... blue sky, the warm sun. That is what we were expecting for our fashion photo shoot. We had picked the locations and everything was ready to go. Only ... the weather forecast was wrong. Twice ... and with a tight schedule there was no chance to re-schedule.

The solution? The Rotary Centre for the Arts in Kelowna! The unique building with its atrium, soaring glass walls and wonderful wood-work was the perfect venue for our shoot! Thanks again for the prompt help! And a big thank you to all who were involved in this project!

And we really, really want our own Vespa Scooter now!

What a great precursor to the boating season! Customers and enthusiasts alike gathered at Dockside Marine Center to enjoy some preseason fun. With a delightful menu pro-vided by Details Catering, all those attending had the op-portunity to taste a wide variety of delicious creations while sipping on their favourite cocktail or enjoying a beer.

Front and center were the boats! Dockside was showcasing some of the newest models for the season. Just out front was a decked out Sanger tournament boat with an awesome sound system and cool ambient lighting. Indoors the Harris pontoon boats were really demanding everyone’s attention, with so many amenities and comfortable loungers; we took the opportunity to relax with our drinks on the boat in the showroom.

Thinking about Selling your Business?

• You may be considering selling in the next year, or two or three;

• You may be selling right now but are unsure if your list price is correct;

• You may be considering expansion in the next year;• You may be intending to develop a business plan in

the next year; or• You just want to know the true value of your business.

by Steve Harvey & Nelson Bayford

WHAT`S YOUR BUSINESS WORTH?

There are a number of different methods used to establish the value of businesses in today’s marketplace dependant on the size, profitability and nature of the busi-

ness being evaluated. Ultimately, the value of a business will be determined by what a buyer is willing to pay for it. However, plac-ing a concrete value on the business will weed out unsuitable prospective buyers and specify what a buyer SHOULD pay for it.

EVERY business owner should know the market value of their business at all times. A Business Market Valu-ation shows what a business is worth and could in all probability, sell for at this moment. So, why is it important to know the market value of your business at all times?

A business valuation starts with examining the “prov-able” gross sales of a business, even before the cash flow is scrutinized. The “provable” sales refer to the

owner’s ability to substantiate the ac-tual revenue produced by the business

for instance, with tax re-turns.

A Financial Statement and a Profit and Loss Statement (“P & L”) can

be used, however, all numbers shown on the P&L must be corroborated one way or another. Why would this step be so important? Well, it is usually safe to say that the recent past is the best indication of the immediate future meaning that your business appears lucrative and therefore more desirable to buyers.

What is Cash Flow?Cash flow is your profit before taxes. In other words, it is what the owner is truly making from the business. Cash Flow is determined by taking the Net Profit or Loss from the tax returns then “adding back” to the Net Profit or Loss any non-essential, non-business related or paper expenses such as amortization, de-preciation and interest. There are additional permissible “add backs,” in-cluding one-time or payroll expenses for an employ-ee who is no longer with the business, just to use an example.

One of the most challenging aspects of trying to sell a business unassisted is being able to maintain one’s objectivity when it comes to determining the worth of our businesses.

Thoughts such as “it is what I need to retire on” or “it’s what I put into it” are not relevant factors for determining what a business is worth on the market at any given time. Most businesses are unrealistically overpriced the day they are listed because sellers in-variably have emotional ties to the business. Consequently, what a seller equates to its worth is not by any means the true value.

Here is what you DO NOT want to do...

Tell anyone that you are going to sell – confidential-ity is of the utmost importance at this time; Change the business models or daily operations; and/orTake cash out of the business that will be reflected in subsequent financial statements.

12 www.icon-okanagan.comICON OKANAGAN

Steve Harvey Nelson Bayford

Here is what you DO want to do...

Undertake a thorough review of the company books and corporate records ensuring that all are complete and up to date;Similarly, make sure that all tax returns and other gov-ernment filings and licenses have been completed, filed and are current. Arm yourself and be prepared to answer questions re-garding the financial history of the business, including the good periods and the not so good.

It doesn’t make any difference what you imagine your business is worth, or how much you want for it, and neither does it make any difference what your accoun-tant, banker, attorney, or best friend think. Only the marketplace will ultimately determine the true value of your business.

Steve Harvey is a Certified Business Broker and owner of “Business Finders.” He brings over 20 years of sales industry related experi-ence to the market place. His expertise crosses many fields in several industries. Having owned and managed businesses, Steve was on both sides of the franchise system.

2012 Bennington Q-SeriesIn-Style on the Water

Founded in 1997, Bennington Pontoon Boats has grown at an unprec-edented pace to become one of the largest manufacturers of pontoon boats in North America and has been honoured with more quality and satisfaction awards than any pontoon maker in the industry.

The Bennington 2575 QCW I/O The 2575 QCW I/O clearly shows what sets this Pontoon Boat apart from any other boat. Not only does it seat up to 13 people comfort-ably, so you can take the whole family and some friends out on the water without feeling cramped, it is

anything but a slow boat. With the powerful Merc 350 Mag Catalyzed engine it rocks! Tubing? Easy. Water skiing? Not a problem!

A pontoon boat really offers the best of all worlds; you can have performance, luxury and best of all lots of space in one well appointed package. Before you even start to think that pontoon boats are for older people have a look at all the cool features this barge comes with. Our Bennington 2575 was equipped with the very latest in technology, including an automotive in-spired console with a custom wheel with tilt, high performance snap-in carpet, diamond pillow-top interior cushions, an electric power top, a Sony M6 stereo with dash mounted remote, USB port and Kicker speakers, blue ice LED mood lighting, and super comfortable stern-facing loungers.

If there is a trend in boating it must be pontoon boats. Never before have we seen so many of the “party barges” on the lake, and our recent visit to the Kelowna Boat Show clearly showed why they are so popular.

Martin Motor Sports, who just opened their first location in the Okanagan in West Kelowna, took us out on a cruise on their luxury Bennington Q-Series ... and now we understand!

Ok, maybe it’s not really the boat of the stars ... but Supra’s flagship, the Launch 242 Worlds Edition, will quickly become the star of your family. Many consider it one of the best big family boats for the money, especially when you tell your kids they can all bring their friends ... because this boat accommodates up to 17 people! Yes, 17 people in a 24-foot luxury craft.

The walk-through bow design provides everyone on board plenty of room along with eliminating the need to stand on upholstery to get in and out of the boat. Seating is wide and luxurious with double-up convertible rear-facing seats. There’s also tons of storage space, two big insulated coolers, one under the steps and one under the port seat, a glove box and a stylish dash with VISION (Video Information System with Integrated Onboard Network). Among other cool features it gives the ability to save rider profiles so you can come back to your perfect wake every time!

The game is on when you start the 5.7L engine (and there’s a 6L option!) Did we mention that the 242 is the official tow boat of the WWA World Wakeboard Championships? For a reason ... as the 242 delivers massive performance. The V-Drive configuration and unique Supra hull provide a silky ride — even through chop. The prop is tucked well under the boat for extra safety in the water.

