IEMC MUSTANG
I placed my car as ‘Stang of the Month in the IEMC Newsletter in June 2017. At that
time my car was undergoing restoration which was started in November 2016. At that time
Ken Degenstein, a close friend and former member of the IEMC, discussed with me doing a concours rotisserie restoration on my car. I had just received my Elite Marti Report through
Kevin Marti.
The report came back and stated that the car was a one-of-one as ordered and was
produced January 30th, 1969 in the San Jose,
California plant. The report also stated that
there was a trim variation on Marti Report for
which I was unsure how the term was defined.
The previous owner sold the car to me in
1996. When I purchased the car it did not
have the Mach 1 stripes on the car. My assump-tion was that a previous owner had removed
the stripes.
After I purchased the car I went back
to Roger and traded the headers and stereo to him for the AM 8-track and original exhaust
manifolds. I then took the car to Ken who detailed the engine, added a fold down rear seat
purchased from Jim Fox, and added the Mach 1 stripes. Afterwards I took the car back to Roger
to show him the upgrades and he informed me that the car never had the Mach 1 stripes. I then
drove and enjoyed the car for the next twenty years, going to car shows until I had a few
issues and decided to restore the car.

During the process of the restoraon I went back to the previous owner, who sll lives in the same house, to gain
more informaon on the car prior to my purchasing the car. Roger explained to me his old neighbor Ernie purchased the car
in 1970 while Roger was in high school and he automacally fell in love with the car. In 1979 he was able to purchase the car
from Ernie. Roger changed the wheels to Magnum 500’s, added power steering (as it was difficult to drive), put in a new
stereo, and added headers. He also stated that as long as he knew the car, there were never any Mach 1 stripes on the car. I
am in the process now of trying to find the original owner from 1969. I am 99% sure now that the car never came with the
Mach 1 stripes.
The car was first disassembled at
Ken’s house by Ken, Brian Grennell, and
myself. Everything was labeled, bagged and
boxed. All boxes and removed parts came to
my house to be refurbished. The car was
placed on a rosserie and stripped with
Dustless Blasng. Bodywork was done by
Steve Cockburn here in town. Ken also helped
with painng to insure the underneath of the
car had the proper drips, paint and proper
orange peel for judging.
I travel in my job and Ken would assign me
concours correct parts to find or people who restored
original parts for the car and I would spend my evenings
scouring the internet. During the process I have met some
very knowledgeable people who have helped me to
restore the car back to as original as the day she le6 San
Jose. Ken even contacted the authors of the book on
detailing 428CJ and consulted with JD Larson, Jeff Speegle,
and Joe Sikora. Most parts are restored or NOS.

The car is now done. Mitch came to appraise the car
for insurance. Jeff Speegle was scheduled to come to Spokane
for a private consultaon and judging of the car. We will now
have to wait unl the virus is under control to reschedule a
visit. I am in the process of meeng with Titus Will Ford in
Tacoma who originally sold the car and waing for contact info
for Ernie the second owner to verify the stripe delete.
The car will not be driven and will be trailered to
shows. Can’t wait ll I can begin showing car once all
returns to normal. Hoping to have car judged by July of
this year. Hope all of you are well.

Hey there, looks like I caught you at home! Hope
this finds you all safe and virus free.
Hang in there for a little while longer, we’ve got to
be getting close to an end. Talk of a vaccine that works
looks promising. Our area is still doing ok so far regarding
the number of people with the virus. We have all been
doing a good job. The one good thing is that my “honey
do” list is getting smaller. I may need a vacation when this
is all over!
Behind the scenes: Not a lot of new information to
talk about. I’ve been talking with some of the people that
monitor the Corona Virus situation in Spokane, getting
information on how and when we can start cruising again. I
should have all the info soon to pass along.
We’re working on a plan to help support Gus
Johnson Ford’s peanut butter drive. Gus has been one of
our best supporters for years and we want to be sure we
let him know we support him too. Dropping off peanut
butter and/or a donation to the cause may not work. We
are looking at mailing Gus a check with our thanks etc.
We’re not sure when his show room will open again.
We will try to keep everyone informed on what’s
happening.
Thank you to all of you working for the cause.
Caregivers, nurses, doctors, hospital employees and others
working those long days because you’re needed…Thank
You. You are our heroes!
We will be on the road again soon!
Take care of each other.

Ponies on the Trail
Bonnie and I have been visiting Arizona for a few years now, loving warm dry winters. This year’s trip started with a 3 month home lease in the Phoenix area, and the car loading began at the end of December. We packed Bonnie’s SUV and our ’06 convertible and headed for the sun. We left in a snow shower and headed down the I-5 coast route to avoid as much winter weather as possible. All went well and we arrived 4 days later with weather in the 70’s. Arizona is a car lover’s paradise, especially ‘Stangs, they are everywhere. I didn’t see my rare Tungsten Grey color (2006 – 2007 only) so it was nice to have something unusual. We attended the Barrett Jackson Auction – over 1000 cars to sell with a wide variety of Mustangs. Highlights were the Ford, Roush, and Shelby booths with a 2020 on its’ side to show the technology underneath, also the original prototype
Shelby. An autocross course was set up for 2020 Shelby’s, giving rides with pro drivers.
We attended a few ‘cars and coffee’ events which take place on Saturday mornings and attract a diverse group of
cars. Unfortunately due to the virus, our anticipated trip to Tucson to 1 of 4 Mustang Club of America meets
was cancelled. It has been rescheduled for October and hope to be back there by then. Hopefully we’ll have
some IEMC events by then also!
