OUR LAND: Iceland covers an area of 39,768 square miles, and is about the size of Kentucky. This makes it quite roomy for our population of just over 300,000 (approximately .1% of the population of the United States). 60% of the population lives in the capital, Reykjavik, as well as its neighboring communities, making it relatively easy to find peaceful solitude.

LANGUAGE: Our people speak Icelandic, which is so similar to what the Vikings spoke that most ancient literature can be read by modern Icelanders. Luckily, the majority of inhabitants also speak English in addition to several other languages.

GETTING AROUND: Iceland is easily negotiable by car, and various types of rental vehicles are readily available. A current driver’s license is required, along with familiarity with international road signs. Driving is on the right side of the road, as in North America. Bus transfers are available from Keflavik International Airport to Reykjavik. Additionally, public busses run throughout Reykjavik and the countryside. Domestic flights from Reykjavik City Airport connect to towns around the country as well as Greenland and the Faroe Islands. Taxi service is available in towns as well as at the international and domestic airports.

WEATHER AND WHAT TO WEAR: The name Iceland is deceptive, for the warm waters of the Gulf Stream provide a surprisingly mild climate. During the summer months the Midnight Sun shines and everything is a lovely green. Winter brings occasional snow, the Northern Lights and milder average temperatures than New York City or Toronto.

It is best to pack an all-weather jacket with hood, warm hat, scarf and gloves, sturdy walking shoes or boots, and a bathing suit to enjoy Icelanders’ favorite pastime! Please check your specific itinerary for additional suggestions.

CURRENCY: The Icelandic Kronur (ISK) is available at banks, hotel currency exchanges and ATMs through-out Iceland. Credit cards are widely used, especially MasterCard and Visa.

TIME ZONE: Iceland is on Greenwich Mean Time.

ELECTRICITY: Electricity in Iceland is 220 volt, 50 Hz, AC so a converter is needed to use U.S./Canadian electronics and appliances.

ICELANDAIR'S 75 YEAR HISTORY FUN FACTSIn 2012 Icelandair celebrates 75 years of service. Icelandair has long been a pioneer in the aviation world. From humble beginnings to expanded transatlantic route additions, Icelandair has really spread its wings.

1937 I Flugfélag Akureyrar is founded in Akureyri on the north coast of Iceland.

1938 I Operations begins in 1938 using a Waco YKS-7 floatplane.

1940 I Flugfélag Akureyrar moves its headquarters to Reykjavík and changes its name to Flugfélag Íslands.

1944 I A company called Loftleiðir is formed by three pilots. Initially, Loftleiðir and Flugfélag Íslands concentrate on Icelandic domestic air services.

1945 I Flugfélag Íslands (Iceland Airways) makes its first international flights to Scotland and Denmark.

1946 I Scheduled international services commence with aircraft leased from Scottish Airways.

1947 I Loftleiðir begins international operations.

1953 I Not subject to IATA’s fare regulations, Loftleiðir pioneers low-fare services across the North-Atlantic, earning its nickname, “The Hippie Airline.”

1973 I Flugfélag Íslands and Loftleiðir merge, creating Flugleiðir, or Icelandair, in English.

1997 I A subsidiary of Icelandair, Air Iceland, is established to operate domestic Iceland and other short-haul flights.

2005 I A new company called Icelandair Group is formed as a holding company to Icelandair and subsidiaries (OMX: ICEAIR).

PRESENT I Icelandair continues to grow and prosper, announcing new routes and service in North America, Scandinavia and Europe.

■ Iceland boasts the world’s highest literacy rate at 99.9%.

■ Established in 930, the national assembly, or Althingi, is the world’s oldest parliament.

■ With 85% of Reykjavik’s energy supplied by clean and sustainable resources, such as geothermal power, Reykjavik is known as the cleanest capital in the world.

■ Though it is situated on both North American and European techtonic plates, Iceland is considered to be located in Europe.

■ Covering 11% of Iceland, Vatnajökull is the largest glacier in Europe.

■ Reykjavik is the world’s northernmost capital.