With all the built-in luxury and the options you get for the money – this wakeboard and wakesurf boat gets you everything you could ever ask for, performance, comfort and style! Interested? Just call the guys at Martin Motor Sports for more information.

t is needless to say that boat ownership comes with a wide variety of perks and living in the beautiful Okanagan valley it is very easy to take advantage of

those perks. With many picturesque lakes both within and surrounding the valley it is no wonder that so many locals and visitors alike are crazy about boating here.

Although boating is an incredible way to enjoy the beauty and weather in the Okanagan while having fun and spending quality time with family and friends, not everyone is fully equipped to deal with boat ownership effectively or properly.

Storage and maintenance are two major things that most pleasure craft owners rather leave to the profes-sionals. Realizing a need for this kind of service on a large scale Tow and Stow Dry Marina was established in August of 2010.

We had the pleasure of checking out the facility at this year’s open house and barbecue on June 9th.

Secure, indoor, heated storage for nearly 400 water-craft is just the tip of the iceberg at Tow and Stow, for your convenience your boat can be serviced, detailed, prepped for the water and even fueled with premium grade marine fuel onsite. All boats are accessible at all times, and after hours pick up can even be arranged. A comprehensive security system ensures that all boats and activities are monitored 24 hours a day and 7 days a week.

If you can’t make it down to grab your boat, valet ser-vice to all local marinas is also available so drop off and pickup of your boat is just a phone call away. And when you are short on time and simply cannot make that stop at the grocery store, the team at Tow and Stow will even stock a cooler with whatever you may need from their convenience store and deliver it to the marina or boat launch with your craft. To top it off, this year Tow and Stow has partnered with

Founded in 1965 as a John Deere dealership, Martin Deer-line and Martin Motor Sports have been growing strong for 47 years, with an extensive dealer network that now boasts 12 locations spanning across Alberta, Saskatchewan and British Columbia.

Based on the same principles of integrity, quality product and unparalleled customer service that the John Deere division em-bodied, the Motor Sports division opened its doors in 2003 with the understanding that agriculture and recreation weren’t as different as some might think.

Today, Martin Motor Sports is pleased to offer a huge selection of new and used boats from industry leading manufacturers in-cluding Supra, Moomba, Manitou and Bennington, and together with Tow & Stow they have redefined one stop marine shop-ping in Kelowna.

Because of this commitment to cus-tomer service, Martin Motor Sports is proud to be the #1 Supra, Moomba and Manitou Dealer in the world!

Martin Motor Sports and Tow and Stow have taken all of the hassle out of boating – leaving you and your

It’s Canada’s newest obsession, the ultimate adventure in travel and vacation fun – and for many the experi-ence of a lifetime. Ziplining! Just sit in the harness and relax or, be a dare-devil and zip upside down. With only the wind at your side and nothing above you but clear sky, you won’t get any closer to flying than this ... and the best part is we can get it right on our door step!

The Madsen fam-ily opened Oyama Zipline Forest Ad-venture in June 2011. Halfway between Kelowna and Vernon it is quickly becom-ing the Okanagan’s adventure headquar-ters. For some very good reasons.

Thanks to recent ad-ditions, including trap-door starts and and two racing lines, there are now seven different zipline runs with almost 2kms of zipping, reach-ing speeds of up to 86 kms/ hr!

The whole experience starts with the scenic drive to Oya-ma Ziplines. Whether you want to make it a day trip, or if you live nearby, the drive along lakes, family farms and orchards is awesome. Once you have arrived at Oyama Ziplines you will be greeted by the guest services agent to assist you with checking in. From there a guide will intro-duce you to the adventure of ziplining and help suit you

up in your harness and safety helmet. The “ZipMobile,”a 15 passenger shuttle, will then transport you to the top of the zipline course ... and the fun begins!

You will experience rope bridges, towers, nature walks, informational and educational signs, and of course some absolutely WICKED zipline rides. And the grand finale? Race a buddy at the double zipline and reach speeds up to 86 km/ hour! After a short nature walk back to the reception center you will then have the opportunity to purchase refreshments and merchandise ... and they even have extra under-shorts if needed. Well, it seems they have been requested.

Oyama Zipline also offers you the opportunity to pur-chase high quality action photos that are taken onsite while you zip upside down!

It’s fast, it’s thrilling, it’s heart-pounding. Simply awe-some. Make sure to enjoy every second of this jaw-drop-ping scenery. Because it goes by fast. Crazy, awesome fast.

Oyama Zipline Forest Adventure is open May – October, rain or shine. There is minimal walking and the fun is open to all ages (weight restrictions apply).

Should you be interested in a unique family celebration or a large corporate team-building event they can help you, too, as they teamed up with the “Gatzke Farm.”

Luxury Golf Course Living

If you ask anyone what they think the Okanagan Val-ley is about or what makes it special, most will answer the question in a very similar way. We are surrounded

by beauty in absolutely every corner of this area. Whether that be the awe inspiring mountains, incredible lakes as far as the eye can see, or the seemingly endless vineyards that surround us, it is no wonder the Okanagan attracts people the world over.

Our amazing landscape offers many outlets for outdoor activities from swimming, wakeboarding and mountain biking to one of the most popular ones, golf!

With so many award winning and world class golf re-sorts in our little valley it’s sometimes hard to know where to start. So, why not start with a place that is rated one of the best in the country?

Located in South East Kelowna, Gallagher’s Canyon Golf & Country Club is an amazing par 72, 18-hole championship course littered with challenging

fairways, beautiful greens and incredible panoramas.

With mature ponderosa pine trees flanking your every step and spectacular vistas surrounding you it is hard not to fall in love with this paradise. Only minutes away from downtown Kelowna and Lake Okanagan Gallagher’ Canyon is perfectly situated as a luxury get-away in the city.

Hole-in-One!

Summer 201220 www.icon-okanagan.comICON OKANAGAN

Extremely excited that our newest feature home from Jane Hoffman was in this incred-ible golf community we set out on a sunny Okanagan afternoon for the scenic drive to Gallagher’s Canyon. This private golf and country club is beautiful from the first mo-ment you pass through the gates. Pristine manicured lawns and landscapes abound while inviting walkways beg you to take the pup out for a stroll. Driving through the vil-lage at Gallagher’s Canyon is a delightful ex-perience that just puts a smile on your face.

Arriving at 3998 Gallagher’s Parkland drive you are met with the attractive brick façade of the home. Encapsulating rustic elegance, it exudes warmth. As we move through the stunning custom wrought iron entrance gate, it is clear that many countless hours have been dedicated to the creation of this masterpiece.

Entering the home we are met with opulent wide plank flooring throughout the main level. Ahead stands a custom designed faux armoire which actually acts as a closet and has a two foot depth. To the right is an el-egant office with plenty of space to work and even accept clients, just to the left is a com-fortable cozy room and library perfect for lounging and enjoying a book. Moving back into the foyer, we find the great room with a massive fireplace as its focal point just ahead. This space is perfect for a relaxing evening in with the family.

