RHIANNON ELANDRIS
GREETINGS FROM YOUR BARON AND
BARONESS
RHIANNON ELANDRIS
Greetings onto the good people of the Rhydderich Hael,
We hope this time finds you all warm and well. Now is the time to rest and repair, to toil and try new things. We en-
courage all to display your works by preparing an entry into the Pentathlon A&S competition to be held at Ice Dragon.
Or, if you are so inclined, create an award medallion for Kingdom 12th night. Fighters, fencers now is the time to hone
your skills and your reflexes for spring campaigns. We hope to see many of you at the gaming night at the Alt
Theater on the 6th, Cooks guild/A&S day on the 8th or at our Baronial 12th night celebration. Or perhaps we will see
you at the Aethelmearc Rattan Championship Dec 14 in Thescorre (Perry NY) (Wolfgang and Katerin Starcke are cook-
ing!) or Kingdom 12th Night January 11th in Heronter.
We encourage every member of Our Orders to meet with us on December 4 at Fight Practice to share your
advice about who you feel worthy to join your ranks. Here are the scheduled times:
6:30 Tangled Rose
6:45 Dragon's Combatant
7:15 Golden Bee
7:45 Dragon's Concordium
8:00 VOID
8:30 NULL
Speaking of dance….ok, so Isolda wants to speak of dance…Here are the facts: We have a new member of the Barony
that is enthusiastically interested in period dancing. Isolda loves to dance, although she is sorely not skilled at it. There
are stories about times when there was dancing at every event. There are people in Our Barony who were there when
there was dancing at every event. There was chair dancing at Tiercelin’s vigil and it was really fun! Isolda therefore is-
sues a challenge! Folks of the Barony learn to do at least one dance and I will award you a token when you dance with
me at Baronial 12thwho learn more than one dance will have a greater prize at my hands! I will be speaking with Our
Dance Mistress and others to make sure that you have an opportunity to learn!
We wanted to thank all of you that have encouraged us to seek a fourth year as your Baron and Baroness. We have
gotten to know many of you so much more as we have interacted with the groups of friends, households, guilds, folks
who participate in varied activities and almost without exception have found you all to be dedicated to the Barony,
willing to help where needed, willing to step forward with little notice to help in a pinch, good advice givers, fierce de-
fenders of the Barony and the Kingdom, stellar event planners, amazing talents, filled with
hospitality, great cooks and pot-luckers and all around a joy to work with! Thank you for that
as it truly was the impetus for us to seek the additional year to serve you.
YIS CAROLUS LOKE ISOLDA FILIA GEORGII
ALL PAY HEED TO THE WORDS OF THE SENESCHAL
OF THE RHYDDERICH HAEL
Rhiannon Elandris
Today I get to sound all nice and official!
In accordance with the bright and shiny new Baronial Policies, Baronial Election Policy
Section, our sitting Baron and Baroness, Carolus and Isolda, wish to continue on for a
fourth year, which they announced in the last two Baronial Business Meetings, and have
appeared in the published minutes for the October meeting.
I have received the membership labels from corporate (thanks Cori!) and am preparing
the ballots as we speak. You should receive one in December. They are to be received by
me no later than 8:00pm during the January Baronial Meeting/12th Night Celebration, but
preferably before. They will be on post cards so they can be mailed to me, but I will also be
accepting them at any baronial activity I am attending. I will make sure to publish where
I’ll be throughout December on the e-list and on the Facebook group.
Ballots are of a simple Yes/No/Abstain format. Tallying will be performed by the Sene-
schal, Knight Marshal, and Pursuivant. If either of the others are unavailable I’ll pick re-
placements from the other officers. This is a simple majority vote. My ballot will not be
counted unless there is a tie.
Note that the B&B have just started their third year.
I please ask everyone to stand up and be counted. We have 156 members listed in the la-
bels, so each ballot counts!
As an additional note, please let me know if you have recently moved without having
notified corporate or may have an incorrect address for any reason as soon as possible so I
can make sure your ballot gets to you. I can be reached via Facebook, my personal email,
the seneschal officer’s email, the e-list, shouting across the room, or private conversation.
