Report from the President

International Consortium for Social Development is in good shape. Not only is our membership growing, but we are in preparation mode, big time, for the 17th International Biennial Symposium to be held in Dhaka, Bangladesh, January 3-7, 2010. The ICSD Executive Council and Board met during the CSWE Annual Program Meeting in San Antonio in November 2009. Angie Yuen, the new President of IASSW was able to join us for the meeting. Angie shared with us the activities that IASSW is involved with and the plans for the upcoming joint conference of IASSW, IFSW and ICSW in Hong Kong, June, 2010.

During the meeting in San Antonio, new Board officers were introduced. Several were not able to attend and they were missed. Gouthan Menon accepted the position of Secretary-General, Jay Gabbard the Associate Secretary-General for Membership, Jon Matsuoka, Chair, SDI Board of Managers, Mark Rodgers, Vice President for Public Relations and Communications, and Antoinette Lombard, Editor of the Newsletter. Reports were made by Karen Sowers, Treasurer; David Hollister, Associate Secretary-General for Regional Branches; Julie Miller-Cribbs, Vice President for Special Projects and Carol Williams, Director of Information Technology. Thank you all for your great work! Our journal, Social Development Issues, is doing well under the editorship of Joe Leung and the Chair of its Board of Managers, Jon Matsuoka. It remains the leading international journal focused on social development and is one of the primary means by which ICSD achieves its mission, along with the symposium. The support of schools that are Partners in the publishing of the journal makes it possible for ICSD to provide Social Development Issues to our members throughout the world, including those in economically less-developed countries. Due to the global economy, the number of publication partners has declined, and we are reaching out to our member schools to help us sustain this important journal. If you can be come a publication partner, please contact Lyceum Press.

Report from the President - continued

The planning for the 2011 17th Biennial Symposium in Dhaka, Bangladesh is going extremely well. The Co-Chairs of the Symposium Planning Committee, Golam Mathbor and Nazrul Islam are doing a fantastic job organizing the symposium. The symposium website is operating and the call for proposals is out. In January 2010, I had the opportunity to travel to Dhaka to participate in symposium planning. It was truly an outstanding and memorable experience. We were able to secure the Sonargaon Hotel as our symposium venue, meet with Nobel Peace Laureate and President of the Grameen Bank Professor Muhammad Yunus, who has agreed to be our keynote speaker, meet with Mr. Stefan Priesner, Country Director for the United National Development Program, who has also agreed to be a plenary speaker, and arrange three outstanding post-symposium tours for participants. The country is beautiful, the people gracious and hospitable, the culture diverse, and the food excellent. In addition to the usual features of the symposium, we are organizing a book drive to enhance the library at the University of Dhaka, Institute of Social Welfare and Research. We are asking all participants to bring two (or three) books with them to the symposium to enhance the library. Please help us! The ICSD’s website (www.icsd.info), continues to be a primary means of communicating with members of ICSD and of informing others about the organization. Our Chair of Information Technology, Carol Williams is continually updating our website. The ICSD Branches are expanding and offering wonderful programs for their regions. At our 16th Biennial Symposium in Monterrey, Mexico in July 2009, the Latin American Branch formed. Welcome and congratulations! The European Branch Symposium is hosting their 12th Biennial European Conference on Human Rights and Social Development – a Pathway to Sustainability from September 22-25, 2010 in Laesoe, Denmark. The Asia-Pacific Branch in partnership with the Department of Social Welfare, Seoul National University is hosting the conference on Vision of Social Development in the Globalized Asia: Commonality and Diversity in Seoul, Korea from November 10-12, 2010. Please check our website for more information. Last but not least, a big thank you to Frank Raymond for his great leadership of ICSD for the past several years. Frank is a hard act to follow, and I appreciate his willingness to be there when I need him and fill me in on all the details. ICSD would not be where it is today without leaders like Frank, Chuck Cowger Shanti Khinduka and others. What makes ICSD a wonderful organization is the commitment and passion of our members. I am so honored to serve as your President and grateful to all of you for the time and talent you contribute to promoting social development worldwide. Thank you for all you do and I look forward to seeing you in Dhaka in January. Don’t miss it! I promise the 17th Biennial International Symposium will be spectacular. Barbara Shank

“For those of you who are new to ICSD and have not experienced a symposium, you have missed a real treat. This is absolutely one of the best conferences you could ever attend. There is a collegiality and hospitality that is rare and generally non-existent at many meetings I go to. I haven’t ever attended a bad session. Presenters are prepared, passionate about their topics and welcome interaction. The international connections you make at ICSD translate into life-long personal and professional relationships. As I have after every symposium, I am looking forward to the next in 2011. Get your suitcases ready!”…

2010 ICSD – Asia Pacific Branch Conference 10 – 12 November

Seoul, Korea It is a great pleasure to invite you to the “2010 International Consortium for Social Development –Asia-Pacific Branch Conference. When ICSD-AP asked us to host the conference, our department thought that this could be a great opportunity for all Asian Countries to come together to discuss pressing issues on social development in Asia, exchange ideas on possible solutions, and share each country’s unique experiences and future visions of its own country, region, and Asia as a whole. While economic and social development in Asia has attracted international interest, it has also highlighted the need for academic and social exchange on social development. As a result, the major theme for this conference is “Vision on social development in the Globalised Asia: Commonality and Diversity”. The conference will provide a variety of venues including keynote speakers, plenary and concurrent sessions, pre-post conference workshops, and site visits. These venues wil be led by a diverse group of professionals who have great expertise in Asia’s social development. There will be ample opportunities for everyone to exchange ideas on the conference topics. Through this academic and professional exchange, we envision enhanced partnerships between countries to promote efficiency and effectiveness in Asia’s social development. 2010 ICSD – Biennial European Conference 22 -25 September

Laesoe, Denmark With the increasing social changes within the modern society we are confronted with the problem of finding strategies which respect fundamental moral and social values. Among these values, the question of human rights has become a pertinent one. The question is if human rights can provide us with new pathways to the understanding of the societal transformation process and to the steering of the development into a sustainable direction. Join us at the meeting of the European Branch of the ICSD at Laesoe, a small island in the Kattegat in Denmark, where challenges, issues and strategies will be discussed in the light of fundamental values considered as a way to sustainability. Aims and Objectives * To explore the ways that social and moral values can provide new standards to social development and inequality. * To discuss the role of the social workers in order to promote a better understanding of moral and social values in view of elaborating new strategies for the future.

For information about the conference, the location and how to reach Laesoe, please consult the official website of the conference:
