Some good news, the winter solstice has taken place so we going back to the sun, so we can look forward to warmer days and for the ladies that means summer dresses will be back in the next coming months, and boy do we miss them. Speaking of ladies I would like to welcome our new columnist Ninya van Zyl to the ICED* Family which is growing larger every month. We have a new fea-ture that kicks off this month, the Iced* Monthly Poster and I sincerely hope all the guys and girls out there enjoy it. Recent study shows that gamers are social:Twitch, the web’s premier space for live streaming of video games and e-Sports, has partnered with LifeCourse Asso-ciates to study the social habits of gamers and the findings are fascinating. The study, results of which were published on May 15, 2014, showed that gamers are extremely social.For example, gamers state that friends are a top priority in their lives, and strong majorities of gamers report that spending time with their families is a top priority for them. Additionally, gamers are more likely than the general population to make use of cutting-edge technology, such as tablets, smart phones, and other gadgets, to engage with media of all types.

Given these findings, it is no coincidence that Twitch provides a centralized location where gamers of all ages and backgrounds--from all around the world--can go for social interaction and game-related media content. Not only can gamers come to Twitch to interact with each other and participate in e-Sports, but they can experience the broad universe of video game media at their own pace, and together.

Do you think gamers are social?

The buy or rent debate was highlighted recently in an online research survey conducted by Columinate on behalf of Private Property. Of the 400 people polled, 202 respondents were asked questions about John, a fictitious 35-year-old male who owned the property that he and his family lived in. The remaining 198 respondents were asked the same questions but their story read differently and in this instance John rented the property.The two groups were asked what words they associated with John’s current living situation and while 60 percent believed that it was responsible to own property, forty six percent of the other group said that the decision to rent property was unwise.Interestingly, 46 percent of those polled about the rental scenario related the word affordable with rental property although 27 percentof the same group did believe that the decision to rent rather than buy was irresponsible.There are of course different reasons why people rent property. For many it is a case of affordability. Ask anyone who has bought a new home and most will tell you that the first couple of years are financially tough. In addition to the deposit and costs associated with buying a new home, there are a number of hidden expenses. Homeowners are also at the mercy of the banks and if the interest rate goes up, they have to pay more on their monthly instalments, unlike tenants whose rent traditionally only increases on an annual basis.In the long-term, however, homeowners hold all the cards. In addition to the stability that homeownership brings, they also have a tangible asset, which, if handled correctly will lead on to bigger and better things. We all want the finer things in life and although most of us start small, experience shows that the earlier people invest in property the sooner they are able to afford their dream home.While the results of the survey reveal that most people accept that young people are going to rent property, this perception changes as people get older. The fictitious person who rented property in the story was 35 years old and 37 percent of those polled associated words like unwise, risk and irresponsible with this particular scenario. Only one percent of those who answered the same question in the belief that John owned the property associated the same words with property ownership.

This review is probably well overdue and for a good reason. This is maybe my least favorite release from Afrikaans pop sensation Die Heuwels Fantasties. That being said, a die-hard fan will have no issues with this, it has everything that previous releases had – great lyrical content, powerful synths and catchy melodies but I feel it lacks the passion of previous releases. The EP Wens jy was hier contains 5 brand new tracks including a collaboration track with Mandoza called Afrikaan as well as a track with Bok Van Blerk and Robbie Wessels entitled Toks en Tjops .

The CD contains 12 tracks including songs Deesdae, Beloofde land, Jonk tot more, Droom en ligte and more. There is also an additional extra entitled Live op Paul Cluver DVD which contains a fresh mix of old favorites such as Sonrotse, pill ever kersfees and Oorlewing101All and all for 150 bucks you can’t go wrong, an impressive package that you don’t see often in the SA music scene. I give this 6 pille out of 10

Compared to years past, E3 in 2014 played it safe. There were few resounding surprises, and the biggest thrills came from games coming out in the distant future. You’ll play faster, better, and stronger, yes, but not until TBC, 2015.While somewhat disappointing, this is to be expected in the year following a big hardware launch. There was a real sense that the industry is still in flux, straddling the line between the new gen-eration of consoles and the old. The direction the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 are heading in is still obscured; lost in the noise of sequel announcements and CG trailers.On the show floor, first-party games and console exclusives on the PS4 and Xbox One were mostly unadventurous. There was nothing on the scale of last year’s Titanfall or The Last of Us, no big ambitious AAA games promising to sell systems on a major scale.

It’s hard to come up with a satisfying conclusion about this year’s E3, as its most prolific games were largely familiar, and we’re still none the wiser as to the directions Sony and Mic-rosoft are going to take with their new consoles. Perhaps next year we’ll see more of Project Morpheus and weightier exclu-sives, and their identities will begin to take real shape beyond ‘core gaming machine.’But there was certainly something here to cater to all tastes - even if you’re sick of violent bombasting - and ignite some hot, fire-in-the-belly excitement for the games on show. It’s just a shame that more than anything, this year felt like an advertise-ment for what we’ll be playing at and shortly after E3 2015.
