CHAPTER 1 IntroductionThis section provides an introduction to Wittwin.

Wittwin ACI Server

Display Online Help

Wittwin ACI Server

Wittwin is an ACI Server that records and streams video.

Wittwin receives compressed video, audio, and metadata from the Video Input Service (VIS). Wittwin can simultaneously write the video to circular buffers (storage areas on disk), and stream both the live input and recorded data to other applications.

In response to requests from other applications, Wittwin can save video from a circular buffer to a file, and also stream this content. Wittwin can also record still images sent from a Video Stream Distributor (VSD) ACI Server.

Wittwin ACI Server User Guide 13

Page 14: IDOL Video Wittwin ACI Server 8.1 User Guideh30359. Distribution Suite... · ... File System Connector for Netware, File System Connector, FileNet ... Configure the Storage Pool Configuration

Chapter 1 Introduction

14

Video Sources and Logical CamerasWittwin records video, audio, and metadata through logical cameras.

A logical camera takes data from the input, processes the data, and writes it to a circular buffer. You can customize each logical camera to perform a specific task. For example, event recording logical cameras record only when an alarm is triggered by an analytics component such as iSAS. When no alarms occur, the video is discarded.

You can configure multiple logical cameras for each video input. The benefit of having multiple logical cameras is that you can save the video from each camera in a separate buffer. Multiple logical cameras are often used for HP Surveillance setups.

In Figure 1, a single video input maps to two logical cameras. The Continuous Recording camera records continuously. The Event Recording camera records data only when an event occurs (for example when an alarm is triggered by an analytics component such as iSAS or ANPR).

You can also use a logical camera to capture video frames sent from analytics components (such as Commander, iSAS, or Face Recognition), and write these frames to a circular buffer. In this scenario, the logical camera does not take data from the video source.

Figure 1 A single input and multiple logical cameras

Wittwin ACI Server

If you are using Wittwin within an IDOL Video setup, it is unlikely that you need multiple logical cameras. Most IDOL Video setups require only continuous recording. It is possible to disable two of the three logical cameras and the remaining camera can be configured for continuous recording.

Storage BuffersWittwin records data to circular buffers (storage areas on disk, where the oldest data in the buffer is discarded to make space for new data). You set the size of each buffer, in megabytes, which determines how long content is stored.

If you are using a system which requires multiple Wittwin ACI Servers, they can be configured to use a shared storage pool.

Figure 2 Using a shared storage pool for Wittwin recordings

With a shared storage pool, any Wittwin ACI Server can access any storage buffer. Recordings can be stored centrally and can be accessed by any Wittwin. This allows requests to be distributed between multiple Wittwin ACI Servers.

16

Send Video to Other ComponentsYou can configure Wittwin to stream data to other Autonomy components. Wittwin supports Real-time Transport Protocol (RTP), RTP Control Protocol (RTCP), User Datagram Protocol (UDP), both multicast and unicast. Wittwin is compatible with media players which conform to these protocols, such as VLC and Quicktime, as well as Virage Media Player.

Configure Wittwin

Wittwin is configured by editing the following configuration files and databases:

Wittwin ACI Server configuration file. Each Wittwin has a configuration file that specifies a unique identifier for the Wittwin ACI Server, and the location of the storage pool configuration file.

Storage Pool configuration file. The Storage Pool configuration file specifies the location of a storage database for each Wittwin ACI Server. The unique identifier of each Wittwin ACI Server is mapped to the location of the storage database for that server.

Storage Database. The Storage Database is an SQLite database which defines the recording settings, including:

The logical cameras to use to record the video.

The location and size of the circular buffers where the data is stored.

The use of the storage pool configuration file means that every Wittwin ACI Server can access its own storage database, and read the storage database of other Wittwin ACI servers. This means that any Wittwin can read any circular buffer and extract data written to disk by another Wittwin.

To configure Wittwin, complete the following procedures:

Configure a Wittwin ACI Server

Configure the Storage Pool Configuration File

Configure the Recording Settings in the Storage Database

NOTE If you are using a single Wittwin, you do not need to modify the configuration file or storage pool configuration file.

