Transportation Engineering
J. Wright
This addition to the ICE Textbook series explores the transport of people, goods andinformation throughout history and considers how transport can meet the needs of the future.
Covering rail, air, road and water, it examines the idea that transport needs are based on the concept of supply and demand and that modes of transport must, therefore, have a “life-cycle”.
This book also explores the economics of transport and the importance of considering price, convenience and safety of new and existing modes of transport, as well as the impact that the recession has had on preferred modes of transport, e.g. an increase in people cycling instead of driving, using the internet to communicate instead of travelling overseas.

Practical Road Safety Auditing explores the systematic process for checking the safety of new and improved road schemes for the benefit of future road users.
An effective Road Safety Audit ensures that all highways schemes operate as safely as is practicable by minimising the chance of future collisions and reducing the risk in their severity. The third edition of Practical Road Safety Auditing provides engineers with clear and comprehensive guidance regarding the new Certificate of Competency, launched by the Highways Agency as part of the new Safety Audit Standard in the Design Manual for Roads and Bridges.
Not only will a successful Audit help road users such as pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists, bus users, equestrians and those with visual and mobility impairments, but an understanding and appreciation of an efficient Road Safety Audit will also improve design and evaluation processes for both new and existing road schemes across the world.
This new edition shares the latest theory and practice from regions such as Europe, South East Asia, Australasia, the Middle East, Canada and the Americas, using real-life examples and case studies of successes and failures to enable the reader to apply best practice to their own road scheme.
Practical Road Safety Auditing includes:
• up-to-date new research and control data from the industry to help readers carry out a successful Road Safety Audit
• new Certificate of Competency requirements for engineers in the UK and a brief discussion of practice in other countries
• coverage of other types of design audits, including technical, cycle, pedestrian, mobility, Non-Motorised User Audit and Quality Audit
• current issues and legal implications of the Road Safety Audit process.
Written by practising Road Safety Auditors, who between them have carried out over 2,000 Road Safety Audits, this book will teach, inform and guide all practitioners commissioning audits, those carrying them out, and those whose schemes are being audited.

Worked Examples for Buildings:EN 1990 to EN 1997 and UK National Annexes
Edited by K. Ranasinghe
This book is the fi rst in a series of practical design guides to Eurocodes, which will complement the Designers’ Guides to the Eurocodes. Worked Examples for Buildings provides extensive worked examples for the design of typical everyday building elements and assemblages, covering multiple Eurocodes to refl ect the processes involved in designing a real structure.
Worked Examples for Buildings: EN 1990 to EN 1997 and UK National Annexes covers the basis of design, loading, concrete, steel, composite steel and concrete, timber, masonry and foundation designs. This book also provides examples of designing the structure of complete buildings. Unlike most Eurocode guides, which only cover individual codes relevant to specifi c elements, this book takes a through-project approach, referring to multiple Eurocodes in order to refl ect the real process of designing a complex structure.

Practical Guide to Using the CDM Regulations 2015 Teamwork not Paperwork
T. Putsman and P. McArthur
Teamwork not Paperwork draws together principles of how to deliver quality projects and explains in a practical, easy to read guide, how to apply them based on an innovative risk management model. More paperwork isn’t the solution. Structured development of the team, establishing a clear purpose and promoting a collaborative culture, and then letting the team get on with the job is the key message of this book.
Most construction professionals (and their clients) are too busy to study the principles of project risk management. This book provides them with a concise summary of all the relevant issues and an outline of how to apply the principles on a project by project basis.

Health and Safety: Questions and Answers, 2nd edition
P. Perry
The amount of knowledge required on the subject of health and safety is constantly growing as new and revised laws are implemented, best practice improves, and guidance changes. The subject range of this book is therefore broad and each chapter deals with a specifi c health and safety topic, with a practical, no-nonsense approach.
Legal requirements are covered, as is best practice, approved codes of practice and the latest guidance. Often a quick reminder of an employer’s key responsibilities is all that is needed and this book will provide an invaluable easy reference guide for those everyday questions.

