Service-Oriented Architectures

During its course of nearly four decades, softwareengineering has known several main evolutions regar-ding approaches to software development. Structuredprogramming gave way to the concept of objectorientation, which was followed by reuse-based pro-gramming. Today's current trend is clearly service-oriented. There is much question of service-orientedarchitecture, service-oriented information systems orWeb services, a fashion which has given birth to acro-nyms such as SOA, SOAP, SODA, UDDI and otherWDSL. This involves the linking in more or less loosemanner, at execution time, various services whose col-laboration allows solving a given problem. It is expec-ted from this approach a significant evolution of theway in which computer applications are designed, structured, implemented, deployed, and operated.

As is frequent in the field of computer engineering, that which is assumed to bring easiness brings also itsshare of complexity and other problems. This concernsrelevancy of languages used for describing long trans-actions, coordination between transactions, and reco-very from incidents as well as maintaining a constantquality of service in business exchanges in a heteroge-neous and loosely coupled environment.

Organized by the Center for Mastering Systems &Software (CMSL) of CNAM (Conservatoire National desArts et Métiers), under the sponsorship of CIGREF (ITClub of Large French Enterprises), the 18th edition ofthe ICSSEA Conference will be held in Paris fromNovember 29 to December 1, 2005. It aims at provi-ding a critical survey of the current status of tools, methods, and processes for elaborating software andsystems. However, lectures and discussions will beconducted with service-oriented architectures as aleitmotiv..
