REFLECTION

Through the interview session, we have learnt what it

takes to be a Quantity Surveyor, which is the ability to

work as a team and having clear understanding in the

building regulation and other legal guidelines. Besides, a

Quantity Surveyor ought to have good knowledge in

different construction methods and materials. Budget

handling skills are also important to obtain or achieve an

optimum and accurate value of a project.

Even though the roles and responsibilities of a Quantity

Surveyor in a construction field is very important and it

takes endless nights to complete a project, but the sense

of accomplishment and satisfaction after completing a

project is great that none can deny.

EMQ Link Sdn. Bhd. was

founded on the year 2012

(formally known as Dynamic

Designed Sdn. Bhd.) by a well

experienced personnel,

Ir. Phuah Chong Hei and being

actively involved in civil &

building construction since

then. The company is eagerly

to build-up its reputation and

constantly looking forward

for opportunities in

expanding its capacity by

conforming to its motto, i.e.

What are the challenges faced in the projects and

how you managed to overcome them?

As a QS, cost accuracy and rigid time schedule is a challenge for me.

Besides, I have to ensure fairness to all parties, striving a balance between

the company & contractors.

What kind of project would you

like to handle in the future?

All project are similar once you have obtained

the skills and knowledge. If given a chance, I

would like to be involved in airport projects,

MRT, Hydroelectric Dam & power plants.

THE INTERVIEW

Can you talk about your profile and background?

I graduated from TARC holding a certificate in QS locally and graduated

from University of Melbourne holding a Bachelor Degree in Planning & Design (Property Construction).

I started working since 2002 after graduation in construction firm and

obtained a total 13 years of experience in this industry.

I started off as an assistant quantity surveyor, moving on to site QS, QS site manager and currently a project manager in EMQ Link Sdn. Bhd.

How you started as quantity

surveyor?

Since 1996, the construction industry in

Malaysia was booming. The job

perspective was good at that particular

time with good pay and allowances and

was relatively new.

These were the factors I am attracted to

be involved in quantity surveying.

What are your

roles and

responsibilities

in the projects?

I am also a contractual

and legal matters advisor

in the projects. Besides, I

have to monitor the

construction phases to

ensure forecast costs are

in line. During the

calculation in the

projects, feasibility

studies are done to

understand the time

frame, number of labours

and types material used.

My roles & responsibilities

in these projects are similar

since each project has

similar stages, with the first

crucial task that is

managing cost. I am also

required to calculate the

quantities, and through the

procurement process, I

must also be involved in

negotiating and drawing

bids for tenders and

contracts.

What are the projects that you have handled

before or handling now?

Beginning until now, I’ve handle 7 projects in total. It seemed very few but

looking into the time elevation of every project that is quite long it is reasonable unless there are situation of hopping between jobs.

First project

Largest project, which

costed about half a billion.

highways, bridges, underpass construction.

Third project

(Commercial) Buildings. It is the second

largest project that costed about 240

millon. Client F&N Company. Involves the

construction of service apartments, hotels,

podium/complex, and basement

Current project

PPU (Pencawang Pembahagian

Utama) in University Malaysia.

It is a small-scale project with a

duration of 12 months.

The project is a construction of a

substation and started 19 March 2015.
