<January 1st ~ July 15th, 2017>

iCAN 2017 “The Preliminaries” – was launched on January 1st of this year as an open-base, first

round series of the 2nd annual iCAN taking place online for all inventors to submit their contest

forms within a 6-month period of time, expressing their ideas through documentations. The long-

term application period was provided to potential applicants in order to provide them with ample

time to fully prepare their invention/innovation applications, relative paper works and supporting

documents, reports, visuals, and references as much as possible to maximize their documented

presentations. As a result, it proved to be a very efficient way for inventors to express their ideas

in versatile ways not only as applicants from various industries, but it also served as a useful

practice generally for inventors living in this digital, data technology era. With 1-month extension

of the application deadline, applicants were able to secure their time to register invention entries

throughout winter and spring. The quality of their idea presentation was a vital factor in iCAN and

more so for the Preliminary Evaluation criteria.

Application Form Submission – was proceeded via email submission having application form

as the mandatory requirement for completion while other additional files as attachments were

accepted in which all applicants enriched to provide extra information and appeal factors for their

entries; written explanations along with references such as visual data, reports, links to video

uploads and other external presentation sources were delivered in many creative ways.

Selection Process – preliminary contestants’ qualification for the Finalists selection was based on

“absolute evaluation” structure. The organizing committee reviewed a total of 377 invention

applications throughout the iCAN Preliminaries period and qualified 250 Finalists (Refer to the

last section of the report for full statistics of the event).

Initial Disqualification – Applications which did not meet the competition requirements or failed

to abide by the competition rules and regulations were withdrawn from the entire roster.

Applications with insufficient data and information as well as inventions of unacceptable

contents/themes; hazardous components and/or negative effects to social, environmental and/or

political wealth were disqualified from the Preliminaries. Applicants who lost contact with the

organizing committee and failed to communicate on time in the course of the Preliminaries to meet

any or all of Finalists’ confirmation/pending requirements were automatically eliminated from the

roster for a holding a long-term incomplete status for their application(s).

The selected Finalists were then divided into final two groups based on their decisions upon

continuing as one of the following contest methods: 1) Long-Distance Finalists; complete their

iCAN run at the end of the Preliminaries, 2) In-Person Finalists; continue their iCAN run

proceeding onto the Final Round Exhibition in Toronto, Canada.

iCAN 2017 “The Finals” | August 26th, 2017 International Invention Innovation Competition in Canada, iCAN

2017 “The Finals” function took place on August 26th for a full

day at North York Memorial Community Hall in uptown Toronto.

Aside from participants from Canada, Finalists from 15 countries

were in attendance during the Finals: the United States, Malaysia,

Egypt, Chile, China, the Philippines, Iran, Iraq, Morocco, Hong

Kong, Qatar, Poland, Kenya, Angola, and Saudi Arabia.

The Finals consisted of 3 major events: the Finalists’ Exhibition and Judging, International

Seminars, and the iCAN 2017 Award Ceremony. The exhibition allowed participants to vastly

share diverse ideas with one another, allowing numerous opportunities for the participants to

expand their own network amongst both local Canadian inventors and international inventors

from overseas. Meanwhile, the Finals evaluation criteria for the Top Award Category

Selections placed its main focus on physical presence of the inventor(s) and invention(s) as

well as the exhibitors’ vocal presentation skills on describing their innovation and key ideas.

Projects were showcased in various forms: actual inventions, prototypes, product samples, PPT

for demonstrations along with invention posters. Furthermore, some long-distance Finalists

who couldn’t travel to Canada also enriched to send their posters prior to the event and their

posters were printed and displayed at the exhibition as well. A total of 121 inventions were

exhibited in two major showrooms: the Burgundy Room and the Gold Room at North York

Memorial Community Hall. Last year numbers: 76 projects exhibited
