    Culture Fest 2013: April 1stApril 11th

    Celebrate internationalization and multiculturalism at Georgia Tech with

    Global Jackets, a student organization that aims to bring together GT

    students from all over the world. Each spring Global Jackets hosts Cul-

    ture Fest, a celebration of the diversity in the Georgia Tech community.

    This year, Culture Fest will take place between 4/1-4/11 and will include a

    number of events sponsored by Global Jackets, Office of International Ed-

    ucation, iHouse, and several GA Tech culture/diversity organizations.

    April 1: International Coffee Hour6pm-7pm @ Tech Rec

    Cultural/Diversity student groups will have an opportunity to demon-

    strate their cultural group rituals for drinking coffee or tea. Sample bev-

    erages from around the world and learn about the cultures represented.

    April 2: International Trivia6pm-8pm @ Tech Rec

    Test your international knowledge while competing for prizes and enjoy-

    ing international themed snacks!

    April 3: International Karaoke7pm-9pm @ Under the Couch

    Back by popular demand! Sing your heart out to your favorite global hits

    or just come to watch!

    April 5: Taste of Latin America6pm-8:30pm @ Student Center Ball-

    room ($5)

    Taste dishes from all over Latin America; a delicious dinner for only $5!

    April 6: Latin American Film Festival8pm-10pm @ Student Center

    Theater

    Volver, an Oscar nominated film starring Penelope Cruz.

    April 8: Food Festival and Language Caf12pm-2pm @ Tech Walkway

    ($5)

    Enjoy an international lunch with over 500 GT students, faculty, and staff

    featuring different dishes prepared by GT students from around the

    globe!

    April 9: Israelfest11am-3pm @ the Campanile

    This outdoor festival includes falafel sandwiches, opportunities to learn

    more about Israel, Israeli music, and a live camel!

    April 11: Rocket7pm-9pm @ iHouse

    This invite-only event is a cross-cultural simulation. Email me-

    ISSS Photo Contest: Show Your GT Pride

    Show us your GT pride as you take pictures in GT gear in andaround Tech, U.S. landmarks, travel photos, etc. for our 1st

    annual ISSS photo contest. Your photos may be chosen to en-

    hance the OIE website, iBuzz newsletter, or other marketing

    for ISSS events.

    Going to a Braves game? We want to see! Stopping at the Var-

    sity for lunch? Take a picture! Traveling to Las Vegas for vaca-

    tion? Show your GT pride on the strip! Photos must include GT

    students and GT gear. This can include clothing, Buzz, GT

    signs, etc.

    H-1B and Permanent Residency Application

    Join ISSS in welcoming immigration attorney Elaine Kimbrell

    as she discusses the H-1B and U.S. Lawful permanent resi-

    dence processes.

    SESSION 1: Guide to Post-Graduation Work (H1B) Au-

    thorization for International Students (starts at 11 am)

    This session will provide information about the routes to post-

    graduation work authorization for international students. The

    session will focus on the H-1B work visa and briefly address

    some other work sponsorship options.

    SESSION 2: Overview of Permanent Residence (green

    cards) for International Faculty, Staff, and Students

    (starts at 12:20 pm)

    This session will provide information about the routes to per-

    manent residence (a green card). It will briefly address fami-

    ly-based immigration but focus on employment-based immigra-

    tion. We will discuss the most common routes to permanent

    residence through employment and how one chooses the most

    appropriate route.

    There is limited seating so please ensure that you arrive

    early enough to find a seat!

    Back by popular demand! ISSS advisors will be

    available to discuss complex issues that students

    face while completing their degree and applying

    for OPT. We will end with a group discussion and

    time for Questions & Answers. If you plan to

    graduate in Spring, Summer or Fall please plan to

    attend.

    Please note that you MUST watch the appropriate

    OPT tutorial (non-thesis or thesis) before attend-

    ing the workshop. We will not review information

    presented in the tutorial, but instead delve into

    deeper issues.

    International Internships/Co-ops

    for InternationalStudents: It can happen!

    Last year, Georgia Tech sent over 200 students to

    32 countries for international internships and co-

    ops and many of them were international stu-

    dents.

    International Internships/Co-ops Overview:

    Can happen any time of the school year (no

    OPT/CPT restrictions)

    Must be related to your major

    May occur in your home country or another

    non U.S. location

    Benefits:

    Maintain full time student status

    Keep student visa status in the US (if outside

    of the U.S. less than 5 months)

    Extending Your

    I-20 or

    DS-2019

    If your I-20 or DS-2019 willexpire at the end of spring or

    summer semester but you will

    not graduate by the expira-

    tion date, you should request

    a program extension as soon

    as possible; the program ex-

    tension request can be found

    in iStart.

    If your I-20 or DS-2019 ex-

    pires and you continue to en-

    roll in classes to complete aprogram of study, you are con-

    sidered out of status.

    Summer 13 Undergraduate Tuition Waiver Deadline

    this Friday

    F-1 undergraduate students who have been enrolled at Tech full-time for at

    least two semesters and are experiencing unexpected financial difficulties are

    eligible to apply for the Undergraduate Out-of-State Tuition Waiver. The tuition

    waiver is designed to offset short-term financial need for the upcoming semester.

    For more detailed information and the application, please log into iStartand

    complete the e-form Undergraduate Out-of-State Tuition Waiver.

    April 15 is the Deadline to File 2012

    Taxes !

    Please keep in mind that all non-US citizens (who are not US green card holders)

    should identify their tax residency status prior to completing any tax forms. To de-

    termine if you are a resident or nonresident alien for tax purposes, log into your

    GLACIER account and access GLACIER Tax Prep(GTP). If you do not have aGLACIER account then email [email protected] to get a GTP access code.

    If GTP determines that you are a nonresident for tax purposes, you will use GLACI-

    ER Tax Prep to complete your federal tax documents. Non-resident students who

    did not work in the U.S. in tax year 2012 will only mail the form 8843 to the IRS.

    Non-resident students who worked in the U.S. in tax year 2012 will have the form

    8843 in addition to a 1040NR or 1040NR-EZ form to mail to the IRS. Workshops

    are offered to help individuals who have been issued a 1040NR or NR-EZ form in

    GTP to complete a Georgia state tax return. Georgia 500 state tax workshops are

    held each week through April 12. Sign up for a Georgia state tax workshop in

    iStart. The full Georgia state tax workshop schedule and more information about

    accessing GLACIER Tax Prep is available at ISSSs Taxes Website.

    state taxes? Dont fearISSS has now published a web tutorial that can help you

    through the process. You can attend a GA 500 State Tax Workshop or view the in-

    formation via the tutorial available on the ISSS Tax website.

    Individuals who use the web tutorial will need to access the GA 500 forms on the

    Georgia Department of Revenue websiteand must have a complete federal tax re-

    turn prepared in GLACIER Tax Prep in order to benefit from viewing the tutorial.