To the left we find a spacious laundry room with direct access the three car garage. This impressive space offers a work area, built in cabinetry and even a third mini garage door for golf cart access, how cool!

To the right is the elegant custom kitchen, old world charm is a word that comes to mind here. No, this is clearly not just the Lincoln biography we’ve all been waiting for. But it is definitely a fun read. It all started in 2008 when the editor at a small Philadelphia publishing house, had the bright idea of combining classic works of literature with pop-culture tropes for fun and profit. The result was “Pride and Prejudice and Zombies” and the lucky freelancer who was asked to write it was Seth Grahame-Smith. The book sold more than a million copies and has been made into a feature film starring Natalie Portman. Following its success Grahame-Smith now takes on Abraham Lincoln. The conceit is that he has come into possession of Lincoln’s secret diaries detailing his life as a stalker of...vampires. Yes, you read right. Vampires! Lincoln learns at an early age that his family has been victim to the unacknowledged plagues of American vampires since before he was born, first killing off Lincoln’s grandfather and then later his mother. Gifted with his legendary height, strength, and skill with an ax, young Abraham vows vengeance, provoking his bloody but curiously undocumented lifelong vendetta against vampires and their slave-owning allies. Wait, what? Yes - Lincoln discovers a link between the South’s slave trade and the vampire menace, and we finally understand the true rationale behind the Civil War.

What can we say, Grahame-Smith has not only recon-structed the true life story of 16th President of the Unit-

ed States of Amer-ica, he has also revealed the hid-den history behind the Civil War and uncovered the role vampires played in the birth, growth, and near-death of the country.

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter is a terrific twist on alternate history and an action-packed read. Definitely highly recom-mended to those who are fans of Lincoln, Civil War his-tory, or vampires. And if you think it is just not for you, give it a go anyway. You might be pleasantly surprised.

Oh, right – Grahame-Smith is currently writing the feature film adaption for the book for producer Tim Burton.

Seth Grahame-Smith is an American best-selling author, screenwriter, politi-cal blogger and producer of film and television. He is also the co-creator, head writer and executive producer of MTVs “The Hard Times of RJ Berger”, and is currently developing a number of projects for television and film. He lives in Los Angeles with his wife and son.

A Porsche DIESEL? Really? Really! Europeans have been enjoying the Cayenne Diesel since 2009 and it is one of the most popular engine choices for the SUV on the other side of the pond, and now Canada will get introduced to its first oil-burning Porsche this September.

ICON Okanagan had the chance to drive the stylish SUV with the turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 before it will officially hit the market.

Some back-ground ...Forget what you know about diesel engines. For-get about loud, smoky, slow. A quick look at the crucial fig-ures confirms

that the diesel is just 0.1 secs away from its gas fueled brother. But that’s not all. It is cleaner than the Cay-enne S Hybrid, and costs half of the Cayenne Turbo! And will easily do the Kelowna – Vancouver round trip on one tank of gas, sorry, diesel. Do we have your attention now? Then read on, it gets better ...

The First Impression ...Aesthetics first ... we LOVE it. The only difference between the exterior of the standard Cayenne and the diesel ver-sion will be the addition of two “Diesel’ badges on the fenders. The rest is the same sexy SUV that we all fell in love with and made it Porsche’s top-selling model. The interior - simply stunning as well. Very few sport util-ity vehicles look quite as nice on the inside and give you

the feel of sitting in a luxury sport sedan rather than a SUV. The interior features the typical Porsche cockpit-like design with an exceptionally high level of refinement that includes standard leather seating, and a center console that has been borrowed from the stylish Panamera sedan. It also comes with the typical tech features including Blue-tooth, iPod and USB interface, a touch screen display and a nice sound-system – to name but a few.

The Engine ...The second-generation turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 diesel is rated at 240 horsepower, which may not sound like a lot – but with 406 pound-feet of torque and a standard eight-speed automatic transmission it makes for an ex-tremely well rounded machine. Yes, most of us will drive it on tarmac and Porsche have tended toward on-road per-formance rather than off-road performance, but should you have to venture off-road, this Cayenne will feel quite at home. Same for the winter: The Porsche Cayenne Die-sel will be the perfect companion for you if you want to hit the slopes up at Silver Star Mountain or Apex., using its fancy Traction Management System controlling all four wheels. And did we mention the fuel economy? 8.5 litres per 100 kms or 28 miles per gallon sound to you? Our Conclusion ...If you are looking for a stylish, luxurious and sporty SUV that will get you up to 1,200 kms on one tank of gas (diesel, darn!), look no further and place your order

soon. Otherwise you may find your name at the bot-tom of a long waiting list.

A Vespa is the perfect blend of passion and practicality. For over 60 years, the “wasp” has been an international icon of Italian function and style. It all started in 1945, when Piaggio, a large munitions and heavy manufacturing company needed a cheap means of transportation to sell to Italy’s post-war masses.

They gave Corradino D’Ascanio the job of designing a simple vehicle that was tough, economical, and (since it was Italy) stylish. It had to be easy for

anyone to operate without dirtying their clothes, and have a seat for a passenger. D’Ascanio came up with the idea of a vehicle mounted on a chassis with the gear change on the handlebars. To make tire changing easier

he designed a supporting arm similar to an aircraft carriage. Finally, he designed a body where the riding position let you sit comfort-

ably and would protect the driver so that he would not get dirty or dishevelled.

When the prototype was built, Enrico Piaggio exclaimed, “It looks like a wasp!” And so the Vespa was born, and with more than 16 mil-lion units produced, it has become the most famous scooter in the world.

Today, Vespas are even more loveable. Still stylish as ever, still built with that steel monocoque chassis, but eco-chic, and with up to 100 mpg you will have a hard time finding anything more fuel efficient. They are trendy, affordable and easy-to-ride two-wheelers, perfect for congested cities or to explore our great valley with its rolling hills, orchards and vineyards. Hmm, sounds like Italy to me!

Ah, Italy. “La Dolce Vita,” the sweet life. Italy has always been “in”. It is the birthplace of art, of architecture, the cradle of the Renaissance, music, education. Italy is known for fantastic food, for great fashion and design. It’s a place where legends have been born. And one of them is ... the Vespa.

Developed on the base of the powerful GTS, the Vespa GTV’s

styling pays homage to the distinc-tive vintage look of classic Vespas

from the 50’s and 60’s, namely the headlamp which has been

positioned on the front mudguard, as it was on the very first Vespa

Vespa is the newest addition to the “European Collection” at Bentley Motorrad. With BMW, Triumph and Ducati in their showroom they already had the three main motor-cycle brands from “over the pond,” so this Italian legend is the next logical step and a perfect fit.

“It’s really a no-brainer,” Scott Benltey explains. “Look at the Okanagan. Rolling hills,

the most beautiful land-scape, a stretch of smaller

cities along lakes. The perfect setting for a scooter. It’s the smart option for your daily commute, last-minute errands or a Saturday trip to the farmer’s market. And with a Vespa you do it with style and elegance.”

