PW Quilt Making Day! We had a couple of fun days cutting, pressing, and sewing! A group of Linn Church women and two from other churches, under the guidance of Roxane Ashcraft are making quilts to donate to a new home that “Exploit No More” has been able to purchase as a location for girls that have been victims of human
trafficking. The home is scheduled to be open in Decem-ber in Milwaukee.
The Issue: Human trafficking is often perceived as a problem that only happens overseas. The reality is that it happens here in the United States. It happens in every Wisconsin county. 79% of human trafficking cases in Wisconsin occur in Milwaukee. 92% of the Milwaukee cases involve female youth. This remodeled home will
be for girls ages 12-17 that are escaping the hu-man trafficking that they have been forced into.
We hope we can give these girls some hope and com-fort and they are thought of and cared for by many in their new home!
Another sewing day is planned—if you can help out, that would be great! Mon. Aug. 7, stop in anytime from
9am-4pm.
Cents-Ability originated in 1976 as “Two-Cents-A-Meal,” a project begun by Presbyterian Women to involve individuals and families in a corporate re-sponse to world hunger. Over the years, presbyteries have developed similar programs entitled Pennies for Hunger, Nickel-A-Meal, etc. Many of these pro-grams benefit local hunger ministries as well as the national and international
projects of the Presbyterian Hunger Program. (PHP).
These small acts of faithfulness can add up: One hundred persons in a congre-
gation will contribute $180 a month at two cents a meal. That’s $2,160 dollars a year.
Here at Linn Church we encourage you to pick up a Centsability container in the fellowship hall and contribute some loose change during the week or drop some change in on Sunday morning!
For the past year, the Vision 2020 committee has been hard at work discussing the future of Linn Church. Mem-bers Scott Gump, Bill Leonard, Bob Winter, Pat Oblak, Ed Emma, and Pastor Terry Hennesy have come together and developed what they feel are the first steps towards
the future.
By the year 2020, Linn Church will accomplish three main goals:
Growing our Community Identity Average 150 people at Sunday worship
Getting there: in 2013 our avg. was 100. In 2017 our average is 121
Gather new families to achieve a median age of 50 years
Establish new mission initiatives in the community
While we continue with the Rummage Sale, Food Pantry and many other mission pro-jects, we have added Tree House.
Growing our Christian Education Ministry Gather 40 children and teens on Sundays; 30 on Wednesdays
Linn Kids already average 28 on Wednesdays!
Offer 2 Sunday and 2 Weekday Classes for Adults
Increase CE Director to Full Time
A new era begins as we welcome a New Director of Children and Youth
Growing our Financial Commitment Update, improve, expand facilities [See Phase One below!] Increase yearly General Budget to $250,000
Engage in a Capital Campaign to raise $250,000 [See Phase One below!]
Phase 1: Extending Hospitality to All The Vision 2020 Committee’s first goal was to Engage in a Capital Campaign to raise $250,000 (throughout multiple phases). Phase 1 will provide Linn Church with the neces-sary updates in order to Extend Hospitality to All as mentioned in our mission statement. The total cost of Phase 1 will be approximately $100,000. Phase 1 is to include the following updates:
Driveway: Widen the entrance/exit to allow for better flow of traffic, lighting on both sides of the driveway, and replacing new trees on both sides.
Sign: The new sign for Linn Church will now be perpendicular to Willow Road to allow for better exposure.
Narthex & Hallways: The Narthex, hallway near offices, and offices will all be updated with new flooring. The Narthex will also be updated with new furniture to provide a welcoming area for fellowship.
Bathroom Updates: Both men and women’s bathrooms will be updated with all new flooring, fixtures, paint, etc.
Mission Pledge: 10% of the total budgeted amount of Phase 1 will be pledged to a mission of the committee’s choice (TBD).
History at Linn Church By Walter York
I think the year was 1981. Mrs. Diane Thompson came to us and asked if we knew anyone who could take a Vietnamese boy, Hung, that the county could not find a home for. We had Cambodian children living with us at the time and we had one extra bed in the basement. We did have triple bunk beds in one room too. We said it would be up to the others if he could live with us. They said “no” initially because he was the enemy and they could not live with him. Mrs. Thompson came and talked to them, because she was the one who taught them English. She arranged for Hung to come and talk with them for a couple of hours. Soon they realized he was not the enemy and that he had been forced out of his country by the
Viet Cong, just like they were forced out of their country.
I give much credit to people at our church who taught them all of love of Christ which was different than their upbringing taught them. They all lived together in our house for one school year. They got along just fine except for some disagreements, just like any brothers would have. Our son, Bart got along fine with all of them too. At the end of the school year, Hung got in touch with his brother, who had been able to get to California. I believe he was a doctor, but I am not sure. He was able to join his brother and thanked everyone for helping him here. We have not heard from him since, but I have confidence he has
settled in just fine!

Pick up the book News of the World by Paulette Jiles and join the Linn Church Book Group for their Sep-tember dis-
cussion group. The group will review this book on Thursday, Sept. 14th at 4:00 p.m.
The book:
In the aftermath of the Civil War, an aging itinerant news reader agrees to transport a young captive of the Kiowa back to her people in this ex-quisitely rendered, morally complex, multilayered novel of historical fiction from the au-thor of Enemy Women that ex-plores the boundaries of family,
responsibility, honor, and trust.
Thank you, Pastor Terry!
You have been so helpful to me in setting up Self-Development of Peo-ple Workshops in Milwaukee. You have so many great friends and con-nections in the Milwaukee Presby-tery and everyone thinks so highly of you that people have been incredibly willing to help me. I have heard so many people praise you and that they sincerely value your friendship that I want our congregation to be aware of that, although we are al-ready. In gratitude, Sarah Jane Moore Midwest Task Force PCUSA Self-Development of People Committee (SDOP)
