join the network by praying daily, even for a few seconds at a time, and sharing the Pope’s monthly prayer intentions. Making a prayer intention is also an

intention to do things to actualise the intentions which concern the world in general and evangelisation. Being a worldwide network, information and the intentions are available in several languages (English, French, Portuguese, and Spanish). The main website is www.apmej.org www.clicktopray.org is a website and app that help you to pray daily and to connect with other people who are also praying. There is also an opportunity to ask for prayers for your specific intentions and also to pray for the specific intentions of other users of the app. We also have various leaflets at the back of the church with more information.

THIS MONDAY 16th May

The Chaplaincy has a close working relationship with local PCSO Sarah Monaghan and we are keen for her to come and give a talk here in May as she is currently a volunteer at MASH (Manchester Action for Street Health.) which supports sex workers within Greater Manchester. (http://www.mash.org.uk/) We have asked Sarah to give a short presentation on human trafficking and sexual exploitation, alongside her role at MASH and the work the GMP does to support the victims of human trafficking and modern slavery.

Monday 16th May - Sarah will give a short talk at 6.30pm at the Catholic Chaplaincy and then open the floor for questions and discussion.

All University students are welcome to attend!

Volunteers needed for our Tesco Food Drive next weekend! We have a one day food drive planned at Tesco Extra Gorton (M18 8LD) next Saturday (21st May). We still need volunteers on the day to help distribute our foodbank's shopping lists to customers as they enter the store and to help sort/pack donations as they are received. If you would like to volunteer on the day any time between 9am and 6pm please email: [email protected]

Volunteers needed for nightclub fundraiser on Saturday 21st May In the evening following our Tesco Food Drive we have another Food 4 Thought Nightclub fundraising event. The Food 4 Thought events, hosted by local DJs LEVELZ take place at a local Manchester nightclub (venue to be confirmed soon!) offer free entry to any attendees who bring tins of food for our foodbank on the night. The event will start around 10pm and is likely to go on late into the night! Should anyone wish to volunteer at the event (helping collect tins and transporting them into our van) please email: [email protected] for more information.

We received a request for volunteers to help at the SVP Furniture Warehouse and Charity Shop. If you have one day a week to spare or are staying here over the summer and would like to volunteer - please follow up with Beverley directly (see below for details). Feel free to pass on to anyone that you know that might be interested. Two volunteer opportunities:

1. There is a Furniture depot in Middleton, Manchester that runs 5 days a week picking up donations and doing deliveries. We are desperate need of some volunteers to answer telephone enquiries (from 10.00-4pm daily) take orders or pick ups and relay this info to the van drivers, as well as basic filing and computer literate activities.

2. Charity shop assistants helping with all manner of shop duties including steaming, sorting and shop merchandising etc.

We would be happy with odd days here and there if people can commit, but regularity and continuity are really important for us to ensure that the volunteers get the most out of what they are doing. We can always look at rotating from option 1 to option 2 to feed variety.