They call it Vespanomics (Vés pá näm íks) n. Going green has never been as chic and fun as it will be with a Vespa. They get up to 100 miles-per-gallon and just think about the appr. $7,500 you will save per year(scooters cost $500 to operate annually, a new car will cost $8,121 to own and operate annually!) With those savings you can hop on a plane, go to Italy and get a whole new outfit in the motherland of fashion! Woohoo!

Selecting a model is a blast too, with a wide variety of op-tions your new ride can be a reflection of you. They come in many very cool colour-combinations, styles, and different engine-options from the 50cc “S” to the powerful 300cc “GTS 300 Super.” You can customize it, too. How about a cool chrome luggage rack, the retro windshield, a hand-made genuine leather saddle, or a top box for extra storage.

There’s also tons of cool merchandise for the Vespa-maniacs, so visit Bentley Motorrad on the Westside and hop on a Vespa!

Cleverly re-interpreting some of the traditional design and technical elements of vintage Vespas of the 1960s, the LXV is the result of pure Italian creativity and industrial culture.

Vespa is recognized as the epitome of Italian design and the standard bearer of what is deemed stylish and cool.

We had the op-portunity to view their entire line of boats, walk through the full service shop, as well as check out the gargantuan on-site storage facility out back. Whether you require pick up or delivery, major service or a simple tune up, some detailing or winterization and storage it is all right there.

Our favourite was the luxurious Harris Floteboat Royal 270 pontoon. Offering everything from reclining seats, a sink and food prep area, to a refrigerator, top of the line Alpine Diamond sound system, ambient lighting and a conspicuously silent 300 horsepower Mercury motor, this unit offers a myriad of ways to enjoy your

It seems the party never stops at Hillside Winery these days! Just recently winemaker Kathy Malone and her team brought home several medals from the All Canadian Wine Championships, and Chef Rob Cordonier was voted “Best Chef in the Okanagan!” The commitment to quality at the charming boutique winery has definitely paid off, and with their picturesque setting on the Naramata Bench halfway between Penticton

and Naramata, your visit will be an experience you won’t forget.

History is still alive! It all started in the early 1900s with the Riddle family who owned and operated an apricot orchard. Their property stretched about 100 yards north to what is now Riddle Road, and the original farmhouse stood on what is now the site of the tast-ing room. Make sure to have a good look at the cherry trees - they were on the Riddles’ front lawn and planted in 1926!

Unique, Small-Lot, and Terroir Driven -A Charming Boutique Winery on the Naramata BenchUnique, Small-Lot, and Terroir Driven -A Charming Boutique Winery on the Naramata Bench

In 1979, the property was purchased by Czechoslovakian immigrants Bohumir and Vera Klokocka. When Vera saw the land she had a vision - the sloping land carpeted by orderly rows of grapes – grapes that she would turn into luscious wines, even though she had no experience at either growing grapes or fermenting them.

In 1984 she and Bohumir pulled out the apricot trees and planted 3.5 acres of vineyards.

The last surviv-ing apricot tree from the Rid-dles’ orchard

remains on the bank just below the Kettle Valley Rail-way (on the northeast side of the building). The grape-vines thrived in the gravelly soil and warm Okanagan sunshine and Vera’s dream took shape.

In 1989 Hillside, together with Lang Vineyards and Wild Goose, lobbied the Provincial Government to bring about the Farmgate Winery Policy that was instru-mental in changing the B.C. Wine Industry. The new policy allowed small vineyards of five acres or less to not only produce wine but also to sell it directly from their premises.

The BuildingHillside is well-known for its charming and unique archi-tecture and the beautiful landscaping that surrounds it.

Designed by architect Robert MacKenzie back in 1997 (who later designed other wineries including Burrowing Owl, Red Rooster, Cedar Creek and Nk’mip), it took 2.5 years to build the current timber-frame winery building, which now dominates the view along Naramata Road with its 72 foot tower (which by the way acts as a ventilation shaft that helps to cool the winery cellar in the hot summer months.)

All of its 85,000 board feet of white pine originating from a single stand in northern Saskatchewan, the four dark Douglas fir beams that hold up the roof and upper pa-tio of their Bistro are the only B.C. lumber

in the winery and were logged off Vancouver Island in the late 1800s and previously supported the roof of the Acklands Hardware Warehouse on Granville Island in Vancouver for almost 90 years. In their lifetime these beams have survived at least three warehouse fires!

Hillside’s gardens are also a distinctive feature of the win-ery. Boasting over a hundred plant species, groundskee-per Karin Parkin converted the old wild English garden and expansive lawns into the beautiful display gardens you see today. Her meticulous work ensures that visitors are greeted from spring through autumn with a grandi-ose showing of continuous blooms.

The WinesHillside’s top quality Okana-gan Valley wines just re-cently won 4 Gold, one Silver and one Bronze medal. “It is our belief that great wines start in the vineyard, and to this end, we use only the best qual-ity fruit avail-able from our twenty acres of grapes densely planted on hill-

side terraces surrounding the winery,” says Winemaker Kathy Malone. Hillside Winery also have partnerships with select vineyards along the Naramata Bench as well as family owned vineyards in Oliver. As the original BC winery to produce Muscat Ottonel, a unique, aromatic white wine with a huge customer following, Hillside offer other varietals including Pinot Gris, Viognier, Gewürztraminer, Cabernet Franc, Syrah, Merlot, and Mosaic (which is their trademark Bordeaux-style blend.)

Cool temperature fermentations for the whites using state of the art steel fermentors produce intensely aro-matic and flavourful wines, while more traditional tech-niques are applied to the reds, resulting in rich, classic style wines that have consistently won accolades from both consumers and wine judges alike.

The best way to enjoy their wines is with lunch or dinner, and for that Hillside provide a truly unique and memorable setting with their award-winning restaurant.

The Hillside Bistro

Awarded “Best Restaurant Associated with a Winery in the South Okanagan,” the Hillside Bistro offers ex-ceptional contemporary wine country cuisine and fea-tures two patios with breathtaking views of vineyards, orchards and Lake Okanagan.

Executive Chef Rob Cordonier and his talented and committed team created a locally-inspired menu that clearly shows the creativity and passion in the kitchen.

From their tasty appetizer featuring soups, salads and our favourite, the Foraged Mushroom Fricassee, to sig-

nature Sandwiches (you have to try the Confit Duck Leg “Grilled Cheese” Sandwich !), Flatbreads, Main Courses (may we recommend the Rossdown Farms Chicken Leg Confit with Apricot and Tarragon?), and desserts, The Hillside Bistro is worth the drive.

And should you plan an event or a corporate meeting, the Bistro team will design the perfect menu to suit your needs and provide a truly unique and memorable setting with their award-winning restaurant.

But the feeling imparted by this Balinese oasis is a testament to what can be done with an empty piece of land, a vision, determination and nearly 30,000 man hours of labour.

Some 8 years ago, Tim Valerioti started Hampton Living with a focus on property maintenance and over time has evolved the company into one of the premier pool and landscape companies in the Okanagan Valley.

