The basics

US THEM

Page 3: ICAWC 2011: Ian MacFarlaine and Suze Gomme - Being Proactive in Animal Welfare

What do we believe…?

Every animal has the right to be treated with kindness and respect…

Every animal in pain has the right to proper veterinary care…

Every abandoned animal has the right to a loving, caring home…

No healthy animal should ever be destroyed simply for want of a home…

Page 4: ICAWC 2011: Ian MacFarlaine and Suze Gomme - Being Proactive in Animal Welfare

The RSPCA as a charity will, by all lawful means, prevent cruelty, promote kindness to and alleviate suffering of all animals

Page 5: ICAWC 2011: Ian MacFarlaine and Suze Gomme - Being Proactive in Animal Welfare

• We believe that animals, as living creatures, are entitled to legal protection, moral and ethical consideration and have a value beyond economic measure

Page 6: ICAWC 2011: Ian MacFarlaine and Suze Gomme - Being Proactive in Animal Welfare

• Our vision is ‘to ensure that every cat is given the chance of a life where it will be treated with kindness and understanding of its needs’. We will achieve this through our three key objectives of finding good homes for cats in need, by supporting and encouraging the neutering of cats and by improving people’s understanding of cats and their care.

So…

• None of these charities’ mission statements confine themselves to just providing shelter….

• The word “every” and “all” are found…

To North London

Page 20: ICAWC 2011: Ian MacFarlaine and Suze Gomme - Being Proactive in Animal Welfare

Where we had one of these

Page 21: ICAWC 2011: Ian MacFarlaine and Suze Gomme - Being Proactive in Animal Welfare

And one of these

Page 22: ICAWC 2011: Ian MacFarlaine and Suze Gomme - Being Proactive in Animal Welfare

And not enough of these

Page 23: ICAWC 2011: Ian MacFarlaine and Suze Gomme - Being Proactive in Animal Welfare

To do this to

Page 24: ICAWC 2011: Ian MacFarlaine and Suze Gomme - Being Proactive in Animal Welfare

But we did have a plan and by the end of that year things snowballed

a bit …..

Page 25: ICAWC 2011: Ian MacFarlaine and Suze Gomme - Being Proactive in Animal Welfare

Making the plan work

• Sometimes you have to make the thing happen first, and show that it’s worth the effort, before anyone will believe you!

Page 26: ICAWC 2011: Ian MacFarlaine and Suze Gomme - Being Proactive in Animal Welfare

Why do we need to be proactive?

People are ignorant

By being proactive…

We can help more animals but without making a massive financial commitment in respect of each animal

Page 31: ICAWC 2011: Ian MacFarlaine and Suze Gomme - Being Proactive in Animal Welfare

By being proactive…

We can affect a wider community
