Iceland and Svalbard (Norway)

Departs June 2, 2018

ICELAND AND SVALBARD (NORWAY) PRISTINE LANDSCAPES, QUIRKY CULTURE, POLAR BEARS AND A LOT MORE.

Whatever your perceptions of Iceland may be, they are possibly off the mark - or at least dated - as this small North Sea nation keeps on reinventing itself. From humble Nordic origins it has become one of Europe’s leading eco-paradises, boasting the largest national park in the European Union - Vatnajökull. Here you’ll discover pristine streams full of salmon, trails through glaciers, five-gaited Icelandic horses running wild, and bubbling pools of mud and sulphur to heal the body and mind. Many things remain exactly as the Vikings found them around 1,100 years ago, especially the raw and dramatic glacial fjords. Then there’s the other side of Iceland, the hip and contemporary side. For years Bjork and other quirky Icelandic musicians have not so quietly made Reykjavik a happening music and nightlife destination.

The Norwegian archipelago of Svalbard, which was formally known as Spitsbergen, lies in the Arctic Ocean roughly half way between Norway and The North Pole. It comprises of three main islands and numerous smaller ones. One of the world’s northernmost inhabited areas, it's known for its rugged, remote terrain of glaciers and frozen tundra sheltering polar bears, Svalbard reindeer and Arctic foxes. Summer brings the “midnight sun” – sunlight 24 hours a day. Grab an atlas and you will see that its latitude is the same as the tip of Greenland’s north. It’s a long way from anywhere and has a small population of less than 3,000 over the same land mass as Tasmania. From close-up encounters with icebergs and glaciers to the region’s plentiful wildlife, this is a voyage of non-stop highlights. You’ll explore this landscape not only by ship but also on foot and via Zodiac. Roaming polar bears, lounging seals, grazing reindeer, and colonies of birds all co-exist in this harsh land.

Our tour explores Iceland at a good pace, over 12 days. The Svalbard component is via an expedition cruise ship where you’ll spend 7 nights on board. There is also an option to extend to other parts of the region including Greenland, The Faroe Islands and parts of Scandinavia. Grab your camera and be prepared to be wowed!

DAYS 15 - 21 (Saturday 16th Jun to Friday 22nd Jun) ARCTIC CRUISE TO SVALBARD ARCHIPELAGO Our voyage is spent travelling in the world in which the polar bear survives. Our wildlife viewing opportunities are enhanced by exploring as many remote areas as possible. Spotting wildlife like the arctic fox, Svalbard reindeer and land or sea birds can be difficult, but well worth the effort. Ice and weather conditions permitting we can explore near sea ice, through fjords that lead to glaciers and icebergs, and discover bird nesting colonies, all from the platform of the ship. Alternatively, hop in a Zodiac to explore more closely, or be brought to land to visit historical sites and experience the tundra. We are always on the lookout for wildlife, ranging from endangered and rare polar species to sea mammals and birds. And, of course, we'll have our eyes peeled for polar bears - they can be found all throughout this region, but finding them can require patience and persistence. B/L/D all on board

Expedition tour special terms and conditions. This is one of these destinations where supply and demand comes into force. Iceland is growing rapidly as a travel destination and hotels are limited. As with many cruises to this part of the world, cabins often sell fast – especially the lower and mid cost options. These factors mean that to secure your place on this tour, our terms differ to that of our standard terms. The following terms and conditions are in addition to our standard terms and conditions; • Medical Form: A special Medical Form is mandatory for all

expedition tours. You must return your Medical Form signed by a licensed and practicing physician to the tour operator prior to or at the time of final payment for the applicable booking.

• For the Iceland component, costs are based on a wholesale exchange rate of 85 ISK to $1AUD. Should this change by more than 3% we reserve the right to change costs.

• The deposit for this tour is $1,000. An additional payment of $5,000 is required at 30/6/17 (or if later, upon booking).

• For those who have not booked by 30/6/17, $5,000 must be included with your deposit.

• Final payment for the tour is required 120 days out from departure.

• Costs are based on category 3 cabin, twin share for the expedition cruise. The cabins include an en-suite and porthole.

• The cost for a single supplement on the expedition cruise may or may not be available however it is most likely to be double the cost of twin share option. It is possible, subject to availability, that a single supplement for the expedition cruise may be available at 1.6 times the cost of twin share. Please check if this is of interest to you. (Cost to be confirmed).

• Triple and quad share options may be available on lower cabins on the expedition cruise– let us know if this interests you at time of booking.

• Please contact us for Business Class international flights which are subject to availability. The approximate, additional cost on top of the tour cost from Sydney or Melbourne is $6,000.

• Costs are based on 10 people travelling. If less than people book on the tour, we reserve the right to increase costs for the Iceland component

• The Vessel used in Expedition Tours carries onboard service providers, which may include medical staff, spa personnel, or entertainers who operate as independent contractors. Their services and products are charged as Optional Extras and they contract directly with you to provide any products and services you request. Neither the Tour Operator nor the Carrier is responsible for these Optional Extras and will not be liable for the acts or omissions of these service providers.

• Shore excursions on Expedition Tours (“Shore Excursions”) are subject to their own set of terms and conditions, separate and apart from these Terms, and may be reserved after an Expedition Tour has been booked and confirmed. On occasions, you may be asked to pay for certain aspects of the tour within 7 days of booking. An example may be a river cruise within our overall program. A booking may be accepted on a share room basis on the condition that the person requesting the share reservation agrees that we accept no responsibility for any incompatibility between the persons sharing and no guarantee is given that a share room will be available. If not available, at the time of final payment you agree to pay the single supplement. If you choose to pay a single supplement for a tour and on an occasion due to non availability, a single room cannot be provided, a refund will be made for any night that a single room was not available. 2. If 30 days or less remain before departure 100% of the tour cost will be charged. [Depending on the reason for cancellation, these charges may be recoverable under your travel insurance policy].