CDM 2015: Questions and Answers, 3rd editionA practical approach
P. Perry
Although the CDM Regulations fi rst came into effect in 1995 and were revised in 2007, there is still widespread misunderstanding as to what project teams should do in order to satisfy their legal obligations. Now new regulations are expected to become law in April 2015.
CDM 2015: Questions & Answers is a timely and practical handbook which provides best practice solutions to a comprehensive set of frequently asked questions about the regulations. Explaining the updates clearly and logically, it includes numerous case studies to show how the theory works in practice.
Appendices include checklists and templates to help in the quick and smooth implementation of the new regulations.

Risk Assessments: Questions and Answers, 2nd edition
P. Perry
The term ‘risk assessment’ is all too familiar in business and applies not only to health and safety but also other business processes. The Turnball Report focused the minds of many businesses on risk management, but while we may know that we must undertake risk assessments in health and safety, there is often a lack of knowledge and understanding on how to do it and what is suitable and suffi cient.
This book aims to provide the necessary guidance to assess risk effectively. It offer readers comprehensive best practice guidance to interpreting the many queries which arise from offi cial legislation.

The FIDIC (Fédération Internationale des Ingénieurs-Conseils) forms of contract are used extensively throughout the world to further the aims of the construction industry at large. In both the developed and the developing world they play a crucial role in ensuring that project objectives are satisfactorily achieved.
In a perfect world, projects are completed on time and on budget, affording the benefi ciaries the advantages of the designed project. As long as contracting is the modus operandi, such a scenario can only occur through effi cient and effective use of those contracts. Quality contract administration is of paramount importance. Numerous books have been written on this subject with the aftermath of contractual confl ict in mind. Such books dwell on the methods by which disputes can be resolved, with emphasis placed on the legal aspects of contract administration.
The FIDIC Quick Reference Guide takes a different approach. Rather than solving a problem after the confl ict has occurred, this series of books and associated electronic aids set out how to prevent the problem from occurring in the fi rst place.
The FIDIC Quick Reference Guide series: concentrates on two issues: what to do and when to act establishes a simple sub-clause by sub-clause format to enable easy referencing designed to be used alongside the project’s contract form provides a quick overview of the actions to be taken and the time in which to
take such actions.
The FIDIC Quick Reference Guide series provides a valuable tool for practitioners who are either preparing or using the contract forms, as it directs the user through this minefi eld of directly, or often implied, cross-referenced sub-clauses.

Discover how NEC3 enables successful project delivery: neccontract.com
NEC3 contracts are a diverse range of defi nitive end-to-end project management contracts that empower users to deliver projects on time, on budget and to the highest standards.
NEC promotes a unique, collaborative approach and has been used to successfully deliver some of the highest profi le projects in the world, including the London 2012 Olympics and Crossrail.
NEC3 Contracts
NEC3 is a family of contracts unique in offering a complete end-to-end project management solution for the entire project life-cycle; from planning, defi ning legal relationships and procurement of works, all the way through to project completion, management and beyond.
Our contracts are designed to save you time and money while increasing standards by encouraging collaborative working in order to achieve shared project objectives between all parties. This philosophy promotes a less adversarial approach, decreasing the chance of time consuming and costly disputes.
NEC3 is the only form of contract to offer an integrated and complete procurement solution - whether you are involved in works, services, supply or a mixture of the three. It has won praise and support from across the public and private sectors.
Construction Clients’ Board endorsement of NEC3:
The Construction Clients’ Board (formerly Public Sector Clients’ Forum) recommends that public sector organisations use the NEC3 contracts when procuring construction.
Standardising use of this comprehensive suite of contracts should help to deliver effi ciencies across the public sector and promote behaviours in line with the principles of Achieving Excellence in Construction.
NEC3: April 2013 Edition complete family of contracts

