Bryce Linsky, a SWAT cop from Connecticut, has captured countless High Lawman trophies with his single-action S&W 9mm, a gun whose previous claim to fame was its many wins in the semiautomatic pistol category at the national PPC championships. Kinny Corthell is another top IDPA shoot who has garnered many trophies with a single-action Performance Center S&W 9mm. That's the minimum the ammo needs to do in ESP, same as in IDPA's most popular category, Stock Service Pistol. Defrag myth bustersProtect your IT department against fragmentationOf late, the 9mm 1911 has come to rule the ESP wars. Almost recoilless compared to the .45 ACP ball round the platform was designed for, the 9mm 1911 can be remarkably accurate. It has all the great ergonomics associated with the deathless old .45 and one more--extremely mild recoil, which means you can hit with it faster. Scott Warren, who has won many honors in ESP including The Big One, the National Championship itself, uses a Springfield Armory 1911-A1 with sights of his own design. There are other makes in the mix. Colt has run some 9mm 1991A1s. One of these, fine-tuned by Al Greco (www.alscustom.com) got me through the door as Master in ESP. STI makes a very nice single-stack 9mm, the Trojan, and I won the single match I shot with my test sample. When a geezer gun writer can win a match with a pistol, you know it's shootable. ESP Wide Bodies The coming thing, though, seems to be the double-stack, high-capacity 9mm 1911. Produced by such firms as STI and ParaOrdnance, these guns do fine with dirt-cheap generic factory 9mm Parabellum ammo, and they allow the full 11-round capacity authorized in ESP, as it is in Stock Service Pistol. Every now and then, you find a stage of fire with, say, five cardboard targets needing double taps and a single steel Pepper Popper, which can be completed without a reload if you have 11 cartridges on board. We keep hearing about 10-shot 1911 9mm single-stack magazines, but they're like alligators in the sewer: you hear about them, but you can never find one. The Smith 952's magazine, like the standard 9mm 1911's, holds but nine rounds. This is why most of the winners shooting Smiths choose double-stack Performance Center models. One of these in .40 S&W does double duty as an IPSC Limited gun. I watched a young cop named Rob Vogel utterly dominate the Midwest Regional IDPA Championships in 2005, shooting an STI .40 in ESP, and he placed second at the Nationals a week later. Rob tells me it's no trick to load the .40 down to the IDPA ESP power floor, and the softer loads, of course, are more controllable. Crossover Guns I'm seeing a lot of folks shooting Stock Service Pistols in the Enhanced Service Pistol division. Several things account for this. One is the full 11 rounds a double-stack 9ram brings to the table. Another is a Glock modified with a Robar or similar grip trim goes from Stock to Enhanced per IDPA rules. One more is the Springfield Armory XD, which feels like a Glock when you shoot it, is categorized as a single action because of its mechanical design. (Springfield raised hell about this, but the thing of it is, the XD is doing surprisingly well in IDPA. You have only to watch Rob Leatham shoot one to understand why.) IDPA waffled on the HK P7 for years. It's now considered an ESP gun. Designed for fighting, it is so shootable it fits in well with the light-kicking "target pistols." The controversial old squeeze cocker is an exquisitely shootable gun. Not So Enhanced

I'm seeing more guys shooting their Glock 34s--perhaps the dominant model in Stock class right now--in ESP for an unusual reason. Hotter loads award no bonus points, and they'll slow the shooter in a game where time is important. You'll do the potential winner a favor by selling him a 9mm. Stock autos are by far the most popular guns in IDPA. There are good reasons why. There are five handgun categories in IDPA. Single-action .45 autos are called Custom Defense Pistols (CDP). The same cocked-and-locked style in 9mm through .40 S&W is known as Enhanced Service Pistol (ESP). A wheel-gun will compete in Stock Service Revolver (SSR) if it is loaded with speedloaders, and Enhanced Service Revolver (ESR) if it is fed with moon clips. However, the 800-pound gorilla in the five IDPA handgun categories is Stock Service Pistol (SSP). It is by far the most densely populated of the "gun classes." If your gun is double action for every shot--and, under IDPA rules, that includes the Glock but not the Springfield Armory XD, which is mechanically a single action--this is its natural home at IDPA. Authorized calibers range from 9mm Parabellum through .45 ACP. Caliber Choice Though you're welcome to run your larger caliber pistol, its greater recoil will slow you down. If you prefer a .40, .357 SIG, or .45 and are looking more for trophies than for the training experience, it makes sense to handload down to the SSP power floor of 125,000 (determined by multiplying bullet weight in grains by velocity in feet per second). If your gun will run with reduced loads, the larger diameter bullet will occasionally cut the scoring line and give you another point or two, turning a near miss into a better score. Bear in mind a big advantage of SSP class is you're allowed