Goals

7 libraries in 5 countries will co-create innovative ideas for common Nordic concepts for public libraries

Page 8: Icecamp2010

Next Library - Nordic Camps - Ice Camp 2010

3 focal points for main activities: I) STRATEGIC PERSPECTIVE ON LIBRARY INNOVATION

• The network is initiated by the strategic management fora of the network partners

• The starting point is a common Nordic strategic perspective which can develop creative contributions to library innovation in the Nordic countries

Page 9: Icecamp2010

Next Library - Nordic Camps - Ice Camp 2010

3 focal points for main activities: II) BUILDING IDEAS, COMPETENCES AND NETWORK

• Ideas and competences (knowledge, skills and attitudes) will be developed by involving library staff from the 5 project partners

• The creative camps will be the basis of new relations between library staff and hopefully co-operation in future networks and Nordic projects

About the camp – the framework

Page 21: Icecamp2010

Next Library - Nordic Camps - Ice Camp 2010

If, at some point you have questions about the process

• Write it down on a post-it and place it on the question wall

• We answer them all before we go home

Page 22: Icecamp2010

Next Library - Nordic Camps - Ice Camp 2010

Take breaks on your own

• If you need to go to the toilet, smoke etc.• If you cannot understand what is happening

"right now”, it's ok, but don't interrupt the proces

• If you are tired or for some reason need a break• Take a break on your own. Don’t take other

people away from the process

We need to be able to concentrate

Page 25: Icecamp2010

Next Library - Nordic Camps - Ice Camp 2010

Let’s get started

Page 26: Icecamp2010

Next Library - Nordic Camps - Ice Camp 2010

Structure of The Creative Platform

• four principles• one method: 3D cases that

implements the principles

Page 27: Icecamp2010

Next Library - Nordic Camps - Ice Camp 2010

Principle 1: No judgement

• The Creative Platform creates a confident and secure environment by applying the rule of NO JUDGEMENT:– Between participants– Of Ideas / output– Of process

Page 28: Icecamp2010

Next Library - Nordic Camps - Ice Camp 2010

Principle 1. No judgement (cntd.)- ideas are just ideas

• Ideas should not be judged• The purpose of an idea is to get

another idea• Follow the energy of an idea – not

the logic of it• help others give birth to ideas

Page 29: Icecamp2010

Next Library - Nordic Camps - Ice Camp 2010

Principle 1: No judgement (cntd.) - barriers that may stand in the way of

using all your knowledge

We all know the feeling of:

• Fear of making mistakes• Fear that it will not work• Fear of making wrong decisions• Fear of looking really stupid• Fear of losing control• All this leads us to choose the safe "NO“ or the dismissive "YES but"

Page 30: Icecamp2010

Next Library - Nordic Camps - Ice Camp 2010

Principle 1. No judgement (cntd.) - accept and use your mistakes

• Accept and work with your mistakes• You are supposed to make mistakes• Mistakes leads us to new ideas

Page 31: Icecamp2010

Let’s rehearse

Page 32: Icecamp2010

Next Library - Nordic Camps - Ice Camp 2010

Page 33: Icecamp2010

Next Library - Nordic Camps - Ice Camp 2010

Principle 2: Parallel Thinking

• The Creative Platform promotes concentration by using parallel thinking:– All participants – in total and in

groups - take every step of the process at the same time

– Everyone talks about the same at the same time

– Result: When we have finished a task, it's over and done with

Page 34: Icecamp2010

Next Library - Nordic Camps - Ice Camp 2010

Principle 3: Task focus

• The Creative Platform creates motivation by introducing Task Focus:– Never focus on participants – it is not

personal– Focus must be only on the task– One task one deadline!

