Your heart can’t heal what your eyes can’t see
Addiction counselors have become and have been referred to as healers,
therapists, case managers and compassionate human beings. Many of
you offer hope to those individuals and their families who have lost their
way in this life. Your jobs are not easy but you continue to heal
countless people who suffer from the malady of addiction. None of you
judge or condemn the unpredictable hysteria that goes in the lives of
the addict or their families. Instead you open up their eyes to the reality
of what addiction has done to them and their loved ones. You also intro-
duce them to what a sober lifestyle looks like. As a result of this eye
opening experience you have become the conduit of their healing. I am
sure that there are moments that you shake your head in dismay with
the client who has to go back out there again and again. Nonetheless
you continue your work in spite of everything because you believe in
what you are doing. Your commitment to this field is admirable and I
say “BRAVO” to each and every one of you for your tireless effort.
On another note I would like to thank others who have worked equally
as hard namely Ms. Kellie Gage who is our past president. She has been
such an inspiration to me and countless other who work in this field.
Not only has she inspired me but she has become a dear friend. Her
work is not over yet, she will continue to be my mentor and adviser. I
feel so honored and blessed to serve on the Illinois Certification Board.
I would also like to thank our Executive Director, Jessica Hayes and her
magnificent staff. Collectively they make our lives so much easier.
I also wanted to remind you the 19th Annual Fall Conference will be
held at the Rend Lake Conference Center on Oc-
tober 20th through the 24th so please save the date
and make it your goal to attend. I would be
delighted to meet you all.
In closing, I want to wish all of you blessings
from above and much happiness in your lives.
Stella Nicholson, CAADC

August…already! Where does the time go? Many reading this can tell me exactly where the time goes. It goes to family, work, clients, friends, and often too little to ourselves. We continue to do more and more in this fast-paced world. I truly hope there is some down-time, some decompress-time and some family-time, not just over the summer months, but as a part of your everyday lives. Following my stroke in 2011 this became very clear to me and it’s sad to think it took a rather large health event to teach me how to relax. A
commitment needs to be made to take care of yourself year round.
So, while you are penciling in ‘you’ time, let me tell you a little bit about what’s going on in the credentialing arena. We are growing! That’s what’s going on! We have new colleges applying for accredited training programs, we have new applicants coming in daily, we have agencies contacting us to discuss the potential of new credentials focusing on Military Cultural Competencies, Anger Management and Recovery Support Services-Education, just to name a few. ICB has also been very busy updating the Code of Ethics and the
Procedure Code. Be sure to check it out on page 11 of the Illinois Model.
A large portion of my time is spent in taskforce work, all having to do with the workforce and integrated systems of care. Where does the addictions counselor fit in? Everywhere! I have had the opportunity to bend the ear of legislators and the upper echelon of ‘those who make the rules’ in Illinois, sharing how ICB credentialed professionals make a difference with their specific skill sets. I have developed a one-pager outlining who we are, what we do and how we do it, and have had the opportunity to get this information into the hands of many who know, may not know and/or need to know how important you all are to the State. I have received supportive feedback and have listened to several ‘a-ha’ moments as those who were unaware of how credentialing truly works ‘get it’! It’s an exciting time for our members! I am painfully aware of the impact of the budget cuts and ACA implementation on many providers in the State. As an IADDA board member, I am kept abreast of the struggles your agencies are having and am able to be a part of the
efforts to effect change.
Staff are busy planning the 2014 Fall Conference to be held at the Rend Lake and Conference Center in Whittington, IL. Be sure to mark your calendars for October 20-24, 2014! We have a great line-up of presenters. Members of the ICB board of directors will also be in attendance, so please be sure to introduce yourselves. Speaking of the board, in the April newsletter I mentioned we would be saying goodbye to Valerie Arnett, Dona Howell and Sue Kirk as they fulfilled their terms. In this edition, I get to welcome to the
board both Frank Comber and Laura Garcia, in addition to welcoming back to the board, John Reese.
We have our work cut out for us as we navigate the changes that come with the implementation of the Af-fordable Care Act. Please know that your board, the staff and management of ICB continue to elevate and
solidify the importance of your role in this ever changing environment.