Messages attached to rapier or dagger blades, or arrows, bolts, axes, or other flying imple-
ments will only be accepted assuming the resulting wound proves not fatal.
Is ait an mac an saol.

Magnus, what the h*ll is this? Written by Lord Magnus de Lyons
Often people visit my little basement workshop and while digging around in the many tool boxes and
shelves find some gadget and ask, “Magnus, what the h*ll is this”? I’m a bit of a gadget/tool nut and I have
collected a respectable number of gizmos over the years. I consider most of them common place and often
forget that other folks have never heard of them, or have seen them but don’t really know what they are
for. The purpose of this (hopefully) ongoing series of articles is to dig out some of my collection and explain
what the gizmos are for and how to use them. I also plan to present a realistic view of how useful some of
things are when compared to cost and actual functionality. The only thing worse than a useless tool is a use-
less tool you paid a lot of money not to use. It is important to note I am not claiming status as some sort of
tool ninja. Many of these tools I have only a passing knowledge of and in some cases don’t even use for
their intended purpose. Hopefully I will manage to sneak in a few tips and techniques that people may find
useful as well. Finally, I plan to have a couple guest writers covering tools of their trade and I welcome read-
ers to write in with requests, questions, complaints, or write articles of their own. This month I dug deep
down into the bottom of my tool box and found a little white box labeled “Osborne Tools no. 1000 Lace
Cutter” or much cooler sounding, “Western Lace Cutter” (not sure if there is an Eastern Lace cutter).
What does it do?
Plain and simple, the lace cutter is designed to cut leather laces 1/8” to 3/8” wide from large pieces of suede
or grain leather (more on that later). The concept is that you feed the leather through the blade and with a
slow pulling motion create long, straight, perfect leather laces with almost no effort and very little swearing.
Just like magic!
What the h*ll do you need that much leather lace for?
In my opinion leather lace is more of a modern/western trend (I mean who didn’t own a lace fringed
leather jacket in the 80s…am I right?), but does find limited use in medieval-ish hobbies for lacing bits of
armor together, boot laces, weapon lanyards, leather braiding, mug straps, and so on. For me leather lac-
ing is that one expendable resource I am always out of and that is what brought me to buying this gizmo.
What do you get?
The basic tool comes in two parts a knife blade and a calibrated fulcrum…trust me it’s not as mind blowing
as it sounds. The knife blade part is literally just a craft knife (a.k.a. Xacto knife) handle with a wide flat
blade. The calibrated fulcrum is really just a slotted cylinder with an adjustable guide that is set with a
couple thumb screws to determine the width of the strap you are making. The fulcrum only determines
the width of the lace not the thickness of leather. The thickness of the leather is determined by the leath-
er you use to make the laces.
What else will you need?
In addition to the lace cutter you will need some leather to cut into laces. This tool works well with any
supple leather from suede to grain leather. For most of my leather laces I use Latigo because it is strong,
supple, and comes in brown, black and burgundy off the shelf requiring no additional coloring on my part.
Suede is good for braiding but does not have a lot of strength. Regular vegetable tanned leather will work,
but unless you want light tan or beige colored lace you will need to dye the leather (which honestly is
more of pain than it is worth). A pair of leather scissors is not a bad addition, but honestly any small
cutting you need to do you can do with the blade part of the tool. There are two ways to use this tool;
straight cuts and circular cuts. For straight cuts you will need a piece of leather the same length as the
lace you want to cut. Circular cuts are more involved so I will cover that later.
How do you use it?
Most of these tools come with a pretty decent set of instructions but often over simplify a couple steps
that can really leave you shaking your head. I plan to simplify the use of this tool a bit for the sake of
teaching people how to use it and in all honesty this is how I use it this tool whenever possible.
1: Set the depth on the calibrated fulcrum using the thumb screws. Depth is 100% preference based on
the project you are working on. The lower screw (blue) moves the guide (green) up and down; the up-
per screw (red) locks everything in place once the desired depth is achieved.
