ICDL 2010 Exam – Grade 8 Student’s Guide

Advanced QuestionsMany questions are written to test your comprehension of English expression. Here are some examples. Read each question very carefully. Watch for information on which method to use – menu item, toolbar button or keyboard shortcut.

Q. Which of the following best describes the action, change the zoom view to page width?

Viewing text, margin to margin Viewing typed text, page edge to page edge Viewing typed text, 100% zoom Viewing typed text by the Whole Page

The answer is highlighted in yellow. The reason is because “page width” means from one edge of the paper to the other edge.

Q. The Word feature that best describes advancing the insertion point to a preset line position or to align columns is...

Indentation Tab Stop Alignment Spacing

The answer is highlighted in yellow. Pressing the Tab key advances your cursor to the next preset Tab Stop and is also used to align columns. “Indentation” is the process of advancing the insertion point to the preset Indent <arker. As you can see, it’s very important to read the question carefully.

Q. This feature is used to indent text to a preset horizontal position for the current line

Indentation Tab Stop Alignment Spacing

The answer is highlighted in yellow. This is similar to the last question, but this time it uses the word “indent”, which is your key to the answer.

Q. Inserting the word, Freecall, at the current insertion point will...

Replace text to the left of the insertion point Insert text to the left of the insertion point Insert text to the right of the insertion point Replace text to the right of the insertion point

Page 7: ict.channelsteve.comict.channelsteve.com/.../04/ICDL-2010-Exam-Study-Gui… · Web viewict.channelsteve.com

ICDL 2010 Exam – Grade 8 Student’s Guide

The answer is highlighted in yellow. This question requires an understanding of the key words – insert, “to the left” and “insertion point”. When you start to type, your text will be inserted into the document at the current insertion point.

Q. You want to insert text at the current insertion point. Which of the below applies?

The new text will automatically merge to the 2nd cell of the current row The new text will automatically wrap within the current cell The new text will automatically extend the cell width to fit the text The new text will be automatically truncated when the maximum cell width is reached

The answer is highlighted in yellow. A cell is one box within the table. The default behaviour for a cell is that the text wraps once you reach the end of the cell.

Q. A form document and a data document are required to successfully generate which of the above Word functions?

Table of Contents Mail Merge Document Index Table of Authorities

The answer is highlighted in yellow. A mail merge combines a letter (form) with some data to create letters for multiple recipients.

Q. Before final output of your Word document, which of the above proofing activities would be most beneficial?

Document Layout Consistent Text Styles Spelling and Grammar Check All of the above

The answer is highlighted in yellow. It is important to proof-read your document to ensure it is completely ready for others to read. You should check that the layout (margins, orientation and paper size) is correct, that the fonts and text styles are consistent, and that spelling and grammar are correct.

ICDL 2010 Exam – Grade 8 Student’s Guide

Basic QuestionsMany of the questions will be quite simple. They will ask you to choose the correct menu item, toolbar, or keyboard shortcut to perform basic functions.

Revision Hints & Tips:

Learn the functions accessed from the File | Page Setup menu. Learn the functions of the main toolbar buttons Review all of the functions, and learn their names, within the Drawing Toolbar. This is used for

quite a few questions. Note: Before choosing the AutoShapes button as your answer, look at the rest of the available buttons to see if there is a more direct way of answering the question. For example, a single-headed arrow can be added by using the Arrow button instead of clicking on AutoShapes.

Learn the functions of the keyboard shortcuts. Remember that “Enter” (also known as “Return”) is a keyboard shortcut – it creates a new blank line at the current insertion point, and it also adds the next item to a bulleted list. “Delete” is also the answer to some questions where you need to remove an object (e.g. removing a box in an Organisation Chart).

Remember that “move” means to cut the text or object first, then paste. The answer to questions asking you to move objects will be to use either the Cut button, Edit | Cut menu, or Ctrl-X.

