Website Analysis:Feelings & Needs

Comparing the Experience of Content Curation Tools

Both Pinterest and Evernote are web-based tools designed to collect, organize

and store material found on websites. I use Pinterest on a daily basis to save

links to projects, or to review my previously saved projects and begin creating

them. Pinterest's visual style works for my recreational hobbies of art, craft and

design. I am searching for a similar tool to curate the articles that I read related

to my work. This would make it easier for me to conduct research and writing

professionally. However I have yet to find another content curation tool that is as

intuitive, user-friendly, or inspiring as Pinterest. I performed this analysis of my

feelings and needs, and how they are met or not met through a comparison of

these two tools, in hopes of discovering why I prefer one over the other.

Curious & InspiredThe Landing PageThe initial landing page of Pinterest makes

me feel CURIOUS and INSPIRED by

meeting my need for JOY and CREATIVITY

by making things as a form of SELF-

EXPRESSION. The landing page provides

fresh content each time I log in, with a

seemingly endless vertical scroll which fills

me with ideas. Through the use of images

and short titles, I can quickly navigate

through the content to find exactly what

inspires me, clicking on each item for more

detailed information.

Creative & OrganizedThe My Content PageThe boards page, which showcases my

saved content on Pinterest, makes me feel

CREATIVE and ORGANIZED by meeting my

need to CATEGORIZE my content and

CUSTOMIZE what is displayed on the

page. I can easily move the location of

boards, rename them descriptively, and

select which images appear. Information is

also provided on how many different items

exist. The images help me to better

understand what's inside each board.

Motivated & ValuedThe Add New Content PageThe pop up menu for adding new content

to Pinterst makes me feel MOTIVATED and

VALUED by meeting my need for CLARITY

and EASE OF USE. By prompting me to

understand what should be entered into

each section of the form, my confusion is

alleviated and my time on the site feels

respected. By showing my own icon, and

including a drop down menu with my

existing boards, I feel remembered by the

site, giving me a sense of belonging.

Pinterest makes me feel CONNECTED and

EXCITED by meeting my need for

BELONGING, COMMUNITY and

COLLABORATION. The photo icons

complement the usernames, reminding me

who I am connected with on the site. The

images that they've saved remind me of

the value each connection brings to my

experience of the site.

Eager & PlayfulThe Search PageThe search page on Pinterest makes me

feel EAGER and PLAYFUL by meeting my

need for JOY and SPONTANEITY. The

search box is pre-filled with a promot

which I have used previously, making me

feel seen and valued. Below that are

images which provide inspiration for other

things I might search for within the site.

Drawing from data of things that have

interested me in the past, the images are

relevant and timely, making my time spent

on the site feel worthwhile.

Optimistic & Intrigued The Landing PageThe initial landing page of Evernote makes

me feel OPTIMISTIC and INTRIGUED by

meeting my need for LEARNING and

GROWTH. The list of articles I have read in

the past reminds me of the progress made

on my intellectual path, and themes that

are of interest to me. The larger article on

the right remind me of what I was last

reading, and inspires me to continue

persuing academic growth.

Indifferent & UninspiredThe My Content PageThe sidebar which lists all of my existing

notebooks in Evernote makes me feel

INDIFFERENT and UNINSPIRED by failing to

meet my need for CLARITY and ORDER.

The list of notebooks does not provide

adequate information to understand what's

inside, or their relevance to my work. The

alphabetical order of the notebooks

doesn't provide a useful hierarchy of the

content.

STRESSED by failing to meet my need for

EFFICACY or TRUST. The yellow Upgrade

button stands out the most on the page,

pushing me to pay for additional service.

The lack of instruction or visual cues on the

page leave me wondering what content I

should add here, and what goes in which

box.

Confused & Anxious The Social PageThe chat window of Evernote makes me

feel CONFUSED and ANXIOUS by failing

to meet my need for PRIVACY and

TRANSPARENCY. The email address and

small icon do not help me understand who

is communicating with me, or how they are

connected to me. The information of what

was shared with me lacks detail, so the

prompt to respond leaves me wondering

exactly what I am responding to.

Hesitant & Frustrated The Search PageThe search page of Evernote makes me

feel HESITANT & FRUSTRATED by failing

to meet my need for INSPIRATION or

PURPOSE. The mostly blank screen, lacking

in meaningful prompts or suggestions, fails

to provide enough context to help me know

what I am searching, or what terms to use.

Without being able to see my notebooks, I

am left wondering what notebooks I have,

or what might be contained within them.

Website Analysis:Conclusion

Visuals, Prompts & A Folksy Tone Make All The DifferenceThrough my comparison of Pinterest and Evernote, I found that the abundant use of

images on the Pinterest site kept me engaged longer than the largely text based format

of Evernote. The images served to excite and inspire me, as well as provide visual

reinforcement of the content I was viewing. Pinterest also used prompts through its site,

in any place where I needed to add my own words. This helped me to feel confident that

I was interacting with the site in the right way, and in a way that would be useful to me

later on as I created my own organizational structure. Finally, Pinterest utilized a warm

tone in its labeling and writing, that made me feel welcome compared to the more

clinical language used on Evernote. While Evernote has the same basic underlying

purpose and structure as Pinterest, I found Pinterest to be more responsive to my own

feelings and needs.