2: To get started you will need to cut a bit of a “leader” to start feeding through the tool. The initial cut
does not need to be straight and giving it a bit of a bevel will help things along. This step is briefly men-
tioned in the written instructions, but not clearly pointed out, and skipping it will add about five
minutes of confused head tilting as you try to force the leather into the tool.
3: Slip the leather into the slot of the fulcrum so that the leader is sticking out towards the knife slot.
The bottom of the leader should be at the same level as the knife slot. If the leader is too big the lace
will get jammed in the tool as you pull it. If it is too small the lace won’t cut straight and may break off.
4: Insert the knife part of the tool in the knife slot so that the leader and the remainder of the leather
are separated by the knife blade. Please excuse the rust all I had was an older blade.
5: Slowly pull the leather across the knife blade. The knife will start to cut the leather into a single
piece of lace. Continue to pull the leather through the tool until you reach the length you desire or run
out of leather. Make sure to pull on the leader and the remainder of the leather at the same time. If
you just pull the leader you will have a harder time cutting and if you if hit a snag the lace might snap
off.
7: Do a little happy dance you made a leather lace!
LACE MAKING GOD !
Pro-tips:
Sharp blades are important when cutting! If you have a dull knife blade this whole process gets hard-
er and a bit dangerous. When you cut your laces the process should not cause you to break a sweat
or turn your fingers black and blue. If the blade is not cutting the leather like butter you need a new
blade! The leather will dull your blade quickly so have a few extra blades on hand. The same can be
said for using old leather. Old leather is dry, much harder to cut, and will quickly dull your blades.
Using fresh leather is always easier and results in a better finished product.
Safety:
There is a knife involved in this process so there is a risk of injury. A sharp knife blade is an important
step in cutting safely (I think I said that already). If your knife blade is dull it makes cutting harder.
Harder cutting involves pulling, tugging, slipping, and then cutting of stuff other than the leather, fol-
lowed by tears and bad words the kids don’t need to hear. It is also important to remember that the
blade will go into the knife slot in either direction and if you are not paying attention it is possible to
insert the knife blade out. If you make this mistake when you go to put tension on the tool you will
drive your thumb into the knife blade! If you are the kind of person who does stuff like this take a
minute and mark the dull side of your blade with a permanent maker so you know which side is
which. I totally didn’t learn this by experience…
So what about that circular cutting thing you mentioned?
If you found this process easier than expected don’t worry there is more! The tool is actually designed to
cut a large square-ish piece of leather in a circular fashion so you can create really long lace without the
need for a long straight piece of leather. The process is basically the same, but you start by cutting a hole
in the center of the leather piece, cut your leader into that, and then start cutting in an outward circular
motion until you reach the desired lace length. This is a bit fiddly until you get the hang of it. I don’t use
this method very often for two reasons. One I am all thumbs and I find this process difficult enough that I
tend to avoid it. Secondly, and this is probably my failing, I find that cutting the lace like this puts a twist
into the final product that I have always found problematic with certain applications like braiding. I sug-
gest trying it once just to get a feel for it. If it works for you go for it, if not take the easy way out.
The breakdown:
Okay, so that is my introduction to the lace cutter, but how does the tool really measure up? Honestly I
don’t use this tool as often as I should. Part of that is because while I use a fair amount of leather lace I
find it easier to just buy a handful when I stop by the leather shop. Buying off the shelf is more expensive
than making my own, but saves me time. Buying off the shelf is not always worth the time savings be-
cause off the shelf lace products are often so old and dried out that they snap just looking at them. Plus
there are times when I need really long laces or laces of a certain material that I can’t buy off the shelf. I
forget how much this tool cost when I bought it, but a top end one goes for about 44 US dollars. The av-
erage leather worker will need to balance the hefty price tag with how much use this tool will see in their
shop. I have seen cheaper models but I have not used them and cannot speak for their quality.
Greetings all, from your friendly Knight Marshal. We are still practicing every Wednesday at the Lancaster Elks Club starting at 700pm going until 1000pm. We will continue to be in doors during the harsh winter months ahead. We will not be Practicing December 25th 2013 and January 1st 2014. We will start practicing again on January 8th 2014 as our first official practice of 2014. Please check the local Face-book group and other pages in the event of additional closing.