NEC3 Books
NEC3 Practical Solutions
R. A. Gerrard and S. Kings
This practical book sets out to compare the increasingly popular NEC family of contracts with other construction industry standard forms. The NEC compared and contrasted will assist all levels of professionals involved in procurement in the construction industry to make informed choices and give balanced advice when deciding which contract to use for a particular project.
Collaborative working has been embraced by both public and private sector clients and their professional teams and can arguably now be seen as the norm. Thus in order to facilitate this, NEC has become a mainstream “standard form contract” across all sectors of the construction industry and beyond. The topic in principle remains very similar to the topic addressed in the 1st edition of the book in 2002, but with full recognition of the important nuance in relation to increased collaborative working.

Launched in the early 1990s, the NEC is a truly groundbreaking concept which has revolutionized the way construction projects are procured and managed, resulting in major benefits in time, cost and quality.
In order to take full advantage of the NEC’s benefits it is necessary to introduce a culture of partnering and changes in working practices and procedures.
Managing Reality is a series of books written by NEC experts well versed in using NEC3 in industry that explains how NEC3 can be used to optimum benefit in everyday environments. Ultimately, this suite of books forms the complete and authoritative guide to getting the most from NEC3 for your projects.
The books are based on usage of the NEC’s core document – the Engineering and Construction Contract – although the principles and procedures they discuss apply equally across all the documents in the NEC suite. In particular, the books discuss the third edition of the NEC3 Engineering and Construction Contract – ECC.
Managing Reality, Second edition, places great emphasis on offering ‘practical tips’ at appropriate points in the text and highlighted examples. Standard forms are included with their usage explained together with checklists.
Managing Reality, Second edition, are practical manuals designed to aid both existing and new users in implementing the NEC, vital for anyone involved in preparing, administering or contributing to a NEC contract.
Managing Reality Book 5 Managing Procedures gives step-by-step guidance on how to apply the most commonly used procedures, detailing the actions needed by all parties to comply with the contact. Anyone administering the contract will benefit from this book.

This fourth edition of Floods and Reservoir Safety provides authoritative guidance on flood protection standards, flood magnitude and freeboard-guidance which is essential for engineers who are responsible for the design and inspection of reservoirs.
In the period since the publication of the previous edition, there have been changes to extreme flood estimation in the form of rainfall depth–duration–frequency and rainfall–runoff models, reservoir safety legislation, and adoption of a risk-based approach to that legislation. Floods and Reservoir Safety, fourth edition, addresses these changes and in particular includes amendments to:
• legislativechangesinEngland,Wales,ScotlandandNorthernIreland
• theFlood Estimation Handbook(FEH)(IOH,1999)
• recentresearchintoextremerainfall
• guidanceonriskassessmentforUKreservoirs
• researchonwaveovertoppingofembankments.
A desire for brevity and clarity of principle has led to this document being relatively concise. Floods and Reservoir Safety should be read in conjunction with the latest revision of the FEH, in particular those sections that apply to reservoir safety flood inflow estimation.
A glossary of terms used in this guide is included with appendices, together with a schematic diagram, showing the relationship between the principal terms in the guide.
Floods and Reservoir Safety is essential reading for those individuals who bear the personal responsibility that comes from being appointed to the statutory panel of engineers qualified to design and also inspect reservoirs in the UK.

Sustainable Water Delivering Sustainable Infrastructure series
Edited by R. Fenner and C. Ainger
Sustainable Water identifi es the key sustainability issues for the water sector, their common principles, and shows how they can be applied in practice.
Written in an accessible style, it aims to understand sustainability, as it applies to water; to identify and apply the critical changes needed to provide more sustainable solutions; and to embed these into a tradition of excellence - delivering suffi cient water through a good service, of the right quality, and at affordable cost – as straightforwardly as possible.
The book is for water sector practitioners - mainly engineers, but also all the other built environment professionals who play vital roles in creating and maintaining water services - who know generally of the challenges of sustainability, but have not studied the subject.