The default configuration file points to the storage pool configuration file that is installed in the Wittwin installation directory (storagepool.cfg). This file points to the storage database (SystemConfDB.dbs) in the same folder.

IMPORTANT If your storage pool is on another machine on the network, you must ensure that Wittwin can access that machine.

Configure Wittwin

Configure the Storage Pool Configuration FileThe storage pool configuration file specifies the location of a storage database for each of your Wittwin ACI Servers.

A storage pool configuration file (storagepool.cfg) is installed in the Wittwin installation folder. You can use this file as a template to build your own configuration.

An example storage pool configuration file might look like this:

STORAGE_POOL_COUNT=2StorageID= wittwinserver01;DBLOCATION= \\databases\Virage1;StorageID= wittwinserver02;DBLOCATION= \\databases\Virage2;

where,

In this example:

wittwinserver01 loads the SystemConfDB.dbs database from\\databases\Virage1.

wittwinserver02 loads the SystemConfDB.dbs database from\\databases\Virage2.

If either Wittwin needs to read data from a circular buffer, they can read the storage database of the other Wittwin.

Configure the Recording Settings in the Storage DatabaseThe Storage Database is an SQLite database that specifies the recording settings for a Wittwin ACI Server (for example, the number of logical cameras to use, the settings for each logical camera, and the size and location of the circular buffers).

To modify the settings stored in the database, you can use a command-line window or the SQLite manager.

The settings that are most frequently changed are:

Number of inputs. The default storage database can be used with up to 16 video inputs. You cannot set the number of inputs to be larger than 16.

update WITTWIN_SYSTEM_TABLE set NoOfPhysicalCameras=8;

For information about changing the database to recognise up to 32 or 64 inputs, see “Configure the Number of Available Inputs” on page 23.

Number of logical cameras. Video inputs can map to one or multiple logical cameras. For example, to map one logical camera to each video input:

update WITTWIN_SYSTEM_TABLE set NoOfLogicalCameras=NoOfPhysicalCameras;

Mapping of the logical cameras to storage areas. Multiple logical cameras can use the same storage area, or one logical camera can use its own storage area. To set all logical cameras to use the same storage area:

update WITTWIN_LOGICAL_CAMERA_TABLE set StorageArea=0;

Storage area sizes. Storage areas are circular buffers. The size required is dependant on the bitrate of the video input. For example,

update WITTWIN_SYSTEM_STORAGE_TABLE set StorageAreaSizeinMB=10000;

Index path. The path where the index files are stored. The index files contain the Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) and filename of the videos for retrieval. For example,

update WITTWIN_SYSTEM_STORAGE_TABLE set INDEX_LOCATION='\\storageServer\storageFolder\area0' where StorageAreaIndex=0;

Video path. The path where the video and audio files are stored. For example,

NOTE The default Storage Database (SystemConfDB.dbs) can be used with up to 16 video inputs. If you need to record more than 16 inputs, see “Configure the Number of Available Inputs” on page 23.

Many Logical Cameras to One Storage AreaThis example shows how to configure many logical cameras to write data to one storage area. This means that all the data from the logical cameras is written at once, reducing the number of times data is recorded to the physical hard drive of the storage area.

This setup can be used when all inputs are to be recorded for the same duration (the size of the storage area defines the buffer length).

To set up a many-to-one mapping

1. In the Wittwin installation folder, open the SystemConfDB.dbs database with the sqlite.exe utility.

A command-line window opens.

2. Set the number of inputs. Using the default database, you can have up to 16 inputs:

update WITTWIN_SYSTEM_TABLE set NoOfPhysicalCameras=8;

3. Set the number of logical cameras to be the same as inputs. This means that each input has one logical camera.

update WITTWIN_SYSTEM_TABLE set NoOfLogicalCameras=NoOfPhysicalCameras;

4. Set the number of circular buffer storage areas.

update WITTWIN_SYSTEM_TABLE set NoOfStorageAreas=1;

5. Map the logical cameras to the storage area.

6. Set the size of the storage area (in megabytes)

update WITTWIN_SYSTEM_STORAGE_TABLE set StorageAreaSizeinMB=10000;

7. Set the index location of the storage area.

update WITTWIN_SYSTEM_STORAGE_TABLE set INDEX_LOCATION='\\storageServer\storageFolder\area0';

8. Set the disk (video file) path. This can be different to the index location.

update WITTWIN_SYSTEM_STORAGE_DISKS_TABLE set DiskPath='\\storageServer\storageFolder\area0' where StorageAreaIndex=0;

One Logical Camera to One Storage AreaThis example shows how to configure one storage area for every logical camera. This configuration is useful when you have only one input per Wittwin that consists of high-quality video. The input from that Wittwin is then saved to one location, which may be a disk of its own or may be a storage pool in a section dedicated to that Wittwin.

