Indigenous Education Network Week in Review: November 11

Ahnii and good afternoon everyone,

Each and every week the volunteers at the Indigenous Education Network (IEN) are hard at work planning and organizing cultural events that are educational and inspirational for you – the members, and friends of the IEN – to ensure your time at the University of Toronto is as rich and rewarding as the quality of education you are receiving.

To help you stay up-to-date on what is happening and what has happened at the IEN and around campus, we have launched the IEN Week in Review.

Please feel free to forward this to your friends and colleagues, and if you have any feedback for us we would love to hear from you.

IEN Remembers Those Who Served

Today being Remembrance Day the IEN remembers and honours all of our people who have served and who are currently serving in the Armed Forces. Our thoughts and prayers also go out to our brothers and sisters who have passed on for the contributions they made to our people, Canadians, and the peoples of the world in general. Miigwetch doesn’t begin to express our gratitude. And while we have never forgotten, today in particular we remember.

For more info on our Peoples’ contribution to armed conflict throughout history visit http://www.veterans.gc.ca/eng/history/other/nativehttp://www.cmp-cpm.forces.gc.ca/dhh-dhp/pub/boo-bro/abo-aut/index-eng.asp

Dr. Suzanne L. Stewart Presents to Correctional Service Canada

On November 2 and 3, 2011 our Chair, Dr. Suzanne L. Stewart, Special Advisor to the Dean on Aboriginal Education and Research, gave a presentation to Correctional Service Canada, Addictions Research Centre (CSC-ARC) in Prince Edward Island. Suzanne’s presentation titled Aboriginal Research Ethics in Addictions, looked at how to conduct ethical and appropriate research with Aboriginal inmates.

The presentation was well received by the CSC-ARC Research Officers in attendance from across Canada. CRC-ARC will be revisiting their strategies for addictions research

to indentify ways to work from a community-based perspective as a result of Suzanne’s presentation.

For more info on Suzanne’s work please visit www.slideshare.net/IENatOISE.

IEN Launches Facebook Page

Regular readers of the IEN Week in Review know that we have been experimenting with social media vehicles to reach you, the members, to provide you with updates on what is happening at the IEN through means easily accessible to you. What better way to do that than by joining Facebook? Just like you we promised ourselves that we wouldn’t give in to the FB craze that has swept the world; but just like you we, too, have caved.

Those said, ‘like’ us on Facebook…and tell all your friends. Because the more people know about what is happening at the IEN, the greater reach and impact all of our work will have on the people we do this work for - The People. And you if you ever have anything you would like us to share, please, simply let us know.

Aboriginal Education Day – November 17 and CANAB

The Canadian Aboriginal Festival (CANAB) returns to Toronto this year, having spent the past two years in Hamilton. The Festival, the “signature event” for Canadian Aboriginal peoples will be staged over four days. Organizers are confident that attendance will exceed past years with more than 40,000 visitors taking in the festival.

This year's Education Day is on November 17th. Students will have a number of topic options from as many as thirty teaching stations in the building ranging from heritage and culture, traditional games, dancing and more. The majority of the teaching stations are participatory.