to have 11 rounds in the gun, as in ESP class. In CDP, the max is nine rounds, and it's six in either of the revolver classes. If you're going for overall top score in a class like High Lawman, High Female, or High Senior, this can save a few time-consuming reloads over the course of a many-stage tournament. Another reason why the SSP category is so popular. The Winning Guns A CZ or Taurus starting in double-action mode can win in SSP, and so can any quality DA auto from the HK USP to the Ruger. However, the guns spending the most time in the overall winner's circle are Glock, Beretta and Smith & Wesson 9mms. The Glock is overwhelmingly the most popular. This partly reflects the gun's huge popularity in the real world of concealed carry and law enforcement, because so many competitors shoot IDPA for its original, intended purpose of building skills with sidearms worn for self-defense. However, the Glock's soft recoil and consistent, easy trigger pull from first shot to last are attributes appreciated as much by "gamesmen" as by "martial artists." If you're buying a Glock just for IDPA, you'll want the G34, a 9mm with 5.3" barrel. David Sevigny has dominated IDPA with one of these for years. Many find themselves just as well served with the 4.5"-barreled Glock 17, which has also won its share of IDPA matches with overall top score. The Beretta 92 seems to be the second most popular among consistent winners, especially in its factory Elite format or when tuned by Ernest Langdon. Ernest for many years was the overall guy to beat in IDPA, before mothballing his Berettas and taking a job with Smith & Wesson. David Olhassa and many others have shot their way to fame with Langdon Berettas. Sweet triggers, soft recoil, great accuracy, and outstanding reliability are at work for them. Personally, I've won a higher percentage of IDPA matches with my Langdon-tuned 92G than with any other auto pistol, including my only "down zero" match, with no shots outside the 8" center circle of the target in the entire tournament. The Smith & Wesson TDA 9mm, particularly the splendid Performance Center version of the Model 5906, has won a disproportionate number of IDPA championships in the hands of masters like Tom Yost. The PC 5906 delivers honest 1" groups at 25 yards, has ridiculously soft recoil thanks to its all-steel construction (just barely within the IDPA weight limit), and its 1/10" trigger reset allows very fast follow-up shots. The SIG is also a fine 9mm, though hampered slightly by a longer trigger reset than some others in its class. I had the good fortune recently to catch a First Master SSP out of a state shoot where I used a box-stock P226. Don't neglect true double-action-only autos. Mike Benedict became one of the first SSP Masters with a police-trade Beretta 96D in .40, and World IPSC Champ Todd Jarrett has won many an SSP National title and overall high score with his ParaOrdnance LDA in Content provided in partnership withMost Recent Sports PublicationsWorld's Richest Women: Oprah NOT on T ... Most of IDPA champion shooters reload, but a surprising number of IDPA shooters began shooting the competition as "pistol packers," instead of "shooting hobbyists." They haven't yet gotten into reloading. Plan A: Sell them a reloading setup. Plan B: Keep lots of generic ammo on hand. The 9mm ball, 147-grain subsonic seems to kick more softly than standard 115-grain and 124-grain FMJ. In .38 Special, about the only bulk-sale practice load that will make the power factor for SSR--and at that, sometimes barely--seems to be CCI Lawman 158-grain P with jacketed truncated cone bullet. Safariland Camp III speedloaders are allowed in IDPA, despite rumors to the contrary. They provide the fastest reload for any revolver that isn't built for moon clips. Dave Elderton's Ky-Tac and Tim Wegner's Blade-Tech make fine concealment-style speedloader carriers and magazine pouches for IDPA shooting. These companies also make two of the finest Kydex holsters. They are so practical, so fast, and so secure that each has practically a cult following in IDPA. Coming on fast in the IDPA (and practical street) holster market are Fobus with their thermo-plastic scabbard, and Michaels of Oregon with their new bargain Kydex holsters. Both work! Ammunition Only a few companies make loads especially for IDPA. Triton's High Master and Competitor lines rule here. The company's 9mm, .40 and .45 rounds are loaded down to barely make the power limits. They run guns just fine while reducing recoil. Accuracy is tremendous. While Triton is the leader in IDPA specialty ammo, any 9mm, .40 or .45 ACP generic training hardball will do. I've seen Black Hills, CCI Blazer, Federal American Eagle, RemUMC Sellier & Bellot, and Winchester USA brands all win IDPA awards. Concerning ammunition, it's important to sell shooters ammunition that has sufficient power. IDPA demands that the shooter's rounds make the power floor or the shooter is disqualified. If a customer buys ammo from you in good faith that results in his disqualification, you know you've lost repeat business. A Win-Win IDPA is hot. Shooters who compete in matches want the hardware that gives them the winning edge. Fortunately, IDPA guns and gear sell to other customers as well.