With a diverse and talented team of design and construction specialists, Hampton offers top-tier outdoor living expertise, with the ability to

transform their customers’ vision into reality.

Viva Alfresco!he sun is beating down; a tropical mist is in the air, the sound of a waterfall rushing down a rock face sculpted by years of water flowing seamlessly into a mystical grotto, endless waterscapes abound…could there be a more inspiring and relaxing place?

It may sound as though we have flown thousands of miles away and landed in a hidden tropical paradise, untouched by humans, a place where your only neighbours are the wildlife

that surrounds you and the foliage of the rain forest. In fact, this couldn’t be further from the truth. The reality is we are in a residential area and we are surrounded by homes and roads.

This particular project began life in 2010 as a pool and bar built above a garage, and as the clients’ world travels transformed their vision – it eventually became the entirely customized Balinese oasis that it is today. Boasting an unimaginable array of features, Tim and his team worked together to facilitate a logistical and engineering marvel which is operated entirely wirelessly from the comfort of a tablet computer.

An extremely challenging undertaking, this out-door living space was designed to have almost seamless lake views from every vantage point, complete privacy, and ease of use. With authen-ticity at the heart of the project, all of the exotic woods, marble flooring, hand carved stone as well as hand crafted teak doors were imported directly from Bali, this was facilitated by Carol Dodge of Sun Country Furniture, who is an ex-pert in the sourcing and importing of custom South East Asian goods.

The finished product is an absolute masterpiece. A private grotto offers 180 degree views of the lake while encircled by warm ambient light de-livered by electronically controlled candles and custom fire glass feature. As you stroll around the grounds music surrounds you no matter

where you are as the custom 7 zone audio system allows for complete control in absolutely every area of the oasis. The beautiful infinity edge pool appears to never end as it flows over the edge and seemingly into the lake. And as you relax sitting in the floating cabana, you must constantly remind yourself that you are not actually in the tropics to believe it. The sound of rushing water emanating from no less

than 8 stunning waterfalls only amplifies this effect. It is almost impossible to accept that all of this is sit-ting atop a 20 foot tall bunker style garage, capable of storing a full bus RV.

From simple water features and pools, to custom design and construction of complete outdoor liv-ing spaces, the team at Hampton, as this project showcases, is capable of creating whatever you can imagine and more. This Balinese playground oasis is truly spectacular.

The GentlemanThey should have taught you this in school....

This issue’s installment of “The Gentleman” is inspired by a recent dinner out to my favorite restaurant. I was blessed with the opportunity to witness two completely separate and very different approaches to going on a date with a girl. The juxtaposition between the two dates was truly beautiful. It was obvious that one guy had it figured out, and the other one might need a bit more time before trying to date a real woman. Let’s just say: he looked more into the server and his iphone than his gorgeous date. It doesn’t take a dating expert to lay out some ground rules for going on a date...just maybe someone to point out the obvious. If this offends you, then you might be guy #2.

• Be on time! Keeping a girl waiting so you can make an entrance or because you’re so “busy” is not cool. Trust me, you aren’t that important...show up when you say you will.

• If you don’t have someone in your life on their death bed, put your phone away! Better yet, leave it in the car. If you pull out your phone to answer a text or take a call, you are showing that she is a bit less important than whomever is on your phone. She should slap you. Nothing is more important than her.

• She has already agreed to go out with you. You’re in! Don’t spend the whole time trying to convince her how amazing, rich, strong, “connected,” or smart you are. I know you want her to know, I get it, but do it subtly and quietly.

• Here is the one thing you must take away from this: She wants you to be interested in her, ask her questions, and listen to her answers! Pay attention to her, and learn about her. That information, if you retain it, will serve you well in the future!

• Just so you know, she doesn’t want to hear about your exes. At all. The model you used to date doesn’t impress her.

• Compliments are a great idea! Just make sure they are not creepy ones about her body. You will want to focus your attention on her eyes. For those who missed that anatomy class in high school, the eyes are above the shoulders.

• Don’t be afraid to touch her. You know where this is go-ing I’m sure. Subtle hand or arm touches are ideal during conversation, and the lower-back hand “guide” through a doorway is always a winner.

• I know you can keg stand with the best of them, but let’s maybe keep the drinking to a controlled level. Drink what you like, but save the shots for the second date!

• If there are choices to make with respect to venue, time, activity or anything else, be a man! If she wants you to decide, do it and be assertive. Being wishy washy is not attractive.

• It should go without saying, but don’t forget to open doors (car and entrances), push her chair in, deal with her jacket for her, and make sure she is comfortable.

• At the end of the night walk her to her car, or walk her to the door.. If you are parting ways and she has to drive, ask her to call you to let you know she got home safely. Trust me, do it.

• Unlike what the movie “Swingers” would have you believe, it is okay to show that you like a girl. You can drop the stand-offish and cool demeanor. She wants to know you are thinking about her when she’s not around, and if you want to call the next day....do it! Just don’t tell your bud-dies.

They say if you see a guy open a car door for a girl, either the car is new, or the girl is. Don’t be that guy! The beauti-ful thing is that everything above can work on the first date, but it can also work on the girl you have been with for 40 years. Chivalry and genuine interest are attractive, and it can only lead to great things either in life or later in the night!

Kelowna General HospitalIt’s time to celebrate: Both the Dr. Walter Anderson Building & the Centennial Building at Kelowna General Hospital are open.

Completed on time and under budget, the Centennial Building adds another 360,000 sq. ft. to the Kelowna General Hospital site allowing for the continued modernization of programs and ser-vices for the improvement of health care delivery in the Okanagan, offering more than double its current surgical capacity by 2025.

Linked to the Centennial building by a very cool enclosed pe-destrian bridge, the Anderson building and is the home of the laboratory and clinical support departments for KGH. With the

addition of these new facilities the health care system in the Okanagan has achieved some very significant milestones.

Having suffered a spinal injury which left him a quadriplegic, Hans became involved in the Disabled Sailing Association of British Columbia when the former mayor of Vancouver, Sam Sullivan, invited him to the coast to try it out. Shortly afterwards, Sam Sullivan met with Hans and his wife Miriam to see if they could start the second chapter of the DSA in Kelowna and in May of 1993 it had become a reality.

Brewing Beer in Wine Country

Cannery Brew-ing was formed in 2000 in Penticton when Patt and Ron Dyck, who had been operat-ing The Country Squire Restau-rant in Nara-

mata for twenty-three years, teamed up with Brew Mas-ter Terry Schoffer and together they embarked on a new and exciting journey. They brewed their first batch of beer on April Fool’s Day, 2001, which clearly shows that this is not just a regular business for them, it is about fun, enjoyment and passion. And these same ele-ments are some of the key ingredients of their success.

“In the beginning, we brewed and sold beer in kegs for local restaurants, pubs and clubs,” Patt explains, “but then we started selling the 8.5 litre Party Pigs of beer and start-ed our bottling in the one litre EZ cap grolsch bottles. Ron

delivered these all over the province himself in our cube van. We finally started bottling in 650ml amber bot-tles and then two years later, can-ning in 355ml cans.”

