Dear Friends,Greetings! We are absolutely delighted by the great honour bestowed on our esteemed Life Trustee Dr. R.A. Mashelkar for having been awarded the Padma Vibhushan this year, India’s second highest civilian honour, for his significant role in evolving science and technology policies in post-liberalised India. Dr. Mashelkar has been our Trustee for around four years now and having interacted with him personally, all I can say is that he is the most humble, straightforward and down-to-earth person I have ever met and along with everyone at ICG. I wish him luck in all his future endeavours. We’ve had a very vibrant quarter brimming with ideas and giving us enough food for thought, with lectures from eminent people like Ambassador Rakesh Sood, and Commodore (Retd) C Uday Bhaskar.. We also had with us the very acerbic Mihir Sharma, Opinion Editor for Business Standard newspaper, who spoke on “The Ideas of India”. Dr. Sangeeta Sonak – Director of Centre for Natural Resource Management delivered an illustrated talk on ‘Khazans: Heritage Eco-Systems of Goa’ to a full house!

Very recently we also organized a very interesting talk cum interactive session on ‘Curating Balcao’, an exhibition of Goan artists, based on Portuguese influence on Goan culture, by Dr. Subodh Kerkar, a renowned Installation Artist himself. Seeing from the response we got for most of these programmes, we are thrilled by your interest and enthusiasm and are certain that our collaboration will continue for the season to come. From hosting lectures open to all, to organizing workshops on growing organic vegetables, ICG continues to reach out to the broader public in greater numbers than ever before. We launched the 1st ICG-Goa University Essay Competition 2014 under the banner “IDEAS UNLEASHED” on 11th January 2014. The topic is “Innovative Ideas for Raising Goa’s Human Development Index to the Very High Human Development Group Level By 2025: Role of Government and Society”. The essays are expected to focus on boosting education, health and income, and offer innovative solutions and creative, out-of-the box ideas which can inspire decision-makers in the Government of Goa, academics, policy-makers, media and civil society. The response was good; we’ve received 50+ essays from colleges across Goa. Now the wait is on for the jury to announce the results. Our health series continued for this season too. We had thought provoking talks on healthy heart, spondylitis, diabetes and hypnosis. We had an array of workshops ranging from Has-kale, Warli, and Madhubani painting to Ballet, African / Salsa and Gypsy dance classes by Jana Schindler. Prof. Ashutosh Varshney’s book ‘Battles Half Won: India’s Improbable Democracy’ was launched earlier this year by Shri Bharat Vir Wanchoo, Hon’ble Governor of Goa.Last month we commemorated International Women’s Day with a series of week long programmes from the 7th to the 16th of March. It was thoroughly informative and inspiring to know how far we’ve all come in terms of Women’s rights and issues, and how far we still have to go. During the week we had poetry recitals, one act presentations, a seminar on ‘Gender Discrimination in Media: Need for Positive Reporting’. We also had Dr. O.P. Mishra, DIG, Goa Police, talk to rural women on laws related to crimes against women. A four day film festival was organized in partnership with the International Association of Women in Radio and Television (IAWRT) and in association with Entertainment Society of Goa and Department of Women’s Studies – Goa University. The festival showcased films of various genres including animated movies, community videos, experimental films, feature fiction and short fiction. All these events were well attended, especially by women from all walks of life.I invite you to visit our website regularly to learn about our new services and upcoming events, and I look forward to seeing you at the Centre for an unforgettable experience in the quarter to come. Also summer is here with a bang, so please enjoy our swimming pool with family and friends.Wishing you happy holidays and good health !
