Electric Energy: Smart Grid• Smart Grid: over US$7 Billion Invested in R&D by US Gov. in the

Past 6 Years• Essential Transformation of the Infrastructure, Paradigm Shift:

– Generation: Massive Transition to Smaller Capacity, Often Renewable Resources (Multiple Issues, Economic, Operational, etc.)

– Growing Awareness of Environmental Impact of Generation– Transmission: Growing Transition to Faster, More Accurate Monitoring Using PMUs, Power Electronics Controllers, HVDC

– Distribution: Distributed Generation, Microgrids, Smart Meters, New Load Types (PHEV, EV)

– End Use: Energy Efficient Homes, Building Energy Management Systems, Zero Energy Homes, Energy Pricing, Impact of Policy

Need Example: DOE Stimulus for Synchrophasors

Source: NASPI

• ~700 new Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) to be installed and networked with existing measuring devices  during 2010 ‐ 2013

• New technology with new products (PMUs, Phasor Data Concentrators, Application Tools, etc.) released during the deployment phase

• Need for updated, coordinated, and new standards and guides to support interoperability

• IEEE PES took initiative in collaboration with DOE, NIST, IEC, North American Synchrophasor Initiative (NASPI) on creating standards and guides needed by the users