Fast forward almost a dozen years and a cou-ple of expansions later, and today they brew more than 10 beers in multiple different packag-es, they offer tastings and tours and on December 21st 2011 they brewed their 1000th batch of beer.

“Craft beer has come a long way,” a very passion-ate Patt tells me while touring me through the brewery. “There are more and more people looking for differ-ent styles of beer for different occasions. They’ll choose one style when watching a football game, another on a patio on a hot day, and another again to pair with a BBQ dinner. And they are always looking for flavour.”

Living in wine coun-try, people know their grapes. And in the wine world where palates have evolved, much is the same with craft beer.

Microbreweries. I never thought much about them. Sure, I had heard about them, and I had seen bottles with very unique labels at the li-quor store, but that was about it. And then I started to do some re-search in preparation for a meeting with the owners and the team at the Cannery Brewing Company in Penticton. Well, it seems I al-most missed a trend. Or some might even say a boom, as craft brew-eries and microbreweries have been sprouting up lately like hops in the spring with double-digit sales growth in the last few years. A full-blown craft beer boom, so to speak. Now I was curious.

The Cannery Brewing Company, Penticton[A microbrewery is defined in Canada as one that produces

less than 60,000 hectolitres of beer in a year]

Brewing Beer in Wine Country

Beer drinkers think and talk about hops and beer styles the way that wine drinkers talk about grapes and wine vari-etals. And just look at the restaurants - It’s tough to find a restaurant worth eating at that doesn’t serve craft beer! The number of craft breweries is growing, the number of beers they microbrew is increasing, and so is aware-ness. Patt explained, “We are seeing beer bars opening in the bigger cities, beer festivals, craft beer weeks, cask nights and specialty beer tappings. We are also see-ing a real trend in beer and food pairings. Beer pairs so well with food and enhances the whole experience.”

Martin Lewis, Director of Food & Beverage for the Penticton Ra-mada Inn echoes this sentiment. “The craft brewing industry in

the West is changing fast-er this year than it has in the past 10 years. There have been craft brewer-ies doing great things for a long time, but some-thing has changed. Now younger people are on board, the press is recognizing the changing trend, and all of a sudden we have unprecedented access to more breweries and styles of beer. Cannery Brewing is leading the charge locally with creative cask conditioned ales and a new growler club that lets you enjoy fresh beer anytime.”

Interestingly enough, beer is not just a man’s busi-ness, or drink, anymore. Patt explained, “There are more and more women who are drinking craft beer because of its great flavour. They take a great interest in the different beer styles as well as the food and beer pairings. There is also an ever increasing number of women working in the craft beer scene. We have seen a new trend with ‘women in beer’ events, dinners, Facebook groups and Twitter handles such as @PinkPints.”

The “shop lo-cal” trend and the awareness of natural in-gredients in things we con-sume is impact-ing the beer business as well. Mass-produced beer is made with rice, corn, co-louring, flavourings and enzymes. In a way, you can see it as the equivalent of white bread―bland and lacking in good nutrition. Conversely, finely crafted mi-crobrewed beer is made with barley, wheat, hops and water. And like a good whole-grain bread, is better tasting and better for you. No nasty chemicals here.

There is more…a lot more in this fascinating craft beer industry. And the best way to find out about it is to stop by the brewery for a tasting and have Patt or one of the knowledgeable staff at Cannery Brewing show what the buzz is all about. Or book a tour and let them show you around the brewery and tell you about their natural in-gredients, their limited edition brews, their recommended

beer and food pairings and more. Oh and ask about their new “Growler” – it’s a reusable bottle which you can fill with what-ever beer they have avail-able. It’s the ultimate in freshly-brewed craft beer!

Martin summarized, “It is not good enough to just make great beer you need to have a dynamic team of dedicated people mak-

ing sure that everyone knows what is happening.“

My hat goes off to Can-nery Brewing for making that happen in Penticton.

Combine several different kinds, chop finely & add to anything (generally, at the end of cooking or before serving)

Brush one sheet of phyllo dough lightly, with butter and lay a second on top. Use a sharp knife to cut out 3” squares and ease these into each tart shell. Continue until all shells are lined.

Okanagan Spirits was started in 2004 with the intention of creating perfection from these less than perfect fruits.

Selecting only 100% British Columbia fruit including; ap-ples, pears, peaches, plums and a wide variety of other

fare, director of pro-duction and senior distiller Peter von Hahn oversees a line of inter-nationally acclaimed specialty spirits made without the use of ad-ditives, chemicals, or artificial flavours.

Recognized as a Master Class distillery and one of the top craft distilleries in the world, Okanagan Spirits began life in Vernon with a distillery in the downtown area, but in or-

outique and micro-distilleries have been established in Europe for many years but are a relatively new trend in North America. Designed

to create high grade spirits and liqueurs in smaller quantities, they are a fabulous way of showcasing local fruit and herbs.

In the Okanagan we are blessed with a climate and environment that produces copious amounts of high quality fruit, but this fruit is not always flawless in ap-

pearance and with the expectation of perfection in today’s society, much of it goes to waste.

Proof of Perfection

der to showcase the theatrics of produc-tion and offer a high end environment for tasting to mirror the quality of their prod-uct they decided to expand.

After much delib-eration and plenty of dollars, sweat, and tears, Okanagan Spirits opened their doors in Kelowna in December of 2011 and has without a doubt achieved its pur-pose of mirroring the quality of product which is produced within.

An absolutely breathtaking copper pot still, a work of art rivaling many, stands in the corner bubbling away releasing fragrant aromas while stunning reclaimed flooring sourced from the Gellatly Bay Packinghouse lies beneath your feet.

Just above, supporting the structure are beams from the Laurel Packinghouse and for safety the shop has been renovated to be the most fire-proof building on the street.

Interestingly, this space once belonged to David Leckie the man responsible for saving the Laurel

Packinghouse in 1912, and as homage to him they have brought a little bit of the Laurel to Bernard. Ironically, rumour has it, that Mr. Leckie’s son was the individual responsible for bringing Alcoholics Anon-ymous to Kelowna.

Now with two locations, one in Vernon on 28th Avenue and the other in down-town Kelowna on Bernard, Okanagan Spirits produces more than 25 varieties of alcohol including delicious fruit brandies, liqueurs, grappa, aquavit, gin, and even a genuine absinthe.

Okanagan Spirits proudly services the fin-est restaurants and resorts across Canada and have even been featured at Government House for British Columbia’s Lieutenant Governor, the Honourable Steven Point, to serve to his guests.

Nick Schafer is one of the true artists. Under his label “Fresh Finish Photography” Nick quickly gained popularity as THE club photographer in Kelowna. He loves to capture people when they are having fun, and the extremely colourful results generate huge traffic on the clubs’ website and social media outlets after the weekend. But there is more to Fresh Finish Photography, a lot more...

