The National Gallery of Iceland was established in 1884. The National Gallery’s main role is to collect, preserve, research and exhibit Icelandic art.

The Sigurjón Ólafsson Museum exhibits works by Icelandic sculptor Sigurjón Ólafsson (1908 – 1982) in the artist’s former studio at Laugarnes.

Ásgrímur Jónsson (1876 – 1958) is one of the pioneers of Icelandic art. The Ásgrímur Jónsson Museum hosts the artist’s studio and home. The museum regularly holds exhibitions of the artist’s works.

Kjarvalsstaðir houses permanent exhibitions by the painter Jóhannes S. Kjarval (1885 – 1972) and temporary exhibitions by leading 20th century Icelandic and international artists.

This renovated ware-house by the harbour boasts a permanent exhibition by pop artist Erró (b. 1932) and experimental exhibitions by local and international contemporary artists.

Núllið occupies the underground space of a former female public lavatories, which are culturally protected and have been renovated and opened up again for the public as an exhibition space with the aim of promoting contemporary art.

The collection of Nýló comprises around 2,000 works by Icelandic and international artists, along with the main archives; the Archive of Artist-Run Initiatives and the Performance Archive.
