“Interpreting Icebreaker’s functional brief was only part of the story. The real challenge was deciphering the essence of the brand and culture and producing a design which brought this to life within

the space. Icebreaker came with a wonderfully powerful message

– that adventures in nature help to strengthen our subliminal bonds with nature, as well as between ourselves and others. This message

is boiled down to ‘born in nature, worn in nature’ and that’s the key driver for the concept.”

Ofparticularimportancetotheprojectwastherealisationoframmedearthwallsbuiltwithlocalsoils.

WorkingcloselywithBioBuildwequicklyidentifiedthatthesoilaroundPonsonby’sMcKelvieStreetwouldn’tgiveusthecertificationwewanted-afterallwewerehand-pickinghowthefinalpatterningwouldlook.

Followingsomeresearch,weendedupgoingtoaquarrysiteinMuriwai,andaftervarioustrials‘settled’onthecertificationpatternyoucanseepictured.

Withtheaestheticdecided,thenextmajorchallengecameincartingthesoiluptoIcebreaker’sthird-storeyoffices.Thesubcontractorpersuadedalocalfootballteamtoliftthemanycubicmetresofsoilupthethreeflightsofstairsasafundraiser.

Placingsuchanimmenseweightthreestoreysupintheairwasafirstforourrammed-earthsubcontractor,thestructuralengineerandourselves;callingforsomeinnovativedetailingandtesting.Eventually,wearrivedata90mmthickrammedearthveneerstructurallytiedbackandbracedtoatimberframedsubstructure.

Theresultisawonderful,highperforming,tactile,calming,material,addingatextureanddepththroughoutthefit-out.

We wanted the concept of connection to nature to be about the sensory experience of real tactile natural materials, not graphic images and representations. So instead of a pallette of tussock and schist we focussed on natural local vernacular materials.

2 MAKE YOURSELF COMFORTABLEConsciouslyvoidofatraditionalreceptionarea,visitorsareimmediatelyimmersedintothe‘honeypot’–Icebreaker’scommunal,socialhub.Agreenandwarmspace,withviewsoverPonsonbyRoad,theareaincorporatesbreakfast-barinteraction,soft-furnishedbenchseatingandinformallargemeetingspaces,inacaféenvironment.ThespaceoffersaglimpseintothecamaraderieencouragedbytheIcebreakerculture.

3 WORN IN NATUREEnteringtheWorninNatureside,externalvisitorsaremetwithfiveopportunitiestointeractwiththebrand’sfivekeymarkets,throughthehighly-stylisedclient-facingmeetingrooms’designs.TheAdventureTravel,Yoga,Hunting&Fishing,AlpineandTrailmeetingroomsaredefinedbyaneclecticcollectionofauthenticpre-lovedandfoundobjects–eitherdonatedbyIcebreakerstafforsourcedbythescoutingdesignandclientteamscouringthecountry’sopshopsandantiquestoresonroad-tripsfromNorthcotetoPaeroa.

4 BORN IN NATURETransitioningtotheBorninNatureside,thehalfofthefloorplatededicatedtothe‘preconsumer’userofthespace,thedesignfocusesontheoriginsofthewoolandtheproductionsideoftheIcebreakerbusiness.Immortalisingthefamiliesandfarmerswhosupplythebrand’sfactory-lines,Icebreaker’siconicsouthlandshearingstationsandfarms,NewZealand’snumerousadventureplaygrounds,andthestaff,wholiveandbreathethebrand.ThedesignincorporatesframedphotographsofthesefamiliesandiconicrescueditemsfromIcebreaker’sformerheadquartersinWellington.

Pitchedshed-formmeetingrooms,cladinweatherboardtimber,individualmeetingroomsandlargeopenplanworkplacestationscreateadiverseworkingenvironmentforIcebreaker’sstaff.

Continuing the concept of connection to nature, we brought the adventure landscape into social areas around the workplace.

WorkingcloselywithGreenAir,aplantscapespecialist,weselectedspecificplantspecieswhichwouldbeconducivetothrivinginashelteredenvrionment,wouldbeofrelativelylowmaintenance,andwouldmimicthenativeNewZealandlandscape.

Worn in Nature - External Meeting Rooms“WewoketheIcebreakerprojectteamupat5amtocomeonaroadtripwithus.We’dphonedaheadtoop-shopsandantiquestoresinPaeroa,askingthemtoopenearlyforus...Atonepointduringthesetrips,we’dpackedahatchbacksofull,thattherewasanantlerstickingouttherearsidepassengerwindow.”

Theseexternal-facingmeetingroomsaredesignedtointerpretIcebreaker’sfivekeymarkets:AdventureTravel,Yoga,Alpine,TrailRunningandHunting&Fishing.Thehardandsoftfitoutsofeachspaceprovideatactileandrealconnectiontotheactivitytheyrepresent:

Adventure Travel - Designedtoexpresstheessenceofawelltravelledcollector’sstudycontainingallmannerofartifactsthatwesourcedfromaroundthecountry,suchasavintagecollectionofNationalGeographicsandWorldBooks,aglobeandvintagecamerafromandfounderJeremyMoon’spersonaltravelcases.

Yoga - Designedtosuggestacontemplativestudiospace,thewallsarelinedwithsoftfabrics,themeetingtableispairedwithcushionedottomans,andawatchfulBuddha,re-homedfromtheWellingtonoffice.

Alpine - Designedwithavaulted,perforatedmacrocarpaceilingreminiscentofauniversityskiclub,theAlpineroomrehousesvintageskisandappareldonatedbyIcebreakeremployees.Locallydesignedchairsareupholsteredinaquiltedfabric,suggestiveofaprèsskiwear.

Trail Running - Designedtoimbueasenseofrunningunderatreecanopy,theceiling’scustomperforatedleafdetaildappleslighttomimicdiffusesunlight.AloosegravelandboardwalkfeaturereferencesDOCtrails.

Hunting & Fishing - TheHunting&Fishingroomincorporatespanelledwallsandceilings,astaghead,peltsandChesterfieldtubchairstoreferenceatraditionalhunter’slodge.

Born in Nature - Internal Meeting RoomsDesigningaBorninNature‘side’oftheofficegaveustheopporunitytoacknowledgetheoriginsofthewool;fromtheshearingshedstothefarmersandfamiliesthatownthem.Icebreakersupplieduswithimagesoftheirsuppliersbusyatworkontheirfarms,intheirshearingsheds,oroftheirstaffvisitingthefarmers’homes.Takinginspirationfromthepitchedroofofatraditionalshearingshed,weintroducedtheseformsintotheopenplanworkplace,creatingtheShearingShedandShearers’Quartersmeetingrooms.

ThevariousobjectswithinthemeetingroomsareauthenticsalvageditemswhichhavebeenrelocatedfromtheirformerWellingtonhome;theshears,bundleofwoolandframedphotographshaveallbeenrescuedandrelocatedintothisnewhome.
