SIMPLE AND COMPOUND SENTENCES A simple sentence has one independent clause

(what is an independent clause?)

Courtesy is often nothing more than a highly developed sense of fair play.

A compound sentence has two or more independent clauses usually joined by a comma and a coordinating conjunction (FANBOYS)

COMPOUND SENTENCES

They are formed by joining two independent clauses with a comma and a coordinating conjunction (F-A-N-B-O-Y-S)

COMPLEX SENTENCES It has a dependent clause and one or more

independent clauses.

The dependent clause is introduced by a subordinating conjunction (because, although, since, if, whenever, even though, so that, in that).

The subordinating conjunction explains the relationship between the two clauses.

If the dependent clause starts the sentence, use a comma to separate the both clauses.
