Our Mission:Understand someone's point of view so we
can design something USEFUL & MEANINGFULfor them.
We start by GAINING EMPATHY.
The Empathetic InterviewTIP 1
Assign the following roles
within your team so that each
person has a clear purpose
visible to the participant:
One person to lead the
interview
One to two note takers
(note page follows)
ASK THESE QUESTIONSStrive for a conversation AND make sure everyone has a chance to respond to every question.
A. OPEN SPECIFIC1. What do you teach?
2. How long have you been at UK?
3. Describe your current research agenda.
4. What kinds of needs do you have as a researcher?5. What kinds of needs do you think you may have that are different from other
researchers you know?
B. GO BROAD1. What are your research aspirations for the future at UK?
2. Why those aspirations?
3. What do you see that could get in the way of achieving those aspirations? It could be
anything -- not necessarily school or work-related.
C. PROBE DEEPREMIND EVERYONE: We want to figure out how to create an IER that amazes the
faculty and staff.
1. What are the biggest problems currently in attaining the support youd like to have
regarding research?
2. What are some possible solutions for those problems?
3. Have you had experiences with similar services elsewhere? If so, what where those
experiences like?
4. What are some expectations youd have of an IER that worked really well?
5. If our college had a high-functioning IER that was able to meet those expectations, howwould that make you feel?
Listen and be attentive.
Allow long pauses.
Ask naive questions even if
you are an expert.
Don't correct people.
REMEMBER:
They are the experts.

Synthesis: Unpack your observations and SATURATE your team's space(wall or table). Generate several "USER" CHARACTERISTICS.
Use sticky notes on the wall or table -- then sort them by heading
Write down AT LEAST 3 CHARACTERISTICS from
EACH category below regarding the people at the table: Demographic information -- as much as you can think of Aspirations Sources of motivation Things they needto be able to do to succeed
Things they can't stand Things they don't want How they want to feel (empowered, respected, happy, etc.)

SHAREyour thoughts + CAPTUREfeedback.TO THE RESEARCH COMMITTEE MEMBER: Walk your table members through the sticky notes.Explain what you have heard them say, ask them if you're right, what should be added, what needsto be taken out. Ask them if they buy into the things that have been written on the sticky notes.
Write down some new things we've learned about the folks atthe table and their NEEDS:
TIP
If a member asks:
"Will your plan have X or Y?"
You say:
"Should it have X or Y?"
REMEMBER: The table members
are the experts
Not sure if you uncovered
enough characteristics?
Ask the members to help!
