Report Cover

Redwing Slough State Natural Area is located in North Eastern Illinois in Lake County, one of the fastest urbanizing regions in the country. The Illinois Department of Natural Resources has purchased 996 acres at Redwing Slough.

It is considered a nationally significant wetland by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. It provides habitat for nine State endangered or threatened species, as well as providing habitat for large numbers of waterfowl during the spring and fall migration seasons. The site is an emergent marsh Awith good hemi-marsh conditions@; the optimal habitat for many wetland dependent species.

Nine State endangered or threatened bird species have been documented at Redwing Slough including the black tern, common moorhen, least bittern, sandhill crane, and yellow-headed blackbird. Other listed species using the site for foraging or loafing include black-crowned night heron and Forster=s tern. Other nesting species are typical marsh avifauna, including swamp sparrow, mallard, common yellowthroat, yellow warbler, willow flycatcher and marsh wren. Historic aerial photographs indicate populations of large muskrat and beaver are active within the complex, as evidenced by intermittent blockage of the water control structures. Deer Lake supports a diverse game fish population, including: largemouth bass, bluegill, black crappie, northern pike, and golden shiner.

The parcels pictured were purchased with Natural Areas Acquisition Funds.

Equal opportunity to participate in programs of the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) and those funded by the U.S.Fish and Wildlife Service and other agencies is available to all individuals regardless of race, sex, national origin, disability, age, religion or other non-merit factors.
