Identifying Characters in a Story
A Kindergarten Lesson PlanBy Allison Brown
The Standard That Applies
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.K.3 With prompting and support, identify characters, settings, and major events in a story.
What You Will Do with Your Class
You will read the class 5 very short stories with characters who are varied during a guided reading lesson.
After this you will discuss with the class (as a whole) the stories, what occurred in them, the setting, and the characters.
Activity
The class will take turns coming up to the Smart Board and matching pictures of different story settings with the corresponding characters
*Note* While doing this you should encourage the involvement of the entire class by either A) Have the class “help” the student at the board
by making suggestionsB) Have worksheets at each child's desk of the
activity that is going on at the board so they can draw a line and match the characters with their setting on their own papers.

Assessment
Assessment would be A) Another matching worksheet that
they had to complete alone.B) A worksheet that had pictures of
settings and the students have to list 3 POSSIBLE characters that would fit into that story setting and also explain why they chose those characters.