We literally ran into Nick during one of our photo shoots with an exotic car. All of the sudden we were joined by “this guy” who showed up with a far better equipment than we use, asking if he can take some pictures. “Of course,” we said, “just send us some pictures afterwards, maybe we can use them.” And we could and did. In fact they were so good, that we contacted Nick and asked for more samples of his photography.

And so we learned about his raw talent, saw samples of his amaz-ing landscape, automotive and portrait photography, we were abso-lutely fascinated with his very unique HDR (High Dynamic Range) pho-tographic art.

Since then we have worked with Nick sev-eral times. He was the photographer be-hind our cover shoot for the Spring 2012 issue, and he is also responsible for this issue’s cover and the Tommy Bahama fashion shoot.

Ok, let’s see if we can find out a little more about the man behind Fresh Finish Photography!

ICON Okanagan:When did you first “discover” the cam-era? Or in other words...when and how did the fascination start?

Nick/ FFP:I would have to say I have always been

interested in photography, but the first time I remember making a photo that caused me to think this is what I want to do was a simple shot taken with a Sony Cyber Shot. It was of a purple flower on the ground. The camera had a function where you could spot colour the photo and I did, and for some reason after seeing that I just wanted to keep making photos.

The next year for my birthday my lovely girlfriend bought me my first DSLR kit and I haven’t stopped making photos since.

Thanks Roxy!

At ICON we work with many local photographers and we are always amazed how different images can turn out. Take the same object, have 4 different pho-tographers take a picture of it, and you will get four totally different images. It is not just pushing the button, real photography is a combination of science and art. As in most art forms you have to master the scientific part of the medium first, before you have the knowledge to really achieve the result you have envisioned. And then again – if you don’t have a “vision” to start with, the result will often be a technically excellent photograph that lacks emotion and “seeing” qualities.

ICON Okanagan:Have you had any “formal” training?

Nick/ FFP:Nope. I get that question a lot, haha-ha. I have never had any formal train-ing and although I do believe school would be a valuable asset to a lot of things, I believe if you have a passion for it and an eye you can do it. Plus if you have any questions on anything just use this generation’s teacher...YOUTUBE!

ICON Okanagan:True, hahaha. Ok, the photography-interested readers sure would like to know what equipment you use?

Nick/ FFP:Right now I use a Nikon D700 (wait-ing to upgrade to the D800, though). In my bag I also have the 14-24mm f/2.8, 105mm f/2.8micro, 24-70mm f2.8 plus an SB700 and a few nick-nacks and other stuff. For post pro-cessing I have 27” iMac, Photoshop CS5 and Adobe Lightroom 3 (two MUST HAVE programs I highly rec-ommend any photographer to have in their arsenal.) Oh, and for my HDR processing, I use Photomatix Pro.

ICON Okanagan:HDR...we just love what you do here. Please tell our readers what this actually is.

Nick/ FFP:HDR or High Dynamic Range Photography is the process of taking multiple exposures (usu-ally 3-7) of the exact same scene then merging them all into one photo. This is done to prop-erly expose everything from the darkest shadows to the brightest

highlights. It can also be used to give an incredibly gritty or painted feeling to a photo. It basically makes the photo look hyper-real, giving even more dynamic range then your eye can sometimes see. ICON Okanagan:Photography is not your main income at this point. Do you want to change that? And if so, would you specialize in something?

Nick/ FFP:I would love to make it a full time job and if the stars align and the cards all fall into place that may happen, but that’s the way I live my life, what happens, happens, what’s meant to be will be, and I will just see what the journey of life throws my way.

About specializing in just one style, I don’t know. I love everything to do

with photography but if I was forced to be able to make a liv-ing by shooting only 1 style of photography it would have to be landscape. Being able to travel the world photographing beauti-ful locations would be a dream come true. High end real estate and large events(festivals/concerts) come in a very close 2nd though.

ICON Okanagan:Post-processing is huge these days. How important is it for you?

Nick/FFP:I find post process-ing to be incred-ibly important. Yes I do try to get everything right in camera but I find I will always edit my photos, even if it’s just slightly ed-iting the colours,

contrast, sharpness, or other things. I also LOVE Photoshop and the things you can do with it, you can really impart any kind of feeling you want to a photo.

ICON Okanagan:Let’s compare the “good?” old days of photography with to-day...have you actually ever used film?

Nick/ FFP:Haha, as with a lot of people my age, yes we have used film, but that’s when we were kids shooting with our parents cameras. Honestly I give the most re-spect I can to people that shoot with film, I could never do it, I love being able to check my shot as soon as I take it and delete what I don’t want. Could you imagine trying to shoot an event at the club with film haha, not to mention all the film you would need to carry with you if you were travelling.

ICON Okanagan:So true! Nick, last question. People are always won-dering about the colours in your club photography. Extremely vibrant. Would you mind sharing the se-cret with us? Nick/ FFP:Honestly, most of this is achieved right in camera. I definitely do post process every club image with a few homemade presets I have mastered over the time I’ve been at the club, but mainly low ISO, wide aperture, and semi slow shutter with an off camera flash. My exact settings and post process techniques are being kept a secret, though. Sorry!

The Granville Island Candle Company

hile many of you may think that going green is complicated, a

series of life altering and mas-sively inconveniencing chang-es, it doesn’t necessarily have to be so. Sure selling the massive V8 truck and moving into something a little more economical, switching to energy efficient appliances, or using green materials on your next renovation project are some of the more sig-nificant ways to shrink that carbon footprint, but if you are not in a posi-tion to be making such substantial changes, even the smallest effort makes a difference. Believe it or not, it can be as simple as changing the kind of candles you purchase as gifts or use around your home and work place.

Worldwide, candles are most commonly produced using a product called paraffin wax. A petroleum based product, this wax is derived from a non-renewable resource and can contain carcinogenic substanc-

es that have the potential to be released into the air when burned. A natural, healthy, and renewable alternative to these paraffin wax candles are soy candles. Made from soy

beans, soy candles offer a longer lasting cleaner burn with less soot and as they are non-toxic they will not release any of those carcinogens into the air when they are used.

Originally based in the Vancouver area, the Granville Island Candle Company is one of humble beginnings, focused on the produc-tion of soy wax based candles they shipped their first candles in 1999. Now celebrat-ing nearly 13 years of supplying quality soy candles to businesses and clients through-out North America, at ICON we were def-initely interested in learning a little more.

In 2003 the company made its transition from the Lower Mainland into the Okana-gan where new ownership has allowed for growth and expansion into a much larger production facility. Family owned and op-erated, they are able to offer large produc-tion capacity while maintaining the core values that originate from their existence as a family business. Today the Granville Island Candle Company with its facility in Kelowna, BC offers a very large vari-ety of scents, colours, as well as services.

With roughly 40 different fragrances, and the ability to mix and match scents with colours as well as select your own container, buying candles has never been more fun. From apple spice to blueberry, chocolate to cinnabuns, and coconut to dreamscicle the variety is just incredible and adventurous.

The heavenly scents of aromatherapy soy candles. Every candle is mixed and cast in house by hand and made with pure essential oils.