■ One of the only words directly translated into English from Icelandic, “geyser” comes from the Great Geysir, a sprouting hot spring found in the Haukadalur Valley.

NORTHERN LIGHTSWinter’s frosty nights are often aglow with the natural fire of a surrealistic painting. Take an evening tour to search for them outside Reykjavik. Or increase your chances and head up to Myvatn near the Arctic Circle, a great place for Northern Lights viewing and winter sightseeing. Note: best months for viewing are November through March. Northern Lights sightings are not guaranteed.

THE MYSTERY OF NATUREWinter’s pearly light brings out the mystical beauty of Iceland’s landscapes. Many famous natural wonders can be visited during the winter, especially in the south. Experience them on a day tour or on a winter escorted tour like the popular “Glaciers, Geysers and Waterfalls“ (5 nights).

OUTDOOR ADVENTUREIceland is an adventure magnet year-round, and you can take advantage of activities like snowmobiling, glacier walking, caving and horseback riding.

NIGHTLIFEReykjavik’s nightlife is world-famous, especially during the winter. Most cafés, clubs and bars are located in Old Town Reykjavik, perfect for a pub crawl. Ideal whether you’re celebrating a bachelor party or a girlfriend’s weekend away.

EVENTSTake in events such as Iceland Airwaves, Food & Fun and Winter Lights in Reykjavik. Iceland’s location between Europe and America makes it the hot spot for international performers. Check out our packages for year-round concerts and artistic delights.

RELAXATIONIceland’s innovative spas incorporate the natural elements of lava rock and geothermally-heated water, combined with traditional Scandinavian pampering. Spas are popular year-round, but the winter months are especially ideal for a rejuvenating spa getaway.

TRADITIONSTake part in some of Iceland’s unique holiday traditions. Celebrate Thanksgiving in Iceland or enjoy Christmas preparations and feasts. Celebrate New Year’s Eve in Reykjavik with an explosively spectacular fireworks display. Discover Viking heritage and traditional foods during the Midwinter Festival (Thorrablot). There’s something for everyone.

From the ambiance of Amsterdam to the romance of Paris, we’ll take you to Europe’s hottest spots. When flying to any of Icelandair’s destinations, you can stopover in Iceland en route for no additional airfare. Or taking in natural wonders like glaciers and geysers before viewing the impressive architectural designs of Germany. Or just stopping for a quick rest and some fresh air before continuing on to Norway for a fjord cruise.

It’s truly two destinations for the price of one!

DESTINATIONSREYkjAvIkVisitors often exclaim that Iceland is "out of this world" when, in reality, flights to Iceland take just about five hours from New York and Boston, and only about 7 hours from Seattle! It may be "otherworldly," yet travel-ers can't wait to return again...and again. terfentes sum timus conuntium Romnihint.

AkUREYRIKnown as "the Capital of the North," Akureyri is the second largest urban area in Iceland. Various museums, churches, and the Botanical Gardens fill this charming center of culture that sits on a harbor. Icelan-dair now offers easy connections to Akureyri from the International airport in Keflavik.

TRONDHEIMSituated where the River Nidelva meets the large and panoramic Trondheimsfjord, the city of Trondheim is central Norway’s main hub of commerce and trade. COPENHAGENOne of this city’s greatest attributes is its ability to enchant visitors with its charm and cordiality, engulf-ing them with a welcome that is more reminiscent of a small town than a cosmopolitan metropolis. A stroll along Nyhavn (“New Harbor”), with its beckoning cafes, may entice you to taste some of the Danish special-

ties, such as smorrebrod (open sandwiches), polser (hot dogs) and frikadeller (meatballs), along with a cold Danish beer.

BILLUNDThe town of Billund is centrally located on the Jutland peninsula in Denmark. It lies just west of the towns of Horsens and Vejle and northeast of the transport hub town of Esbjerg. From there you can easily travel any-where in Denmark or south to Germany and onwards to the rest of Continental Europe.

HELSINkITravel to Finland and Helsinki and you are technically in Scandinavia. But not entirely typical Scandinavia as here we find an interesting blend of east, north and west.
