Transcript of IE MIM APPLICATION
Question A: If you had the opportunity,
what actions would you demand of the
United Nation Secretary General and why?
IE Business School: Hugo Lima
Brazil has a population of
over 200 million people.
Brazil is best known for
its nature, culture and
passion for the national
sport: football.
• We have one of the most successful football teams.
• We are hosting the 2016 Summer Olympic Games.
BUT....We are also leading in another area: the fight against world hunger.
The Alimentaçao Escolar
Program is an initiative
provided by the government
in Brazil which aids children
with over 43 million meals
per day. It is the oldest and
most successful feeding
programs in the world
This began in 1963 by the
Brazilian government and
the World Food Program
and they began to provide
free meals in schools across
the country to children
The joint effort lasted twelve years, and then
the government was able to handle the program
themselves.
In 2010, the World Food Prize was won by Brazil´s president at the time Lula da Silva due to the efforts of eliminating hunger in
Brazil.
• In 2009, Brazil extended its
initiative by starting the Fome
Zero program in order to
eliminate hunger and poverty
that still exist in the country.
• This program provides some of
the poorest families an income
to help them survive.
Due to Brazil´s efforts it was able to
reduce the hunger rate by 50% in
2010.
This resulted in Brazil becoming the
first Latin American country to reach
a goal set by the United Nations.
HOW?
• Through direct financial aid to the poorest families
• Creating water cisterns in arid areas.
• Building low-cost restaurants.
• Distributing vitamins and iron supplements
• Supporting family farming and giving access to credit.
• Education
EFFECTS:• Significant effects on school attendance.
• Positive education outcomes
• Important decrease in the number of children working.
• Strong impact on children's growth and diet quality. Decrease of child mortality
If I only had the chance to talk to Mr. Ban Ki-moon....I would demand more investment and
commitment in proposals to fight poverty
and hunger and to promote food security.
795 million people, which equates to 1 in 9
people are living below the poverty line and
do not have enough food available to them.
The majority of these people are living in
developing nations, and this must take
precedence over other matters for the ONU.
• One child dies every 5 seconds from hunger.• More people die from hunger than Aids, Malaria and Tuberculosis
combined.• 66 million primary school aged children attend classes hungry across the
developing world, with 23 million in Africa alone.• Sub-Saharan Africa is the region with the highest prevalence of hunger.
One person in four there is malnourished• Asia is the continent with the most hungry people - two thirds of the total.
DO YOU STILL THINK IT IS NOT AN IMPORTANT MATTER?
The model provided by Brazil and its supporters should be set for other countries by the United Nations. With the help of the UN, FAO and the World Bank, if other countries implement a similar program we will be able to reduce hunger in developing countries.
Ending poverty and hunger needs to be recognized and the causes must be adhered to directly. By establishing programs which assist with agriculture, food systems, and feeding programs we will be able to combat these issues and end poverty and hunger from developing nations.
THANK YOU.
