14. Blood Donation Drive

14th February, the black day in Indian history, was marked monumental in S.P.I.T. with its annual blood donation drive. Organised by Rotaract club of SPIT and IEEE SPIT this year, the drive was successfully managed and executed by the two committees along with B.S.E.S M G Hospital located at D J Goenka Blood Bank, Andheri. Arranged within the college premises, it was inaugurated by Dr R G Sutar (Dean Academics, S.P.I.T.) and Dr Vinod Sikka (Training and Placement Officer, S.P.I.T.) The event started at 10 am in the morning and saw enthusiastic participation from many. Everyone from SPIT, the freshers to faculty donated. The volunteers helped the anxious donors through the process, be it providing them with water, food or just some company.

Around noon, nearing the end of the event, the room was filled with happy faces and was bubbling with positivity of the gathered humanitarians. From laying out all the essentials for the donors to cleaning up after the drive, the collective effort of the two committees and cooperation from the blood bank staff members resulted in the event being such a grand success, in spite of being organised in a short span of time. About 78 pints of blood were collected in just 4 hours. The number and diversity of donor’s present proved that you don’t need to have a medical degree to save a life, just a fair degree of humanity is enough. With an initiative like this, the committees highlighted the cruciality and importance of donation in today’s time when the need for blood is constant. “I truly believe that a single pint can save three lives, a single gesture can create a million smiles.” - Vedant Sapte, President of Rotaract Club SPIT.
