Kangaroos saved fromslaughter in AustraliaIn August, compassion won theday in Australia. Thanks to animmense outpouring of helpfrom our dedicated supporters, one hundred kangaroos andtheir baby joeys were savedfrom being made into steaks andburgers, shoes and belts. Withour partners at The AustralianSociety for Kangaroos, weensured these shy and gentlemarsupials were saved fromhunters’ guns.

Thousands of youngpeople educated incompassionWhile we are advancingpositive change for animalstoday, our cutting-edgeprograms are ensuring that the

beings, and being empoweredto end the suffering of farmedanimals through a healthful anddelicious vegan diet.

Sickening experiments on pregnant wild horseshaltedThe U.S. government agency, theBureau of Land Management, finally backed down on itsgruesome and dangerous planto conduct sterilizationexperiments on over 200 wildmares in Oregon. It would havebeen a great victory for thehorses and thousands of InDefense of Animals supportersif it were not for the unveiling ofa devastating proposal to killmore than half of America’s wildmustangs. We are spearheadingefforts to ensure these Americanicons do not come to harm, andto stop horsemeat slaughter byback-door methods.

Working with South Koreanactivists, we were able to save fivedogs from the brink of death from the dog meat trade. Thanks to your support, we were able tosave an additional two dogs afterthe initial rescue! All seven dogsescaped awful deaths to make anepic 7,000 mile long journey fromSouth Korea to Hope Animal

Sanctuary in Mississippi. Kurt,Paul and Valencia, three of theoriginal Slaughterhouse Five, have now been adopted and arenow enjoying a new lease on life.

Heartworm positive dogs given a new lease on life31 dogs living at our HopeAnimal Sanctuary in Mississippistarted the year heartwormpositive. The often-lethalparasite works its way throughthe chambers of dogs’ heartsand into the arteries of theirlungs, killing the poor victims as their hearts struggle andeventually fail to meet theirbodies’ need for blood. Thanksto your generosity, all 31 dogshave been successfully treated, and many are now enjoying anew lease on life.Dogs rescued from

Historic elephant protection measures passedIn Defense of Animals has long been achampion for elephants, so we are pleased that 2016 brought a significant win in August, as Governor Jerry Brown signed a historic law toprotect captive elephants from brutal bullhook abuse in California. The new law is an important step in the protection of elephants and we thank you, our committed supporters for making your voices heard to helppass this crucial legislation.

Every day, more people realizethat the horror endured byanimals on farms is the every-daynorm, not the exception. Abusivemega-animal industries areattempting to silence activistswho expose animal cruelty byproposing “ag-gag” laws that

restrict freedom of speech.Thousands of In Defense ofAnimals supporters floodedAustralia’s lawmakers to speakout on behalf of animals. In May,our international voice won out,and this dastardly attempt tocover up animal cruelty failed.