Page 35: Icecamp2010

Next Library - Nordic Camps - Ice Camp 2010

Principle 4: Horizontal Thinking

• The Creative Platform creates wide usage of knowledge by introducing Horizontal Thinking:– Helps participants to break free of

their patterns– Focus on usage of knowledge across

disciplines

Page 36: Icecamp2010

Next Library - Nordic Camps - Ice Camp 2010

Principle 4: Horizontal thinking (cntd.)- your brain as a Library

Job/networking

Children

Food/vine/beer

House renovation

Family

Music/Party

Page 37: Icecamp2010

Next Library - Nordic Camps - Ice Camp 2010

Principle 4: Horizontal thinking (cntd.)- knowledge concept

• The classical (vertical) knowledge concept– Limits use of knowledge to only one

“shelve”• The horizontal knowledge concept

– uses knowledge from all “shelves”

Page 38: Icecamp2010

Let’s rehearse

Page 39: Icecamp2010

Next Library - Nordic Camps - Ice Camp 2010

Page 40: Icecamp2010

Next Library - Nordic Camps - Ice Camp 2010

One Method: 3D cases

• 3D cases are exercises that use both body, language and attitude to– Maintain a creative presence – Release energy and free space for

uninhibited use of knowledge

Page 41: Icecamp2010

Next Library - Nordic Camps - Ice Camp 2010

3D cases- the Body

• The body contains our knowledge and by moving our body knowledge is set free

• Using your body makes you experience things in a different way

• Using your body makes you communicate differently

• An energetic body focuses concentration and energy

Page 42: Icecamp2010

Next Library - Nordic Camps - Ice Camp 2010

3D cases- Language and Attitude

• Through language you maintain traditional mental patterns – BUT you can also use language to change them

• Never say NO ...• Never say YES BUT ...• Always say, YES AND ...• Accept the offers you get, in terms of ideas -

and use them• Changing the attitude provides energy

and motivation

Page 43: Icecamp2010

Summary of the layers of The Creative Platform

• 4 Principles1. No judgement2. Parallel thinking3. Focus on task – one task one deadline4. Horizontal thinking

• 1 method: 3D cases that implements the principles

Page 46: Icecamp2010

• It's just a matter of seeing and accepting them

• We need to train it

Phase 4:What about the users?

• User involvement• Shape your idea with a user-

perspective• What do the users get out of it?• How will the user see it?• Get feed-back from the users• Method: real people / personas

Page 109: Icecamp2010

Next Library - Nordic Camps - Ice Camp 2010

Personas:

• are fictional but realistic characters, representing different groups of citizens

• provide you with a broader picture of needs and wants of a diverse group of citizens

• personas sharpen focus on user groups' needs and wants while developing your ideas

Page 110: Icecamp2010

Next Library - Nordic Camps - Ice Camp 2010

Personas – Peter 25 years• Peter is 25 and works as a

carpenter• He loves football and is a

Beckham-fan• He lives with his girlfriend

Lisa, who works in a kindergarten

• He loves to go out with friends – almost every weekend

• In five months Peter is going to be a dad

• Mom says: “I just wish he would spend a little more time reading”

Page 111: Icecamp2010

Next Library - Nordic Camps - Ice Camp 2010

Task: Using personas

• Choose and study a persona• Practice to be a persona yourself • Look at the theme with the eyes of a persona

- why is your topic a must for the citizens? - how can the user be involved?- what would they be interested in?- What do you want to ask the personas/what

information do you need?• Prepare presentation for citizens / personas• Prepare for pitch• Pitch in pairs – group vs personas and vv.

How do we do it? (what actions should we take to make it happen?)

Page 123: Icecamp2010

What difference does it make?

With whom do we do it? - partners and competencies?

What is the difference/result the activities will make – to the society and the citizens

The most important themes in the challenge

- The userdriven library, where you can define your needsThe public can influence and define the form and the content of their library. The staff need to be openminded, bring in the users, and shape the library for the future, both physical and digital.

- Partnerships, new ways of cooperatingUsing new connections to bring the non-users into the library. Use experts and partners not traditionally known to the library, and create new services. Also let the library be an arena for others.

- Connecting people, on their terms

Page 140: Icecamp2010

You may say that I'm a dreamer

But I'm not the only one

when all the people come together

then the library will keep living on

• Bridging the physical and the virtual