To set up a one-to-one mapping

1. In the Wittwin installation folder, open the SystemConfDB.dbs database with the sqlite.exe utility.

A command-line window opens.

2. Set the number of inputs. Using the default database, you can have up to 16 inputs:

update WITTWIN_SYSTEM_TABLE set NoOfPhysicalCameras=4;

3. Set the number of logical cameras to be the same as inputs. This means that each input has one logical camera.

update WITTWIN_SYSTEM_TABLE set NoOfLogicalCameras=NoOfPhysicalCameras;

4. Set the number of circular buffer storage areas to be the same as the number of logical cameras.

5. Assign each logical camera to exactly one storage area, ensuring a one-to-one mapping.

update WITTWIN_LOGICAL_CAMERA_TABLE set StorageArea=LogicalCameraNo;

6. Insert new storage areas into the database. The database must have NoOfStorageAreas entries. Note that two storage areas exist by default so two more must be added.

The database entry fields are as follows:

0, (This is always zero)

storageAreaNumber,

'DISKstorageAreaNumber’,

storageAreaSize, (in megabytes)

NoOfDisks

eventsDatabase, (set to blank)

filepath_to_StorageArea,

memoryAllocation,

0 (This is always zero)

NOTE The storage areas are numbered starting from zero. So the first storage area is number 0, the second storage area is 1, and so on.

7. Set the index location for the default two storage areas (where N is the number of the storage area, starting from zero).

update WITTWIN_SYSTEM_STORAGE_TABLE set INDEX_LOCATION='\\storageServer\storageFolder\areaN';

8. Set the disk (video file) path for the two default storage area entries.

update WITTWIN_SYSTEM_STORAGE_DISKS_TABLE set DiskPath='\\storageServer\storageFolder\areaN' where StorageAreaIndex=N;

9. Decrease the memory allocation for the storage areas. The MemAlloc value is the power of two, so a MemAlloc=23 is 223 bytes, or 8MB.

update WITTWIN_SYSTEM_STORAGE_TABLE set MemAlloc=23;

Event Recording ExampleThis example shows how to configure one background storage (continuous recording) camera and one event-triggered storage camera for each physical camera (video input).

This example is for a 16-camera configuration and makes use of the default configuration. By default, the storage database is configured with logical cameras 0-15 and 16-31 mapped to physical cameras 0-15.

This example uses two storage areas, the first for the background recordings, and the second, larger, area for event-triggered recordings. By default there are two storage areas, so we only need to modify the locations and size.

To modify the settings in the database

1. In the Wittwin installation folder, open the SystemConfDB.dbs database with the sqlite.exe utility.

A command-line window opens.

2. Reduce the number of Logical Cameras from the default of 48 to 32:

update WITTWIN_SYSTEM_TABLE set NoOfLogicalCameras=32;

3. Convert the video motion detect (VMD) logical cameras in the default configuration to storage logical cameras:

update WITTWIN_LOGICAL_CAMERA_TABLE set LogicalCameraType='STORAGE' where LogicalCameraNo>15;

4. Set the size, index location, and path of the continuous recording storage area:

update WITTWIN_SYSTEM_STORAGE_TABLE set StorageAreaSizeinMB=10000 where StorageAreaIndex=0;

update WITTWIN_SYSTEM_STORAGE_TABLE set INDEX_LOCATION='\\storageServer\storageFolder\background' where StorageAreaIndex=0;

update WITTWIN_SYSTEM_STORAGE_DISKS_TABLE set DiskPath='\\storageServer\storageFolder\background' where StorageAreaIndex=0;

