Principal operational effects
on concrete
Mechanical Physicochemical
Mechanical
•cyclic effect of ice load
•ice–concrete contact pressure
•mechanical wear from water
Physicochemical
•thermal effect
•temperature variations and moisture effect
•surface erosion
•damages from chlorides action
Important
•Also drift velocity and concrete surface roughness affect abrasion degree.
Three abrasion stages have been singled out
• on the surface area – matrix abrasion
• in the transition zone – matrix abrasion and decaying of bulging out particles of coarse aggregate
• zones of stable abrasion – matrix abrasion and decaying of bulging out particles of coarse aggregate

The basic properties of concrete are:
•Uniaxial compression strength
•Density
•W/C ratio
• Frost-resistance class
•Modulus of elasticity
24
Experiment on abrasion of various concrete mixes is being held now.
25
that for selecting of hydraulic concrete mix with high ice abrasion resistance it is necessary to use:
• additive – silica – for strength increase
• more compact structure at the expense of: micro-fillers, air-entraining additives;
• reducing water-cement ratio accordingly to the recommended 0.28-0.35;
• the use of compact aggregate particles to obtain heavy concrete;
• to raise modulus of elasticity;
• to use polyurethane resin for the concrete surface layer protection;
• to modify by aggregate size as from the investigation experience there are contradicting facts concerning the use of coarse or fine aggregate.