Review the many uses of the Task Pane on the right of the screen. This is used quite a lot in Powerpoint and is used to answer a number of questions in the exam.

o New presentationo Slide Designo Slide Layouto Slide Transition

Remember that adding notes to a slide is as simple as clicking in the Notes Pane under the slide. Print more than one copy by using the File |Print menu. Print a single copy with the default settings by using the Print button on the toolbar.

ICDL 2010 Exam – Grade 8 Student’s Guide

Adding an image, organization chart or other object is often as simple as double-clicking on the slide layout presented in the question. Unless the question asks you to use a toolbar or menu the answer may be on the actual slide itself.

Advanced Questions

Many questions are written to test your comprehension of English expression. Here are some examples. Read each question very carefully. Watch for information on which method to use – menu item, toolbar button or keyboard shortcut.

Some questions will give you some initial information which may confuse you, then ask the actual question. For example:

Q. You need to change the font colour to follow the title text colour scheme. Use the appropriate toolbar button that instructs PowerPoint to change the font colour.

The first sentence is not necessary in this case, and may confuse you by talking about the “title text colour scheme”. The actual instruction in the question is to use a toolbar button that changes font colour. Whilst it is important to read all of a question, be careful not to be distracted from the actual instruction.

Page 19: ict.channelsteve.comict.channelsteve.com/.../04/ICDL-2010-Exam-Study-Gui… · Web viewict.channelsteve.com

ICDL 2010 Exam – Grade 8 Student’s Guide

Q. You need to change the fill colour of the drawn object to follow the title text scheme-colour. Use the appropriate menu item or toolbar button that instructs PowerPoint to do this.

The answer is to click the fill colour button in the Drawing Toolbar.

Q. You are required to add a new organisational chart slide. Use the appropriate action (menu item, toolbar button, or keyboard shortcut) that instructs Powerpoint to add a new slide.

A tricky question if we don’t read it correctly. The first sentence is designed to make you think too much, and might make you incorrectly choose Insert | Chart. The second sentence is the actual question. The correct answer is to click the New Slide button, or select Insert | New Slide from the menu.

Q. You need to apply the Cliffs design template to the current presentation. Which of the following would be used to do this?

Format menu, Slide Layout Format menu, Object Format menu, Slide Background Format menu, Slide Design

The answer is highlighted in yellow. Using a process of elimination, and matching keywords, we can see that the key question word “design” is repeated in the answer. Design is the look and feel, Layout is the placement of objects.

Q. The task requires you to replace existing text. Replace the word “category” with the word “hyperlink”. Which of the following responses best describes how to accomplish this?

Select the text category then choose Edit Text from the Edit menu Select the text category then type the replacement text hyperlink Select the text hyperlink then type the replacement text category Select the text category then choose Insert Text from the Edit menu

The answer is highlighted in yellow. Replacing text is performed by selecting the text you want to change, and then beginning to type the new text.

Page 20: ict.channelsteve.comict.channelsteve.com/.../04/ICDL-2010-Exam-Study-Gui… · Web viewict.channelsteve.com

ICDL 2010 Exam – Grade 8 Student’s Guide

Q. You need to resize a drawn object. Where would you click to resize the shape so the width does NOT span beyond the right border of the photo image.

A tough question to understand. First, focus on “resize”. As the question does not tell us an exact size, or mention a menu, we can assume we need to use the mouse to drag a handle. Next look at the conditions. We can’t span beyond (go past) the right border (edge) of the photo image. As you can see on screen, the drawn object already goes past the edge. We need to click on the right, middle, white handle to drag it back.

Q. You need to understand Powerpoint view modes. Which of the following views would you use to organise and develop the text content of your presentation?

Normal Sorter Outline Slide

The answer is highlighted in yellow – Normal. There is no such view as Outline. In fact, this is a pane shown in Normal view. The Sorter view is for quick general slide changes. There is no such view as Slide. It is called Slide Show view, this runs the actual slide show.

ICDL 2010 Exam – Grade 8 Student’s Guide

Q. Where would you click in slide sorter view to paste slide 15 so it appears as slide 14 in the presentation?

The question is asking you to swap slide 15 with slide 14. Therefore you need to paste the copied slide before slide 14 to insert it at that point.
