Humane Community Development

Every community is unique; so are their dog and cat management challenges. One thing all communities have in common is that when animals suffer so do people.

IFAW believes that community participation is essential to the development and implementation of a successful project. Our tailored tools and mentoring can help at every step of the way.

Focussing on humane, sustainable solutions we ensure communities are prepared to end the suffering of their animals now and in the future.

Change For Animals Foundation (CFAF) works with partners around the world to deliver campaigns and projects that address some of the most complex and challenging animal welfare issues.

For CFAF, animal welfare is not simply about ending the suffering of animals but working in communities and across societies to change human attitudes and behaviour towards animals that will not only improve the lives of animals but those of people too.

Ending the Cruel Dog Meat TradesThe dog meat trade is arguably the most severe companion animal welfare concern in Asia. Whilst dog meat is consumed in several regions of the world, the availability of dog meat is most widespread here. Millions of dogs are stolen from their owners, taken from the streets or sourced from farms, transported long distances and inhumanely slaughtered. CFAF’s campaigns work to end the inherently cruel farming of, trade in, and slaughtering of dogs destined for human consumption throughout Asia.

Dog and Cat Population ManagementCFAF are undertaking a pioneering dog and cat population management project in Praia de Faro, Portugal. In partnership with Animais de Rua and supported by Dogs Trust, the three-year project will ensure that not only are the animals sterilised and receive all the veterinary treatment they require but that their ongoing welfare needs are provided for in years to come by engaging and working closely with the local community, and providing them the support they need to create a better life for all the animals of the Praia.

Feliway® is a synthetic copy of the F3 fraction of the feline facial pheromone that cats use to mark their territory as safe.

There are over 13 published papers supporting the use of Feliway to:

Help reduce or prevent unwanted stress-related behaviours such as spraying, scratching, and tension between cats

Cats find changes to the environment very stressful and as such can seem a bit ‘off colour’ and even go off their food. Feliway can support cats during times of transition whilst in rescue homes & centres by comforting them and marking the area as safe.

Importantly, it is also helps to provide a comforting and welcoming environment when they are rehomed in a new home – helping them to settle in quicker.

Feliway is available as: Plug-in diffuser: releases the comforting pheromone into the local environment. Covers an areas of 50-70m2 and lasts up to 4 weeks 20 & 60ml spray: can be sprayed directly onto objects or areas that your cat will come into contact with. Provides pheromone support for up to 24hrs.

Page 28: ICAWC 2014 - Delegates and Sponsors Slides for Coffee Breaks

Adaptil® is a synthetic copy of the dog appeasing pheromone that a mother dog releases 2-3 days after giving birth. This pheromone is to comfort and reassure her puppies. This pheromone has also been proven to have the same ‘comforting’ effect on adult dogs.

There are over 16 published papers supporting the use of Adaptil to:

Puppies: helping them settle into their new homes and develop into well behaved adult dogs Adult dogs – helping them cope in situations where they are worried or anxious i.e. kennel stays

Dogs are sociable animals and can find being alone in kennels or rescue centres stressful. Resulting in unwanted behaviour such as barking, pacing and being agitated. Adaptil can support dogs during times of stress by comforting and reassuring them.

Importantly, it is also helps to provide a comforting and welcoming environment when they are rehomed in a new home – helping them to settle in quicker.

Adaptil is available as: Plug-in diffuser: releases the comforting pheromone into the local environment. Covers an areas of 50-70m2 and lasts up to 4 weeks 60ml spray: can be sprayed directly onto objects or areas that your dog will come into contact with. Provides pheromone support for up to 4hrs. Small & Large Collar: releases the comforting pheromone when the collar is in close enough contact to be warmed by the dog’s body heat. Lasts up to 4 weeks.

“Neighborhood Kitty Parks”

A matter of Gratitude… Istanbul, 2008It all started in 2007, in Istanbul

with the launching of the “Cat Condo” during a Sacrifice Holiday.

Doing something good for other animals was a way to ease our pain!

Paws in Turkey (formerly

SED)

Kitty Motel

Page 49: ICAWC 2014 - Delegates and Sponsors Slides for Coffee Breaks

It was a hit with the media and the caretakers.

Istanbul, 2007We offered to mail the instructions to build “Cat Condos” to anyone caring for the street cats.