If you have had the opportunity to stop out to a practice in the past few weeks you have noticed many of the fighters trying out new fighting styles. As of late we have had a Great Sword epidemic sweep-ing through our practice list. We have also had a great number of fighters trying out many different two weapons forms. Many thanks to our local Knights for giving all of the fighters many new pointers and style critiques to help make us all better fighters. Our only hope that all of this new knowledge will reduce the bruises we receive and make us more rounded fighters.
December 14th our neighbors in Thescorre will be holding the Aethelmearc Kingdom Rattan Cham-pions Tourney. This is one of the last local fighting events of the year. This event will showcase some of the best fighters in not only the area but the Kingdom. All heavy fighters should take an opportunity to enter this tournament for an entertaining day of fighting that is sure to be a fun challenge their skills. As a fun note the theme of the event is French…..
To help break up the long dark winter that has settled on our lands, there shall be held once a month a fun tournament at our local practice. Each tournament shall be different and announced in three forms prior to the event. The three forms used to announce the tournament will be one by voice, two by the local Facebook page and third and finally the baronial news letter your best source of baronial news. The results will be made public on all three of the previously mentioned forms of communication. Victors of the tournaments will sign a scroll and will receive a small token periodically. The over all winner will be the fighter whose name appears the most on the scroll by December 2014. There will be no less and no more then 12 tournaments held in the upcoming calendar year. The overall winner of the tournament will be presented with gifts and the scroll signed by all other previous winners. This tournament is open to all heavy fighters who are present at the practice the tournament is being held at. If you have additional question you may feel free to beat them out of me your friendly knight marshal at all local events and practices.
Horatius
OFFICER’S REPORTS
We have had new fencers Brandon, Beth, Elizabeth, Meava (spelling ?) I apologize if that is not cor-rect, with us last week. And have a possible three more fencers in training. Everyone has been helping teach & marshal. I am very proud the fencing community’s effort. Currently we are pricing new heavy rapi-ers & procuring a few new gorgets for this influx of students.
I ran a Halloween Tourney which Lord Wolfgang won the prize was a bag of Penzie's Hot Chocolate.
I am hopeful we will have a holiday tourney at some point.
As always, join your fencers after fight practice at the Buffalo Brew Pub, for good food & conversation.
Your Servant

If you could include a note from the cooks guild: Katerin and I will be hosting a meeting of the Cooks Guild and anyone else who is interested at our place on Sunday December 8th from noon until whenever. It is 500 Old Niagara Rd, Lockport for those who have not been here before. We will be cooking various things, including an attempt at making bread with fresh barm from a batch of beer. Feel free to show up with a dish to pass, a project to work on or just questions and conversations. Newcomers welcome! ~Wolfgang
A&S - A little clarification about the Pent. Items that have been entered in other competitions can be entered in the 2014 Pent as long as they were finished after Ice Dragon 2013. Speaking of competitions, there are three coming up shortly. The first is the Royal Competition of Arts and Sciences, to be held on December 7th in the Dominion of Myrkfaelinn. The second is an Award Medallion Competition to be held at Kingdom 12th Night on January 11th in the Shire of Heronter. And the third is a period dessert competition, also to be held at Kingdom 12th Night. There are opportunities to show off your work and get feedback before Ice Dragon.
Web - Will be adding more information to the Ice Dragon site as it comes in from the autocrat and/or staff.
I have freshly printed SCA flyers to distribute. I will come to the next two fighting practices
with them, as well as the Baronial Game Night. I will also have guidelines on how to distrib-
ute them so you can feel comfortable putting them out.
We still need volunteers for the Welcoming Committee. I am not looking to make this anoth-
er subgroup with meetings and responsibilities. Rather I want the kind of people likely to
greet newcomers regardless of the circumstances. If you are interested in the tools I have to
offer let me know.
I need someone with a good digital camera and some free time going into the holidays to
give me a hand. Alternatively, and far less preferable, I could just borrow the camera. I
would like to digitalize the Gold Key, so we can all have an idea what is in it. This will be a
laborious project, but will help with logistics tremendously.