Can you imagine heading to a dinner party with a beautiful vase or even just a funky art glass you have transformed into a custom soy candle as a gift? Could you get more original? And when your friends have used up all the wax, all they have to do is head over to the Gran-ville Island Candle Company and get a refill.

Not only are the candles refillable but there are a huge range of sizes and shapes as far as the containers go, and you can even get a cool crackling wood wick. And, if you are more interested in essential oils, there’s even a dedicated line of special aromatherapy soy candles as well.

The Granville Island Candle Company is equipped to deal with all manner of requests, from providing custom candles for weddings and banquets or your special VIP event, to corporate branding, the 3,000 sq.ft. factory and outlet store is fully equipped with laser engraving equipment as well as in house label printing.

Fleeing the scene, Robie crosses paths with a fourteen-year-old runaway girl from a foster home. Not your ordinary runaway, as Julie Getty is devastated by the inexplicable murder of her parents in their home.

Who wanted them dead, and why, is a mystery, and now her own life is in danger as their killer is searching for her. Going, against all of his professional training and instinct, Robie rescues her from an attempt on her life and finds he can’t just walk away. He needs to help her. But things get worse when the police investigating the hit start to take an interest in Robie. He’s particularly attracting the interest of Special Agent Nicole Vance, who believes that the two cases are connected. Robie soon finds himself in

a dangerous position as he is convinced that Julie is at the center of a vast cover-up, one that may explain her parents’ deaths and stretch to unimaginable levels of power.

Now, Robie may have to change sides to save this girl’s life . . . and perhaps his own. This is another great novel by a brilliant writer. Baldacci grabs hold of you from the very first page and steals your attention until the very last word.

That’s when the U.S. government calls on Will Robie, a stone cold assassin who never questions orders and always nails his target. Only this time Will Robie makes a mistake. He refuses to kill. The first and maybe last mistake of his career. Now, Robie becomes a target himself and must escape from his own people.

David Baldacci was born in Virginia where he currently resides. He received a Bachelor of Arts in political science and a law degree and practiced law for nine years in Washington, D.C., as both a trial and corporate attorney.

We were a little weary of the weather on this one, but luckily the beautiful Okanagan sunshine cooperated with us and everyone had an amazing time. With admission including locally inspired food fare, a huge range of entertainment, Nota Bene vino flowing bountifully, as well as shuttle pick up and drop off in Osoyoos, we definitely had a lovely afternoon in the heart of Black Hills scenic vineyard.

With multiple stations interspersed throughout the venue serving delectable culinary creations expertly paired with a number of Black Hills wines, social interaction was encouraged and abundant. Entertainment included live music, the art of JasonGOGO, a live auction, and fabulous gravity defying aerial acrobatics.

Front and center however was the delicious Nota Bene, a red we won’t soon forget!

Sperling Vineyards 2010 Market White

Clos Du Soleil 2009 Signature

Ann Sperling brings 30 years of passionate winemaking experience home to the vineyard she grew up on, continuing a tradition begun by her great grandparents 150 years ago. She uses organic practices to craft elegant wines that showcase the mineral–rich benches and sun-drenched vineyards of the east Kelowna property.

A blend of Pinot Blanc and delicately aromatic Baccus with a hint of Perle, this wine is the perfect addition to any summer day. Soft on the palate with flavours of Macintosh apple, apricot and pear,

Food Pairing: Market White pairs wonderfully with spicy dishes, seafood, salads, desserts or an Okanagan sunset and good company!

The perfect patio wine!

The Wines of Summer ...Now that summer has (finally) parked its sweaty self over the Okanagan Valley it is time to look into some lovely summer wines. And while we all enjoy a good red wine, the thought of drinking a glass of a heavy red right now feels just that- heavy. But don’t worry, there are many great wines out there that are perfect foils for the dog days of summer. And your favourite magazine was once again on a mission to find the ones that will delight your senses!

Clos du Soleil is a small winery nestled on the upper bench of the Similkameen Valley. Using sustainable practices they produce delicious wine in the Bordeaux style, but with a distinctive New World edge. The name refers to the rocks, sun and soil from the mountain that forms a tall natural stone wall at the back of the vineyard trapping the sun’s warmth. The use of all 5 red Bordeaux varietals (Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec) and maturation for 18 months in French oak barriques before bottling without fin-ing or filtering gives this wine great complexity. It greets the nose with vibrant strawberries and blackberry notes with hints of sandlewood and spice. As it opens dark cherries, plums and soft hints of caramel, espresso and chocolate come into play. On the palate the fresh fruit is echoed on a soft tannin base. After decanting, a balanced yet soft tannin structure frames the fruit and the aromas intensify. A full bodied wine that is a perfect match for grilled and barbequed meats, and flavourful cheeses.Bronze medal Okanagan Wine Festival 2011

Rigamarole 2009 White

JOIE 2011 Rosé

Joie Farm, owned and operated by Heidi Noble and Michael Dinn, is located on the Naramata Bench. Joie – which means “joy” in French – expresses the pleasure that food and wine have brought to their lives, they explain, and it is surely reflected in their eclectic and unique portfolio of wines. Unique because they get their insipration from the grape varieties grown in the famous wine regions of Burgundy and Alsace, France, and unique because it is usually a small production of only 9,500 cases that sell out quickly - so make sure you get a case before it is gone!

We picked the 2011 Rose as we think it is the perfect wine for a nice Okanagan summer day (or night). Fill the glass and you will see a stunning pink colour, then swirl the glass and take a deep inhale. Welcome to a fruit basket filled with strawberries, caramel apples, raspberries and cherries, maybe a whiff of herbs. Wonderful. Now to the best part – the taste. Have a small sip and let it roll around your mouth. They added Pinot Meunier and Pinot Gris to their blend of Pinot Noir and Gamay, and the result is highly aromatic. It is off-dry on the palate, has a floral quality mixed with berries, and finishes with a firm citrus acidity. By the way: Drink it young!

Let’s just say this is the perfect “sipper” but if you want to pair it with some food we recommend creamy cheeses, summer salads, fish dishes or the sun dried tomato focaccia flat bread we had it with!

“Why is it always such a RIGAMAROLE to simply find a great drinking WHITE?”

If you haven’t heard the name of the winery you have surely seen their funny safari-themed labels. Rigamarole Wines come from the Okanagan Artisan Wine Company, which is owned by Mis-sion Hill Family Estate Winery who makes all their wines. There was almost no marketing for the brand, so it must be the eye-catching labels that made consumers give the wine a try, and maybe it is the fainting (but happy) goat on the label of the Rigamarole White that made it a very successful competitor in the “entry-level/ less than $20” field.

Ok, so we have a very nice label, and a very interesting price, but how is the wine? It is well made! This blend of Ehrenfelser, Gewürztraminer, Muscat and other dry whites has strong aromas of spice and citrus, which gives it a crispness due to the acid balance from start to finish.

Our food editor recommends this dry, aromatic and engaging white with spicy Asian or Thai food. And the OAWC says “save the mental energy for understanding the physiology of the “fainting” goat - just what makes him fall over?
