HOW Idea maps are used to unlock and organize new ideas and concepts visually. They can also be used to enhance an existing idea. When complete an idea map will resemble a web-like structure of your concepts and ideas connected to a central topic.

To create an idea map: 2

1)Determine the topic or focus of your thinking. For example, how to inform San Diego residents about water conservation. Your topic should only be a few words. 2)Write the topic in the center of the page in bold letters and circle it. 3)Write what comes to mind. As you create ideas, draw lines from the main topic. Be sure to keep these to a few words. Write Clearly.4)Start to branch out from your topic and from one thought to the next. Draw lines to connect thoughts to create connections between ideas and thinking. Number ideas to stay organized.5)Add new branches for new ideas.6)Repeat until all ideas are listed.7)When finished, review the connections and try to relate and organize your ideas

TIPS• No editing or censorship allowed. • Keep your ideas flowing. • If you get stuck, walk away and come back or sleep on it.• Add more paper if needed.• Pictures are worth a 1000 words. • Colors connect ideas.