5. Set the size, index location and the path of the event recording storage area:

update WITTWIN_SYSTEM_STORAGE_TABLE set StorageAreaSizeinMB=1000000 where StorageAreaIndex=1;

update WITTWIN_SYSTEM_STORAGE_TABLE set INDEX_LOCATION='\\storageServer\storageFolder\events' where StorageAreaIndex=1;

update WITTWIN_SYSTEM_STORAGE_DISKS_TABLE set DiskPath='\\storageServer\storageFolder\events' where StorageAreaIndex=1;

6. Disable background recording for logical cameras 16-31:

update WITTWIN_LOGICAL_CAMERA_HOURLY_SETTINGS_TABLE set Enabled=0 where LogicalCameraNo>15;

7. Map this set of logical cameras (cameras 16-31) to the events storage area:

update WITTWIN_LOGICAL_CAMERA_TABLE set StorageArea=1 where LogicalCameraNo>15;

8. (Optional) If pre-event recording is required for the event-triggered cameras, complete the following steps:

a. Enable pre-event recording:

update WITTWIN_LOGICAL_CAMERA_TABLE set PreEventEnabled=1 where LogicalCameraNo>15;

b. You can choose the amount of video that is held in Wittwin’s memory for pre-event recording. For example, to save 30 seconds of video in memory:

update WITTWIN_LOGICAL_CAMERA_TABLE set PreEventDurationinSeconds=30;

c. (Optional) To change the frame rate of the video that is held in memory for pre-event recording, use the following command. This example saves the video in memory at 5 frames per second. To modify the frame rate, you must have some knowledge of the input video stream, because reduced frame rates work only with I frames / IDRs.

update WITTWIN_LOGICAL_CAMERA_TABLE set PreEventCaptureRateFPS=5;

Event Recording - Record Still Images from AnalyticsThis example shows how to configure one background storage camera and one event-triggered storage camera per physical camera, plus one storage camera to receive still images of the event sent from analytics components (such as Face Recognition, ANPR, or iSAS).

NOTE The amount of video that is actually saved during pre-event recording depends on the event that is triggered. This is configured in the analytics component (for example iSAS).

The logical camera that receives still images from the analytics components must be configured so that it does not process any video from the physical camera (the video input).

This example is for a 16 camera configuration and makes use of the default configuration. By default, the database is configured with logical cameras 0-15, 16-31 and 32-47 mapped to physical cameras 0-15. (Logical cameras 0, 16, and 32 are mapped to physical camera 0, logical cameras 1,17, and 33 are mapped to physical camera 1, and so on).

This example uses two storage areas, the first for the background recordings, and the second, larger, area for event-triggered recordings and the still images. By default there are two storage areas, so we only need to modify their locations and size.

1. In the Wittwin installation folder, open the SystemConfDB.dbs database with the sqlite.exe utility.

A command-line window opens.

2. Convert the video motion detect (VMD) logical cameras in the default configuration to storage logical cameras, to store events and the still images from the analytics components.

update WITTWIN_LOGICAL_CAMERA_TABLE set LogicalCameraType='STORAGE' where LogicalCameraNo>15;

3. Set the size, index location and the disk (video file) path of the background storage area:

Customize Logging

The default folder for Wittwin log files is C:\Autonomy\WittwinAciServer\logs\. By default, Wittwin generates the following log files:

You can customize logging by modifying the logging configuration parameters in the Wittwin configuration file.

To customize logging

1. Open the Wittwin configuration file in a text editor.

2. Find the [Logging] section. (If the configuration file does not contain a [Logging] section, create one).

3. Under the [Logging] section heading, create a list of the log streams you want to set up using the format N=LogStreamName. List the log streams in consecutive order, starting from 0 (zero). For example:

[Logging]0=ApplicationLogStream1=ActionLogStream

4. Create a new section for each of the log streams you defined. Each section must have the same name as the log stream. For example:

[ApplicationLogStream][ActionLogStream]

5. Specify the settings you want to apply to each log stream in the appropriate section. You can specify the type of logging to perform (for example, full logging), whether to display log messages on the console, the maximum size of log files, and so on. For example:

[ApplicationLogStream]

action.log Logs actions and related messages.

application.log Logs application messages.

stream.log Logs all messages related to streaming.