IC&RC Announces Updated Alcohol and Drug Counselor (ADC) Job
Analysis
IC&RC, the world leader in addiction-related credentialing, is pleased to announce the completion of its updated Alcohol and Drug Counselor Job Analysis (JA). IC&RC’s Alcohol and Drug Counselor credential is held by more
addiction counselors than any other credential of its kind.
A JA is the methodical process of determining what elements of practice and knowledge are important to assess as part of a certification examination and serves as the blueprint for the examination. It is the process that directly links an examination score to a specific job and ensures that an exam is valid, reliable, and legally defensible. To stay
relevant to current trends and practices, a JA must be updated every five to seven years.
The updated Alcohol and Drug Counselor Job Analysis will be used to develop a new examination to be adminis-tered by all IC&RC member boards in late 2014. More details regarding the first administration of the examination
will be forthcoming.
The new examination will include the following four domains:
• Screening, Assessment, and Engagement
• Treatment Planning, Collaboration, and Referral
• Counseling
• Professional and Ethical Responsibilities
Changes in the JA include combining the previous eight domains into four essential domains and inclusion of DSM-5
diagnostic criteria. The full exam content outline and updated reference list can be found here.
For more information on the first administration of this exam and all IC&RC’s testing policies and procedures,
please visit our examination page at http://professionals.internationalcredentialing.org/.
IC&RC is proud to stay in the forefront of the ever evolving field with the release of its updated ADC Job Analysis.

And We Thank You . . . .
While we start to plan and move forward with our goals here at ICB,
we would like to take this time to thank our outgoing board members. ICB
cannot extend enough Thanks You’s to Dona Howell, Valerie Arnett and Sue
Kirk, who have all gone above and beyond every expectation set forth. Dona is
the most effective and influential board member an organization could ask for,
Valerie proved she could stand her ground and make tough decisions as
President and Sue Kirk was there to offer all her support. Their dedication and
passion for the field is off the charts, it was a blessing to have you all guide our
organization in the direction that it was meant to go. ICB is stronger than ever
thanks to you. We will forever be grateful for all that you have contributed and
you have certainly set the bar for the incoming board members.
Speaking of new board members, let us also take this time to welcome
Frank Comber, and Laurie Garcia to the ICB Board and welcome back John
Reese. We are excited to have you on board. ICB has numerous projects on
the table, its great to know that we have a strong, knowledgeable board of
directors that will implement their skills to help ICB meet and exceed our
mission. So with that we will surge forward and continue our mission, because
“Its What We Do”.

Greetings,
Thank you for all that you do to support recovery! September is Recovery Month and as it draws closer, I am reminded that recovery is a process and a journey. The journey of recovery may begin with joining a self help group, a health or legal crisis, participating in treatment or a combination of factors. Regardless of the circumstances, the recovery journey continues and many individuals, families and friends experience the positive change that recov-
ery brings to their lives.
There is the fact that the return to use or a relapse is possible. DSM-V defines it as a return to use despite efforts to stop. We don’t have to look very hard to find stories that reveal this symptom of the disorder. A colleague of mine recently shared a re-frame where she mentioned that the return to use or a relapse can be looked upon as a step in the journey
that brings the individual closer to the truth.
CORE-Illinois is a contributor to the many individuals that are committed to educating people that recovery works. Evidence exists that there are many people who are celebrating long term sobriety. The late Fr. Joseph Martin produced a video where he spoke about the “Symptoms of Sobriety.” In his video, Fr. Martin shared that he was thinking of the production for some time. He mentions talking extensively about the symptoms of the disor-
der and rarely about what sobriety and recovery symptoms look like. CORE-Illinois is enthusiastically challenged with the task of communicating the message that Recovery Works. There are stories we would love to hear and share. If you have a story that you are able to share, please email me at [email protected]. Additionally, we are
interested in Recovery related events and programs.
In closing, I wish to once again thank you for all that you do for recovery. I am hoping that our paths will cross affording me the opportunity to meet you in person. Perhaps at one
of the IAODAPCA conferences.
Sincerely,
Marvin M. Bornschlegl, LCPC, CADC, CCJP
Executive Director CORE-Illinois
